Rumor: PSP-4000 has sliding screen, is “complete aesthetic overhaul”

I'm interested. If the design keeps the screen covered when not in use, I think I'd be a lot more comfortable carrying it around without needing an awkward case.

Make it cheaper than the DSi and +1 sales. And whoever compared this with the GBMicro, don't play with my heart.

Retail games aren't dead...yet.

Yeah, it's too soon.
They should start by making all games available simultaneously on the PSN and in stores, not just the first party ones.

Unless they make ALL games available on the PSN, I really doubt the new PSP will lack the UMD drive.

At this point for the PSP1 why not? Are the game sale even worth pressing UMD's for it? Why not go DD for just for the PSP4000, and keep the UMD's coming for the the normal PSP's until the PSP2 drops?

Because Japan exists.

Because they would have to keep 2 versions of the PSP on the market.

no 2nd analog?
no touchscreen?
no internal memory?

Meh. But it would be interesting if they somehow manage to slap a new hypervizor on it, so that pirates will not break it within a month of a release.

It's the PSP-4k, not the PSP2 (again).

Removing UMD would basically mean building the whole software business on the PSN alone. To do so, they first need to release those damn PSN cards everywhere. You have no idea how many people do not buy games online cos they don't have the means to do that. They would totally love to, but they just can't cos they don't have a credit card or whatever. This is such a huge and obvious barrier I'm puzzled as to why Sony appears not to care about it at all.

Bottom line: as for now, PSN only games would totally kill software sales on the PSP.

The slider is obviously a great way of making the psp MUCH smaller. They could even make the screen bigger with the full package being smaller.

Make the thing be a multitouch phone and you have it...

I hope Sony has PS2 emulation in its PSP2 roadmap somewhere. PSX emulation has really made it a terribly useful device for me even after a lot of the support fell off. If they can incorporate PS2 emulation then it won't matter to me how badly Sony continues to fuck up their home console business. :D

It won't, so enjoy continuing to ignore the best part of the gaming market.

how would you know? perhaps there will be exclusive games like on the new ds...
so there is still hope for me to get the best part of the gaming market

i sold my fat psp years ago because it lacked games :( hope that has changed

You jumped out too soon. The PSP has a ton of awesome games.

I'll be interested to see what Sony designers come up with. Last time they showed off the PSP, they got big thumbs up from the geek crowd, only for us to realize in the intervening years that the form factor was less than ideal.

No doubt this will pave the way for the PSP2, serving almost as a 'beta test' of the form factor so to speak.

Adjusted that a little bit.

well, you would think with a complete design change that you would also want to have a wave of psp games come out alongside it and the next few months. More of a "change the look, change the perception" type of move... if this is true

Oh I agree and I'm completely convinced that PSP2 games will be sold at retail on Flash carts.

But I was proposing the Ideal of a DD only PSP1 sold along side the UMD enabled PSP1. I network already exist for it. It seems like a no brainer to have PSP games released day and date on the PSN store along side their retail counterparts.

GBA, GBA SP, GBA SP+, GB Micro.

PSP, PSP2k, PSP3k, PSP4k Seems like 4 is the magical number...

In all seriousness, I really hope that this is actually the PSP2, and the person has no clue what they're talking about. It'd make sense, and I'd be happier that way.

There's usually 6 years between each generation of Playstation (1994-2000-2006).
So I think it'll be the same for the PSP.
2004-2010.

I expect Sony to unveil the PSP2 at E3 2010 and the release date would be December 2010 in Japan.

I think it'll be a little earlier then that world wide release also.

Like this fake one from a while ago?

If Sony can produce a PSP that's no bigger than the screen itself, has a large storage capacity and actually has decent audio (the PSP's playback is quiet as hell). I'll BUY IT.

Sony should focus more on games. The library is solid but lacks a killer app and wide appeal.

when their Handheld system is a pirate king ?

yeah good idea

but they should bailout from PSP already and make a PSP2 as fast as possible , PSP is hot in Japan so a PSP-2 if Piracy proof-ish of some kind can be very good for Sony right now .

Ugh, it will be the fourth PSP iteration, so the third overhaul.

And people thought Nintendo was overdoing it with the GBASP.

Whats the point of a sliding front screen? Doesnt really protect the screen. Make it "slightly smaller"?

Looking at the fake mockup, one option is to do a dual-slider, have the controls on the bottom half and a keyboard on the top half, so depending which way you slide it, it has dual functionality.

If this is the backlit AGS-101, it's not exactly an iteration (let alone an overhaul), what changed, frontlight -> backlight and a small button to switch between normal and bright levels?

As much as I think these overhauls are pointless (I have 2 phat psps and no will to upgrade, and a DS Lite, but since I have a psp I have no reason to get a DSi,) but they're better than the companies making me spend money on new handhelds.

I love my PSP but yeah this.

Like I've said before They could use the same internal hardware just add a second analog, touch screen and form factor similar to that mock-up They'll have a PSP-2 that's relatively cost effective. (maybe more ram for mulit-media functions)

But I don't think they should call it the PSP-2 ether. Take a page out of Apples book. Call it a a Playstation Touch. Then later come out with a Playstation Phone (3G and all that)

Damn I love my PSP, but I don't want to HAVE to buy another one. Dammit Sony, quit with these hardware revisions!

... what's worse, is by the time this is released I'll have the money to purchase one! :lol

People really want a touch screen PSP? I barely use the touch screen on my DS.

If Sony want some of that Iphone/Touch, casual crowd, IMD, money they damn well better put a touch screen on the PSP-2

You don't HAVE to buy anything. Don't whore yourself out for Sony corporate.

man, i don't know why all the hate... this looks awesome to me. as a new psp owner, i'm having tons of fun on my psp and i don't get the hate for the lack of games, maybe just b/c i'm new but i'm in no short supply of quality games. Jeanne D'ark is keeping me occupied most of the time though, so maybe it just hasn't been long enough.

anyhow, add a second analog stick and we're aces. the hardware is already so advanced i just don't understand, other than maybe a touch screen, why there is a need for an all new psp 2 system. besides, you can just pull a DSi... add a touch screen, second analog nub and call it a day. new games can take advantage of the added stuff but old games will still play fine.
