Rumor: New Nintendo Platform at GDC?

:lol

Half of these Wii HD posts come off as wishfull thinking more than anything else.

People apparently think Nintendo needs to get with the program of bleeding money like every other developer in the business.

This is pretty dumb.

He's president of NOA, the most successful (in terms of revenue and numbers) branch of Nintendo at the moment.

Argue all you want that he doesn't "get" you or whatever, but to say he doesn't know what he's doing is false. I'm no fan of his decisions, but I'd probably have run the company in to the ground right now if its sole job were to make me happy.

Wii HD Add-on or nothing.

Cmon, if the only thing they release is a new "Wii HD" sku Nintendo is in for a shitstorm of hate.

New consumers will have upscaled, HD Wii games. Regular owners will have to buy a new Wii if they want the upgrade? That´s just dumb. This is a spit on the face of the wii owner.

Cmon, Nintendo! Give me my impossible-to-build-but-even-so-i-want-it Wii HD Add-on!!!

I'm dumbstruck at how much weight a consoles output resolution has on gamers ability to enjoy games.

holy shit, it is what it is, get over it already. I'm tired of hearing about the Wii HD :lol

Then don't come in a thread about the successor of the Wii.

WiiHD gives us a hot girl who's great in the sack.

Last time i checked, this thread was about a new nintendo console, not the Wii's successor.
You can't whine when people bring up HD when the subject is the possible successor to a Nintendo console. Seriously, I get what you're saying, I don't care if the Wii successor is announced now or only in 5 years, but don't get why you're annoyed or surprised that it is discussed by others in here.

Now if Wii HD was being brought up in a thread about a random Wii game...

Is this really what GAF has come to?

What exactly do people expect a "Wii HD" to be?
We should really make a good classification system for all of these.

1) Wiiv2 - Minor Update - Nothing new for developers. Fixes small issues. Adds more flash.
2) Wii+ - Minor Update - Renders in HD - Games are forwards and backwards compatible to the Wii. The only new thing for developers is the higher rendering resolution.
3) Super Wii - Middle upgrade - Hits a spot between the Wii and the PS360 capability wise. New games are not necessarily backwards compatible.
4) WiiHD - Full upgrade to around the capability level of the PS360. Same memory (or slightly more) and possibly a better GPU. This is what most people seem to mean when they say WiiHD. This is Nintendo stepping up to go head to head for the adolescent male market with Sony and MS.
5) Super WiiHD - Generational jump past the PS360.

This of course ignores any software improvements. Bookmark this post. There will be a quiz later.

What exactly do people expect a "Wii HD" to be? I can't really understand the concept.

The concept is that Nintendo releases a mid-generation upgrade that plays new software the goddamn millions of people who just bought Wiis in 2009 can't play, in glorious AITCH-DEE RESOLUTIONS, and therefore this suddenly makes Nintendo's failure of a system the Wii wildly successful, because as we know any system with high-definition output is a guaranteed success.

Right?

Part of me still thinks a Wii update/refresh DSi type update is coming for 2010, at least in Japan. Not a new console, but some sort of relaunch. The reason is simply that the Wii's lineup in Japan is so sparse and devoid of concrete announcements that a refresh makes some sense.

C'mon, schuelma. Don't fall into the donny trap! :lol

I know that he's the president of NOA, but is NOA anything more than a beefy marketing and localization arm for NCL anymore? Nintendo partnerships with western studios and even internal western development at Nintendo is much diminished from years past. What decisions has he made for the public to see?

How does any one enjoy these sub hd console games then if resolution was such a great deal.

Im all for giving the artists at nintendo more to workwith, but good games are good games.

I know I know, and I fully acknowledge that its far more likely that Nintendo is just incompetent at software planning, but the lineup is soooooo much worse than its ever been that I do think it is a possibility.

it'll either be a Wii with a HDMI port, upscaling and in built motion+. or it'll be a new DS

I hope it's the former. The DSi has barely been out for months and it's still getting in its groove. The decreased support from despicable western shovelware companies like Ubisoft should be seen as a good thing

Wii is again performing strongly, and the exclusives lineup for it is superb. bring out a new SKU with more stuff in a la apple should do wonders. if shit factories like Ubisoft and THQ dont want support it then that's their perogative

I'm not really annoyed. My post probably came off stronger than intended.

I just find it silly when people create this scenario where nintendo HAS to release an HD capable system soon or else *something, something*

I know that these posts are mostly driven by their desire to play the system on higher resolutions, so why not be honest about it?

Because if we are being rational and look at this from a business perspective, theres no apparent reason for nintendo to release a new system this year.

If it's really an HD Wii, then Nintendo's done a truly amazing job at hiding the truth and making believable denials. I'd have expected to have seen some sort of real details last year if that was what they were to be releasing this year.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/news160106nodsredesign

DS Lite release date (JP): March 2006

This kind of secrecy is really nothing new.

