Microsoft needs to stop trying to make hardware. Ugh.
I say this as someone who owns and likes a Surface Pro 2.

You guys saying this is strange for MS are missing the big picture.
MS is betting big on cloud computing (IaaS/SaaS) and that requires processors and graphics chips. They are also working on devices in mobile computing such as Lumia, Surface, and HoloLens, plus that new type of phone that can dock and essentially act like a full PC. It makes sense to be able to control major costs in server hardware over the long term and you can safely bet this is just the beginning of Microsoft's developments in mobile hardware.
It may be worth considering Nvidia's biggest revenue drivers have been GPUs (visual computing) and SOCs for mobile computing, plus they are advancing their cloud-powered GRID to deliver games from the cloud, developing superchips for cars (working with Tesla now), and they are using Android for the OS in their SHIELD gaming PCs. They're expanding in a lot of directions and could present a long-term threat to MS on multiple fronts, especially when AMD is not investing as much into research and leaving Nvidia largely unchallenged to corner the market and control costs on key technology in visual computing.

So why would you that then? Why should they stop? They make fantastic hardware outside of the og 360s.Microsoft needs to stop trying to make hardware. Ugh.

You answered your own questionWhy do people think the companies are run by fanboys who don't want to make business with other companies just because?
Currently, there are 150,000 members on NeoGaf. If we all pooled in just over $10,000 we could buy AMD.

Why? It's entirely plausible.

This guy gets it.
It doesnt fit with any reasonable strategy. Apart from being two companies with completly diferent business models, AMD is a sinking ship, MS shareholders don't want a billion dollar hole in their balance sheet.
There is no competetive advantage to be gain by MS. There is no incentive even to make an investment Apple style.

Sort of. He's on the right track. They bought Nokia to get their IP in creating mobile hardware. THAT was the first step. This would be the second.
Also, they're not creating a phone that can dock as a PC. Every Windows 10 phone will run continuum and act as a PC. Its a software feature of Windows 10.
I've always read/heard that they hate each other anyway, despite being lumped together as "Wintel" for years. People used to think they were in bed together but that didn't mean they got along. Dvorak used to mention that a lot.

That would be too much power for one company.

Well, If Microsoft can't make money on Xbox One, they'll just make money off PS4. lol.
Analysts estimate that Microsoft pays around $100 for every Xbox One system-on-chip to AMD. Life-to-date sales of Xbox One are around are around 12.6 million units, which means that Microsoft has already paid AMD around $1.26 billion for Xbox One chips. The acquisition of AMD could save it around a billion per year on Xbox One chips alone. It the company develops appropriate chips for smartphones and tablets, Microsofts savings could be even higher.
Does Sony even make money off PS4?
Microsoft makes more than enough money on the whole.
Isn't this assuming the chips are close to 0 dollars to make? If AMD was raking in that much cash as profit I don't think it would be struggling.

You aren't looking at the big picture.
I think they meant Microsoft sends AMD 100$, which they take a small cut and send the rest to manufacturers.
Intel provides the hardware for MS Azure servers. AMD is lagging way behind, buying the company would be just a start, they'd need to throw billions in R&D and then hope they can catch up. It would be way more reasonable to make a long term deal with Intel.
But they go on to mention that they already paid more than a billion dollars to AMD, and they would be saving "that" billion (if I'm understanding right) every year if they bought it, which doesn't make sense to me the way I understand it.
Kinda surprised that Microsoft or Sony hasn't tried to do this earlier. Seems like a pretty solid decision.

I'm betting AMD gets acquired in the next 6 months. Too many rumors of an acquisition lately for none of it to be true.

This is bad news. AMD need to remain independent and competitive for the sake of the industry.
Being bought by Microsoft would make them even more competitive and would stop them from bleeding money.
The whole dx12 support amd has been pushing instead of mantle makes the rumor even more believable.

Hey, imagine the fast turn around in AMD drivers and the R&D their GPUs would now have!!
