wonder if this will feature elements of the long talked about cpu power-sharing that the cell idea enables.

.....what if the ps3 hosting the 'home' yr visting is currently playing a game? ...guess this is what the spu was reserved for?

Given that we're (supposedly) just now getting in-game access to things like friends lists, that's probably pretty doubtful :) At least for now. Certainly with all these reserved resources it could be part of a longer term plan.

But like with the 'remote play' PSP idea, having the OS being capable of 'serving' other people in the background should have limitations..for example, if you're playing online, you might not want people stealing your up-bandwidth.

edit - also, since we're dredging up rumours here and there, it's possibly worth suggesting a link to those PSM rumours some time ago now of PS3 "lifestyle blogs" - basically a homepage for each PSN user where you could blog, share videos, show off achievements etc. It jives to a large degree with these rumours from a functionality perspective, if not a presentation perspective. But I do think it's worth keeping an open mind as to home's form. It could easily be a purely webpage-driven concept as opposed to a 3D environment/space (as much as I'd personally love to see the 'home' metaphor brought to life in 3D).

As far as expectations, the other thing to note about this is that supposedly a game has to implement the "system friends list utility" in order to allow in-game access. It's not clear if it's required of them to do so, but previously released games may not have done so, at least. But going forward, be it required by Sony or not, I'd imagine it would become the standard (if only because people will deride any game that doesn't allow it). Again, that's just part of the innerbits rumours.

I wonder if patchable games like Resistance: Fall of Man would be able to do this? There are some significant enhancements coming down the pike for that game during the next few months. If such OS features are being added within the very near term, then perhaps there's a chance that some existing games could gain access to those features by downloading a patch.

This is interesting, taking from PS3 forums, They were talking about this over 2 1/2 years ago. Check the date of the thread Oct 2004 and at that time it was being called PS3 cyber world.

Throwing an accelerometer in a control doesn't require years of work.

To those thinking that Sony will charge money for what is a trophy room with achievments - they may have made some mistakes, but who in their right mind would want to charge people to earn high scores from their games? Not even EA would go that far :lol

maybe in your world everything takes day to accomplish, but real world doesnt work that way. Isnt Sony's patent on motion sensing earlier than Nintendo's?

It is pretty shortsighted to think that such features are added in mere days, we are not talking about some small company and their niche product, we are talking about Sony. These features were years in making.

As to the paying for PSN, what exactly does Live have more than PSN that they can charge for (once Home comes, PSN will have significantly more functionality)?
