Rumored PS3 firmware 2.7 details (too good to be true?)

... or very very slow. PS3 2.0 and beyond has (HDD-based) virtual memory. The key question is whether it's possible to mix virtual memory apps and games concurrently. It must be a hairy beast.

Just forget about this thread and check back when 2.7 is released.

Where did you get that info ? I'm very curious !

Can it be extended to > 2Gb for other concurrent apps (since the game will only touch 2Gb and may not rely on VM at all) ?

I already PMd Bishoptl a little handful of what IS listed. Granted, I don't know everything and only what is pertinent to us, but it just seems at least one or two of what I said would have been mentioned alongside these if this list was true.

And to be fair, not a SINGLE one of those features listed impacts the developer at all, assuming Sony keeps to their own boundaries.

In game browser? I think that MGO uses that... not actually during the battles but browsing the shop and stuff.
I would love a friend group option like the one MSN has.

EDIT: M3wThr33 where do you work ?

Sounds like a more standardized (and common) use of cross-game invites to me.

I'm 99% sure you can turn it off in the settings.

Anyone else care to confirm? I'm not at home so I can't try but I'm 99.99% (:p) sure that the only notification options you have is to disable all of them completely and that you DO get notifications while watching a video (not DVD or blu-ray mind you).;

Exactly. A true cross-game invite system around all games will NEVER happen on PS3. I don't know why people keep asking, because with the way PS3 is setup, it technically cannot work for every game out there. On 360, the OS already has the cross-game invites, join a friend in a game, and so on already there. All a developer most do is interface with these features already in place with their online setup. PS3 is different because developers are given various online pieces, like various invite methods and so on, or a developer can make their own online setup. Since developers are not technically using a set of standard features in the main PS3 OS, Sony cannot technically add cross-game invites and universally work for everything. The only way it can work is for every developer to patch their games to support it. It's kind of like if Home cannot take you directly into a game without a patch, then neither can a cross-game invite. While some games may already support it and not need a patch, there are many others which do not support it. The only way we may see a true cross-game invite system is with PS4, where Sony can build it right into their main OS right from the beginning.

And because MS has XBL mostly built into the main OS, that's why they can add features like mute people across all games and change various online features in all games (while Sony would not be able to).

While I agree with what you said, I wish Sony would at least at cross-game invite to their first party multiplayer games. It's not like they have THAT many to patch. That way there would be a group of games that PS3 users know to definetly have cross game invites. At this point that is the best Sony can do.

Yeah, I think people were misunderstanding - you can only turn them all the way on or all the way off, not set conditions for it. Hopefully that'll make it in at some point, they're already differentiating between different conditions for automatic system shutdown and it'd only make sense to extend that same flexibility elsewhere as long as it doesn't bloat the system settings.

fuck cross game invites, no point.
People only care about what's not there. After they provide cross-game invites, people will just start whining for something else they don't really need.

PSN doesn't have PlayStation Points for me to buy stuff, no fairs!!! >_<

The only reason MS charge for Live is because Sony's online service is a joke.

If they ever get it point for point identical, Live will be free.

The only reason MS charge for Live is because they need to make money. Live came out before PSN. There was no reference point, except for PC online gaming.

Thanks for the bump :/

Oh and:
- “Theme settings” options while in-game is now available, allowing custom themes to be applied to the In-Game XMB.
- Internet Browser can now be accessed while in-game.

In-Game XMB Theme setting is useless and waste of RAM. Internet browser is too good to be true (as suggested).

I remember when Microsoft started slashing the prices of their HDDs once Sony announced a HDD in every console. Or when MS started including Wi-fi built into all their systems once the Wii and PS3 did. Or when MS kept their 1st party games at $50 despite Sony having their 1st party games at 60. Or when they removed the size limits on the XBL Arcade once Sony announced they had no limit on size files for their games.

Yes indeed, MS has been really great at matching their competitors point-to-point. I can't wait to play me some Live for free!

They may be able to do all these because you're paying them annual fees.

Seriously, if you call "Sony's online service is a joke." but don't want to say why then, please STFU
I said why, just not in detail because it's pointless.
Joke is a relative term, but it's no where near as good as Live.

The subscription model can often subsidize hardware cost because they will be able to get back the money in the future (like how cable operators often subsidize player cost), plus other revenue streams. Depending on how the numbers go, they may become more and more dependent on the subscription fee (if they decrease other revenue streams). Removing the subscription fee is a huge loss. They may not take it lightly.
