Rumor: Xbox One to Natively Support Oculus Rift

Hmm could be interesting, but then there needs to be a consumer friendly version of the rift availible, I,e under 500 dollars

Isn't the recommended spec for PC asking for a GTX 970? If that's the case no way can the Xbox One do that.

Nope. Palmer Luckey would be selling the whole damn "needs good framerate/resolution" basis of VR's revival down the river if so.

Doesn't XB1 specifically struggle with simultaneously having high resolutions AND framerates due to the framebuffer? How's this gonna work?

I wouldn't be surprised if it had some integration with social features as gaming isn't the only thing VR is useful for. In fact, I could see Facebook using it as a testing ground for future implementation.

Even with little functionality, I think its still good that people who buy a Rift could plug into an Xbox One for some stuff. Added features that effect no one negatively :)

If true, curious how they're planning on making it work. The stuff being made for Morpheus isn't working on a system with a mammoth power difference. Maybe working some of that mythical cloud processing that they talked up at the system reveal?

Or maybe this rumor's being blown out of proportion by another financial investor who watched one E3 conference and misunderstood what Microsoft was showing with the Rift at their show.

Fact: Xbone's GPU is too weak.

Too weak for what? I played VR on a cellphone a few moths back, and it ran incredibly well at 60fps. Xbone has more than enough horsepower to do VR.

It certainly doesn't meet the Oculus' minimum spec for launch titles, but that has nothing to do with Xbone being able to do VR in general, and I assume it's ability to use the headset (perhaps it could do 60fps at 108p upscaled to Oculus res, for example). It could absolutely run Minecraft in VR perfectly fine, for example.

Oculus needs $1500 PC to work optimally but hey, I guess my $350 Xbone will run it just fine...

Make sense right?

I think it could work if there's a special OR version for the Xbox with added hardware. With stock Xbox One hardware it would be incredibly difficult to achieve anything worth mentioning considering it has to render 2 images at 120hz, I believe.

So yeah, probably an error by the developer.

The article is making some leaps in logic, especially with the Windows 10 assumption. Using that logic, my phone can run Oculus Rift games.

Kudos to the author though for getting his clicks-per-month quota in the first week of July.

Given the number of times we asked VRWERX for clarification on each new detail, it sounds like the Xbox One will indeed natively support the Oculus Rift — without streaming through a PC first.

"VRWERKX ignored our ass so Oculus confirmed!"

I wouldn't be surprised if this is true. It would certainly give the Oculus an edge over every other headset, and provide a nice boost to the Xbox platform over Playstation. Minecraft VR would be an absolutely killer app.

I'm not sure how they intend to handle the issue of some games running fine on Oculus PC but not at all on Xbox One.

The piece doesn't really hint that much to this. All that is here is the author going round in circles trying to make it sound like something the dev hasn't said.

They could support it for media stuff, rather than games?

There is a non vr version also being released. This isnt a rumor, its misinterpreting a press release.

What do you mean a non VR version? Something like a Sony HMZ t1? No tracking, just a stationary big display? Won't that be really confusing for people?

Edit: oh a non-VR version of the game. But the later quotes keep mentioning a VR version for XB1?

The Headset's specs isn't why it's recommended requirements is a 970.
Well, it is a part of it, definitely. 2160x1200 at a solid 90fps isn't exactly easy to achieve, but obviously you tailor the content. There would have to be big compromises.

I mean, a smartphone can output 2560x1440 at 60fps in VR, so it's not impossible for the XB1 at all.

Next-generation Xbox announcement incoming next year, to spoil Nintendo's NX reveal / launch and to get people pause before they buy Morpheus.

every day there seems to be a new RUMOR, and it always has no source and is bullshit

but no, the Rift is gonna natively work on the X1

/s

Don't know how exactly that'll work given that the resolution on OR is higher compared to Morpheus and Xbone's hardware is weaker...
