Rumor: Samsung are exploring the game industry

This happens every few years.

Panasonic had the jungle which was the closes someone has come in a long time.

Still love my 3DO , that Horde game.....

If they do i hope they are prepared to loose some serious money on their first couple of years with no guarantee to ever win them back.

I wish they try though.Competition always brings better deals for consumers.

No Samsung, stay away! This is a black hole that sucks only money!

Of course that would only apply if Samsung was to break into the console gaming biz with a system of their own. If they're exploring possibilities for gaming within their TV sets (think social or simple stuff) then I'd say that's a bit more feasible.

Nintendo console

Sony console

Microsoft console

Apple console

Valve console

Ouija board console or whatever the fuck its called

Samsung console

I am gonna need a bigger living room.

You know I don't care who makes games as long as they are fun. If they were to actually make a console I'd consider it at the right price if it had a good controller and some great games.

It is interesting... But I think that we might have enough with 3 companies doing videogame-business. Just saying. Not everyone is rich enough to be able to buy even 2 consoles, let alone four.

It depends on how they manage it, and what is the end result.

If Samsung can get a bunch of the Korean developers to help them out in the console side of things then they can dig out their own niche.

Tons of MMO's in virtually every genre already exist in korea and just needs to be ported. Then on top of that the pro-gaming scene over there.

If done right Samsung can carve a profitable venture.

Can't see it but that doesn't mean it won't happen.
Honestly I don't see them jumping in; more chance of a current publisher entering the hardware market.

They might be exploring shit sure; but actually stepping into it? Nah; am not biting.

I can't help but think how awesome a Samsung console would be but Samsung would face a tough battle convincing 3rd parties to jump on board compared to Sony entering the industry. Sony had the advantage of low development costs and Nintendo shitting on 3rd parties because Nintendo had the arrogance to think that they were the industry.

Not a big Samsung fan. Bad reliability in my experience. At the right price with an extended warranty, maybe. I am quite happy with just Nintendo/Sony.

What is Samsung really good at though that could affect the industry?

Nintendo got into the game and made an impact because they were good at making various amusement devices (influential controllers, fundamental game design, etc).

Sony was able to break in because they knew how to build appliances and physical media formats (popularizing CD-ROM, developer relations, DVD, etc).

Microsoft broke in because of their experience in software services and development platforms (Live, the PC developer invasion of console gaming).

What's Samsung got that nobody else has?

If they can convince the S korean gamers to move away from PCs... They have always tended to corner their domestic market first and i don't know if the SK government can help them again in this regard. Do we know who owns most of their local MMO developers and publishers? I guess Samsung can swallow them up as they do in all other industries.

I feel the console business is nearing its end. There won't be a 9th generation of consoles. If Samsung is dead serious on being a major contender in the gaming industry, they must come up with something original other than being another platform holder.

Android based console. Backwards compatibility to all games that ever get created for the platform. Yearly hardware renewal cycle. Hardcore games ;_;
