Rumor: Power Rangers 2017 Movie plot details

At least, that's what the rumor is. Now the latest rumor is that they aren't in the movie at all.

I am very skeptical of their game plan if that's the case.
If Lionsgate is going to release a major big budget theatrical film, based on a property that reached its peak in popularity in the 90's / early 00's, then it doesn't make any sense to not reboot the story in some capacity.
If the goal of this film is to bring new fans to the Power Rangers franchise, or to attract older fans for the sake of nostalgia, then everything about that Collider rumor sounds needlessly complicated.

For those that haven't followed it, Samurai & Megaforce (and their Super seasons) were this weird combination of "We want to target a new generation of kids, but at the same time we want to target the nostalgia of adults that grew up on the show".
Samurai brought Bulk and teamed him up with Skull's son Spike. A move I feel was made late in production as Bulk and Spike very rarely interact with the Samurai Rangers.
Megaforce was way more blatant. The first episode was essentially a remake of the first MMPR episode, right down to ending on a joke with the Pink Ranger saying the helmet might mess up her hair.
They attended high school, their mentor was a giant talking head that rarely gave information (and was supposedly Zordon's pupil, but this is never expanded upon), has an annoying robot sidekick, and they hang out at a

Well I expected a little better for a movie. Not major star but "appeared in Asylum movies" at least.
I thought Lionsgate was footing the bill? Surely they have all that Hunger Games and Twilight money (and even more from the latter if Meyer's claim about Gender-Swapped Twilight is true)

Probably because the color is the iconic part of them. I mean sure we know the names of the characters too, but color is the whole point.

Given the rumors that this isn't a reboot and is part of the current PR continuity, they're probably not revealing names because that would kill a lot of interest from the nostalgia crowd when they find out it's not Jason/Zack/Kimberly/etc.
Seems like it's based on Mighty Morphin.

Well, it all started with the talk that we can't have a Black Zack being the Black Ranger and an Asian Trini being the Yellow ranger. Now they are changing the ethnicity of the characters (Black ranger is Asian, Pink ranger is Indian), so I don't know anymore if the colors still apply.
I honestly don't like the idea that Zack is Asian and not Black anymore.
Anyway, if it's not a reboot, it will fail hard I believe.

Honestly I can see it being a "soft-reboot", like Star Trek '09. Alternate universe/timeline, with a segment in the beginning tying it to the original timeline (Star Trek '09 actually had this, but it was done in a prequel comic instead of the movie itself).

I hope so. The time is ripe for a Power Rangers reboot done well to go on to becoming a successful film franchise.

She's been on a long crusade demonizing the company because of how little she got paid when she worked on the show.
That's what I've heard though. She might have changed her tune.
