Half of these Wii HD posts come off as wishfull thinking more than anything else.
People apparently think Nintendo needs to get with the program of bleeding money like every other developer in the business.

You can't whine when people bring up HD when the subject is the possible successor to a Nintendo console. Seriously, I get what you're saying, I don't care if the Wii successor is announced now or only in 5 years, but don't get why you're annoyed or surprised that it is discussed by others in here.MYE said:Last time i checked, this thread was about a new nintendo console, not the Wii's successor.

schuelma said:Part of me still thinks a Wii update/refresh DSi type update is coming for 2010, at least in Japan. Not a new console, but some sort of relaunch. The reason is simply that the Wii's lineup in Japan is so sparse and devoid of concrete announcements that a refresh makes some sense.
I know that he's the president of NOA, but is NOA anything more than a beefy marketing and localization arm for NCL anymore? Nintendo partnerships with western studios and even internal western development at Nintendo is much diminished from years past. What decisions has he made for the public to see?ShockingAlberto said:This is pretty dumb.
He's president of NOA, the most successful (in terms of revenue and numbers) branch of Nintendo at the moment.
Argue all you want that he doesn't "get" you or whatever, but to say he doesn't know what he's doing is false. I'm no fan of his decisions, but I'd probably have run the company in to the ground right now if its sole job were to make me happy.

Now if Wii HD was being brought up in a thread about a random Wii game...

The difference is that the DS Lite ran exactly the same software as the DS. If it were a system that involved new software, the developers would be leaking out little details. We're not hearing them though.evangd007 said:http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/news160106nodsredesign
DS Lite release date (JP): March 2006
This kind of secrecy is really nothing new.
Any leaks are of course dealt with using Nintendo's secret ninja army.

You're wrong, though. Sure, the DSi runs DS software, but it also runs hybrids and DSi software. There simply was no hurry to release SDKs and development kits to 3rd party studio early - there was enough DS software, and the system was neither announced nor marketed at a next generation device. And it actually worked. They could do something similar with a new Wii, even if it was more than a facelift.bmf said:The difference is that the DSi ran exactly the same software as the DS. My bad. I was responding to a post regarding DS Lite, and was thinking DS Lite, but somehow typing DSi. Weird. I'm very aware that DSiWare has access to more functionality that normal DS software.wsippel said:You're wrong, though. Sure, the DSi runs DS software, but it also runs hybrids and DSi software. gamergirly said:There's no doubt that they need to do something to avoid losing momentum and falling YOY Wii sales but WHAT exactly? Could a new peripheral(not just Vitality Sensor) do the trick? If they reveal something that could catch on as much as motion sensing technology then they wouldnt have to reveal a console successor or hybrid system this year.....

Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games is cobranding. A Sonic level in a mainline Mario platformer speaks of different things altogether. Maybe they'll buy Sega from Sammy. You heard it here first. :lol :loltenritsu said:

To get developers on board, of course. Sure, it only really makes sense if the actual hardware launches very soon afterwards, but if it is a DSi like redesign (and still marketed as a Wii, even though it actually isn't one), it could already be out by E3 this year. The DSi launched a mere month after the announcement if I remember correctly. New hardware just in time for Golden Week in Japan might make sense.pirata said:Why would Nintendo show off anything at GDC? Isn't it a conference for, you know, game developers? What would be the advantage to revealing something huge there like hardware as opposed to at E3?

onipex said:Those falling sales are still higher than 360/PS3 and sales have to fall YOY at some point when you are breaking sales records every damn year. Nintendo is in a very good place with the Wii in terms of sales.
They could release their next console with HD and backwards capability this year or next year, but they really don't need to.
Deku said:DSLite is closer to a new color SKU than a new platform. It's largely an aethestic changes, the hardware is exactly the same. And it is to fix up the DS phat's butt ugly image.
In anycase, some of the stuff here is just really out there.
Reasonably, plausibly, we'll hear the announcement of an announcement at E3 or TGS later in the year. It will probably 1st details of DS2, and GCD would be a perfect place to tell developers that its coming and set up back-room talks on which dev is getting dev kits and take a sampling of developer interest.
But as a I noted earlier, these 'rumors' of platforms, have a tendency to devolve into benign things like a new color, or a new SKU.
Even if there's new hardware talked about, those expecting a full reveal with trailers of new games are just living on a different planet.

I'll check their website and cross reference it with others. They also have been wrong in the same magazine they speculated that the stand was also the power supply though.
Most people mean 4? I could've sworn Pachter at least meant 2... people saying it should be an add-on also fit into 2, as wellbmf said:1) Wiiv2 - Minor Update - Nothing new for developers. Fixes small issues. Adds more flash.
2) Wii+ - Minor Update - Renders in HD - Games are forwards and backwards compatible to the Wii. The only new thing for developers is the higher rendering resolution.
3) Super Wii - Middle upgrade - Hits a spot between the Wii and the PS360 capability wise. New games are not necessarily backwards compatible.
4) WiiHD - Full upgrade to around the capability level of the PS360. Same memory (or slightly more) and possibly a better GPU. This is what most people seem to mean when they say WiiHD. This is Nintendo stepping up to go head to head for the adolescent male market with Sony and MS.
5) Super WiiHD - Generational jump past the PS360.
