When Sony unveiled the PlayStation Vita this year, they didn’t go much into the details as to what features the handheld will have when it launches in early 2012. This year at E3, there are things that we’ve heard from various publishers in regards to a possible support of the PS2 Emulator on the Vita.
From the publishers we’ve spoken to, one of them mentioned that they are thinking of putting their PS2 games onto the Vita since majority of their games now are rare and it will be a great way for gamers to play their classic title on the handheld without the hassle of finding the specific PS2 game in stores. A term ‘PS2 Emulator’ was mentioned between our conversation about the Vita but when asked again about it, the publisher representative immediately changed the topic.
If PS2 Games will indeed be coming to the PS Vita, we sure can expect it to be distributed on the PS3, and PS Vita via the PlayStation Store.
Since we don’t have any official confirmation from Sony about this, we consider this as a rumor. We should hear more on what the PS Vita has to offer in the coming months as Sony will be revealing more of its features.

This makes total sense seeing as the HD PS2 collections are coming out [for PS3]. What better way to sell even more HD collections than to sell them on PSN, for a portable platform no less? It won't cannibalize PS3 HD collections sales, it'll just broaden the market.

I'd be on board for this. ZOE2 portable on Vita? Fuck yeah, TAKE MY MONEY!

In a way, HD collections are better than a straight emulator like the one included in BC PS3s. But I'd better have an upscaled DD version of a PS2 game than nothing. There won't be HD remakes/ports/collection of most PS2 games.
I'm pretty sure Square Enix would put up the PS2 FFs to download if an emulator was released.

MORE POWERFUL THAN PS3 CONFIRMED

I wouldn't be surprised if Vita can emulate PS2 games, but PS3 can't. Maybe it is not just power, but about the architecture of the hardware. For example PS3 sometimes has slowdown when emulating minis (which are PSP games), while Vita is confirmed to work with all PSP games and minis.

EDIT:
maybe it isn't a emulator but HD versions of select few PS2 games that are compatible with Vita and PS2.

This is what I have been expecting.
All of these HD versions I have been taking for granted that they will somehow be available for Vita

Meh, it's already getting Zone of the Enders 1&2 + Metal Gear Solid 2&3. I'm satisfied as is.

Has this been 100% confirmed? I've seen/heard people saying this, but I haven't seen anything official.

No, but it falls in line with Kojima's patented Three-Phase Plan™:
Phase One - PSP -> PS3
Phase Two - PS2 -> PS3/Vita
Phase Three - Vita <-> PS3

Which basically implies we'll be getting them on the Vita.

It's confirmed that the sticks click in -- AKA the Vita has R3/L3. Don't ask me for the source, as I had doubts about its inclusion only to have several posters correct me and post sources (which I do not have).

I like those games too but it would still be nice to be able to play the other 10,000 or so PS2 games too.

Sounds like BS though.

Seriously? I had always heard different from hands-on impressions.

I believe that the challenge to emulate PSP is in the CPU, which ARM is better suited than Cell because of the better support for the type of code. But for Ps2, is the very fast embedded memory in the emotion engine, which none of the devices seem to bee equipped to deal with. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