Any leaks are of course dealt with using Nintendo's secret ninja army.

The difference is that the DSi ran exactly the same software as the DS. If it were a system that involved new software, the developers would be leaking out little details. We're not hearing them though.

Ninjas man, ninjas.

You're wrong, though. Sure, the DSi runs DS software, but it also runs hybrids and DSi software. There simply was no hurry to release SDKs and development kits to 3rd party studio early - there was enough DS software, and the system was neither announced nor marketed at a next generation device. And it actually worked. They could do something similar with a new Wii, even if it was more than a facelift.

Actually, we had rumors Nintendo was working on a downloadable platform for DS as early as October 2007.

We got the DSi announcement a year later.

My bad. I was responding to a post regarding DS Lite, and was thinking DS Lite, but somehow typing DSi. Weird. I'm very aware that DSiWare has access to more functionality that normal DS software.

There's no doubt that they need to do something to avoid losing momentum and falling YOY Wii sales but WHAT exactly? Could a new peripheral(not just Vitality Sensor) do the trick? If they reveal something that could catch on as much as motion sensing technology then they wouldnt have to reveal a console successor or hybrid system this year.....

Those falling sales are still higher than 360/PS3 and sales have to fall YOY at some point when you are breaking sales records every damn year. Nintendo is in a very good place with the Wii in terms of sales.

They could release their next console with HD and backwards capability this year or next year, but they really don't need to.

While we're at it (and by "it" I mean offbeat rumors from dubious European websites), Sonic will be playable in SMG2, and there will be a Sonic themed galaxy - according to NGamer, that is...

Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games is cobranding. A Sonic level in a mainline Mario platformer speaks of different things altogether. Maybe they'll buy Sega from Sammy. You heard it here first. :lol :lol

Why would Nintendo show off anything at GDC? Isn't it a conference for, you know, game developers? What would be the advantage to revealing something huge there like hardware as opposed to at E3?

EDIT: And who the hell came up with this "Sonic in Galaxy 2" rumor? Does anyone really think that the developers at Nintendo Tokyo took a good hard look at SMG2 and said "You know what this game needs? Sonic the Hedgehog. Get Sega on the phone so we can spend some money to license the fucker"?

DSLite is closer to a new color SKU than a new platform. It's largely an aethestic changes, the hardware is exactly the same. And it is to fix up the DS phat's butt ugly image.

In anycase, some of the stuff here is just really out there.

Reasonably, plausibly, we'll hear the announcement of an announcement at E3 or TGS later in the year. It will probably 1st details of DS2, and GCD would be a perfect place to tell developers that its coming and set up back-room talks on which dev is getting dev kits and take a sampling of developer interest.

But as a I noted earlier, these 'rumors' of platforms, have a tendency to devolve into benign things like a new color, or a new SKU.

Even if there's new hardware talked about, those expecting a full reveal with trailers of new games are just living on a different planet.

To get developers on board, of course. Sure, it only really makes sense if the actual hardware launches very soon afterwards, but if it is a DSi like redesign (and still marketed as a Wii, even though it actually isn't one), it could already be out by E3 this year. The DSi launched a mere month after the announcement if I remember correctly. New hardware just in time for Golden Week in Japan might make sense.

And have Nagoshi leave Amusement Vision? At least they'd have a pretty well known label to publish mature titles they're afraid to (Zangeki no REGINLEIV comes to mind)

But NGamer did state months before I recall that Twilight Princess would get a wii port though, just saying. And NGamer are magazine ran by future publishing as well.

Please give a source for the Twilight Princess thing. If you end up being right... well then we might just have to expect Iwata to announce Sonic in Galaxy 2 at GDC.

But before we start trusting them, we at least have to get a confirmation that this is actually NGamer.

Do you really think not revealing any information or hardware until NEXT May(May 2011) is a smart idea for Nintendo?

We can't ignore just how much they increased R&D spending in the last year too. Been ramping it up

Wii Minii. Same console, smaller size, easier to hide. One million instant sales.

Hiding your Wii isn't healthy. Let it be out in the open, free for all the world to see.

In the magazine itself i think it was like issue 2 or something like that.

I'll check their website and cross reference it with others. They also have been wrong in the same magazine they speculated that the stand was also the power supply though.

I'll have to take your word for it. I purchased the first issue but quit soon after because European magazines cost twice the amount they should in America.

Most people mean 4? I could've sworn Pachter at least meant 2... people saying it should be an add-on also fit into 2, as well

Well phoned a friend it was actually NGC magazine which future ended and reopened as NGamer. They also confirmed Punchout was being made by Next Level Games before that was revealed too the public so I would give them credit where credit is due. And maybe for Sega getting Mario in the Winter Olympics game this was the trade off, its not like Sonic hasn't been included Nintendo games before see SSB: Brawl.
