LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael J. Fox is planning a return to series TV, more than a decade after he left to concentrate on fighting Parkinson's disease.

The actor, who first gained fame in the 1980s sitcom "Family Ties" and later headlined "Spin City," will star in a comedy that's in development at Sony Pictures Television for 2013, according to people with knowledge of the project.

The people, who lacked authority to publicly discuss the matter, spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity. The project has drawn strong interest from the major networks, they said.

The actor's publicist did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Sony declined comment.

Fox, 51, who starred in the hit "Back to the Future" movie franchise, is working with Will Gluck, director of the film "Easy A," and writer Sam Laybourne, whose credits include "Cougar Town" and "Arrested Development," the people said.

The actor, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991, left "Spin City" in 2000 and said he intended to focus on helping find a cure for the disease. He started a foundation, which bears his name, to fund research toward that goal.

Although he reduced his workload because of Parkinson's, Fox has made guest appearances on TV series including "Rescue Me," ''Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "The Good Wife."

In May, Fox told ABC News that a new drug regimen has helped him control the tics that are a result of the disease and allowed him to take on more acting roles.

The new Sony project was first reported by the entertainment website Vulture.

Figure there is some truth to it since neither his publicist or Sony denied the reports.

YES.

I loved Spin City and miss seeing Fox's work.

While I'm glad to hear MJF is returning to a regular acting schedule, I'm more excited by news of the new treatment. Science!

I'm shaking!

Great news!

I would have gone with,

"I'm excited, but I will wait for official news. Rumors are shaky at best."

Great to hear. I'm glad his new drugs are helping him.

Also.. this thread has the potential to be a graveyard. Watch yourselves.

That would be awesome if the premise of the new series was about his parkinson's disease kicking in at random times, making him an hero as his shaking and flailing somehow ends up in him accidentally doing good deeds like stopping purse snatchers or saving babies or whatever-the-fuck hero stuff.

There needs to be better shows on TV.

Medical science is such a wonderful thing. Even though it's not a cure, I'm glad a new drug regime has improve his life enough that he's able to do this (assuming the rumor is true that is).

LOL, I don't get this place some times...make fun of rape or say something misogynistic will get you the ban hammer but then questioning making fun of a horrible disease you get told to lighten up.

However, Michael J Fox has joked about it in a comedy series and it was a topic there. Which makes it more ok to me to have a little joke about it. Also, this is good news, it's not like this is some depressing news.

Pretty much. You always have to be the first one to get that funny joke in. Have to be the popular one you know! *sarcasm*

Good news, we need more people like MJF on TV and less Ashton Kutchers.

I loved Spin City and was sad to see him go like he did, MJF is one of the most likeable faces you'd ever find on TV imo.

Fuck, somehow this made me remember Phill Hartman too :(

I suppose...although I think that just makes it okay for him to make fun of himself because he has it, not others.

I'm gonna drop it.

I recall reading over the last two years that advanced computer modeling of proteins showed promise with understanding how to properly target drugs at the underlying cause of the Parkinson's. And some of the new drugs were just starting trials with test subjects in late 2010.

I wonder if MJF is one of the people benefiting from that - I'm really curious to find out what the new show is, if this is true.

It's kind of like making fun of people of your own race or nationality. No one will really bother you until you step outside that boundary.

I was thinking the other day that in his prime Michael J Fox would have been an amazing Spider-Man.

Wow, actually, yeah, he would have been a great Peter Parker back in the day.

Good to hear he is coming back to TV.

A bit short for Peter Parker (Parker is 5'10, Fox is 5'4), but yeah, he definitely had the look of a peter parker
