RUMOUR: LiveTV on Xbox LIVE

http://www.gamefocus.ca/?nav=new&nid=9225

GameFocus has learned from a trusted source that Microsoft is ready to announce the arrival of a live television broadcasting service to the Xbox 360 platform by 2011.

Xbox 360 users in the U.S and Canada will get something similar to Europe’s Sky TV but it gets even more interesting. Our source told us that the Xbox 360 will be used as a digital television set-top box with PVR capabilities in Canada by an important telecommunication company. While we know the name of the company behind this project in Canada, we haven’t been able to get official confirmation on who will offer the same service in the United States.

A few weeks ago, rumours of a possible Xbox Live TV channel emerged on the web but it seems that this new service will go beyond “just one channel”. We are talking about a complete list of TV channels in high definition. In other words, it’s like putting Netflix, Zune Marketplace and Sky TV all in one place.

We expect to have more details in the upcoming weeks since the US/Canada deal has already been signed.

Could Microsoft reveal the whole thing at this year’s E3? We believe so.

Lock if old.

I'm guessing the Canadian telecom company they're talking about is Rogers.

Dear Microsoft,

United Kingdom does not equal Europe. The rest of the European world would very much like to give you more money for more services.

Did someone hear something?

Nah, probably nothin'

My guess is you'll need to pay more to view it. XBL Platinum script for $100 a year? If so, Pachter was right.

If they do this, they probably will have cable-like prices which would be more than $100 a year. Way more.

Would be nice if it was Bell FIBE without the restricted cap.

Wasn't there someone a while ago predicting another tier of live membership based on them offering tv, etc? Looks like this is the first step towards this.

Someone bring something to Europe like Netflix... dammit!

LoveFilm is already in Europe and offers the exact same features as Netflix (and also has a website design that is a total rip-off of Netflix). Microsoft just has to get deals going.

Sounds like one of the climbing number of features that Australia will never get. What the fuck do we even pay for anymore? We get none of this shit.

Interesting. I bet if there's a US company to do that, it might be AT&T. There were always rumors about that.

I may consider switching to Uverse if I could use my xbox as a set top box instead of having to rent an additional unit. That would be pretty neat.

We need New World Order for that.

We don't get either in Canada, and we're on the same continent!

If Netflix was offered in Canada, I am sure Microsoft would support it as well. Netflix coming to Canada has been rumored for quite a while now.

I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. They'll probably use a modified version of the 360's Sky TV Player.

Oh and :lol @ Sky being for Europe (double :lol comes from the fact that Sky is often shown in pubs via illegal means throughout Europe)

If Live TV is really worth it I might have a reason to at least ditch the cable part of my tv down the road, I'm definitely looking forward to this if true.

Saw this article last week on Gamasutra and almost made a thread about it.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/...In_Early_Talks_About_Xbox_Live_TV_Channel.php

Microsoft is in preliminary talks with former News Corp. president Peter Chernin about a television channel for Xbox Live, which would host reruns and originals shows, according to a report in Bloomberg.

The proposed service would reportedly be exclusive to Xbox Live subscribers, presumably those who have a paid Xbox Live Gold account as opposed to the free Silver plan. The report, which cited anonymous sources, did not specify exact pricing models. The proposal appears to be in very early stages and may never come to fruition.

Bloomberg said that at an April 12 meeting in Redmond, WA, Chernin suggested raising Xbox Live's monthly fee by $1 to $2 to add TV programming aimed at Xbox Live's young male demographic.

i wish rogers would offer service in my area but im stuck with the monopoly cogeco has in my area :(

It is the same bullshit with me, hope it is not Rogers and it is Bell, I think Bell is available everywhere.

I don't think this'll be a "tiered" service but a service you bought with Live. I'm thinking of buying a "1 month TV Pass" off of the marketplace for $10.

^ beaten ...

Wasn't this supposed to come like... 2 years ago or something? I remember seeing part of a Microsoft presentation that showcased some sort of cable service for live.

It was tied to U-verse from AT&T. Instead of using a cable box, the software was on the X360. It looked good and worked well but I don't think it ever got deployed anywhere yet.

Heres an article from January.

It probably requires an ATT Uverse subscription though. Even if the software is free.

They could partner up and help LoveFilm, they could bring TV shows to Zune marketplace, they could stop deleting movies from Zune marketplace in general.

but microsoft already announced the xbox 360 as a set top box like... 2 years ago? canada.... it would support Bell Entertainment Service (which is going to go live supposedly next month)

it's IPTV based on Microsoft Mediaroom

Whatever happened to IP TV? That was supposed to come out on 360 AAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGES ago.
The same thing that happened with the 1 billion consumers and Moore's lucid HD dreams, it vanished.

"Aimed at a young male demographic" eh? Well, shit. Judging by the commercials they air during marathons, I'd guess that neither Law & Order: SVU or House are aimed at the young male demographic.

With mlb.tv on the PS3, cable is hanging on by a thread in my house. Maybe I should sit down and budget if it'd be worth buying new individual episodes of the shows I like off PSN or Xbox Live as opposed to paying for cable and the ton of shit I never, ever watch.

I hate having to keep cable. I use it for maybe 10 hours a month. Netflix has almost allowed me to ditch cable. IPTV will be the nail in the coffin... especially if it is only an extra $24 a year. Hell, I pay $40 a month for it now.

At this rate we will know everything Microsoft is showing at E3 before it even starts.

Like usual.

Netflix+Hulu allowed me to ditch cable, IPTV will be icing on the cake!
