Who plays Kenshin? It looks like Koji Seto (Kamen Rider Kiva)

edit: nevermind, doesn't look so much like him now.. but this actor looks familiar.

double edit: I got him mixed up with the guy from Den-O.

Nice. I liked him in that, will check this out if ever possible.

I just saw this, myself. Overall, I liked the movie. I mean, it's a live action adaption of a classic - there's a really high bar there. All things considering, I felt the actors played their roles well, the story made sense, the atmosphere was fantastic, and Kenshin was portrayed well. It's not perfect, certainly, but it was worth watching and the fight scenes were, for the most part, not over the top and were very enjoyable to watch.

Gets a thumbs up from me too and I hope they make a sequel with a better villain.

Fantastic movie, loved it from start to finish.

Great actors, acting and story with next to no cheesy and cheapo moments. The actor playing Kenshin nailed the role (and look) and the way they portrayed the character overall was great, really liked the emphasis they put on his agility when in combat.

Any other manga/anime movies out there of a similar caliber by any chance?

Oldboy and Himizu.

I actually didn't like how Kenshin was portrayed during the Bakumatsu. He's suppose to be confident and cold when he fights. Introducing Aritomo Yamagata was kinda useless, especially since they turned him into an asshole. Sano's character was completely fucked but his fight at the end was pretty funny. Oh god @ the gatotsu....

Besides that I thought it was an ok movie, good adaptation. I'd give it a 7/10.

watched it on singapore airlines from singapore to hong kong. it has been more than 10 years since i watched the anime- so cant remember most of the characters names or sword stances. movie was ok i guess- tho the soundtrack was very disappointing especially considering how awesone the music from the anime is. horrible main villian too. and the girl's (kaoru¿)monologue at the end of the film was painful to watch (not in a good way)

I guess I'll post my impressions from the Anime thread earlier this month.

Rurouni Kenshin - Live action movie

I had kinda low expectations for this, despite the good reviews. It's hard to convince me that a Japanese action movie is actually good, much less one based on a manga/anime. I guess it was better than I expected. Not a bad movie by any means, and the casting was really good, but it was also kinda cheesy at times (this was pretty much expected), and it was also really long with pretty terrible pacing. They tried to cramp the Jin-e and Kanryu all into one film, with some rearrangement to make it into one complete story.

It kinda worked on paper, but I think it really hurt the film towards the end because it felt like the story was just dragging at some point. The action was a mix of some pretty well shot stuff, and really lame looking Japanese stunt effects, which is pretty much par for course. The music was a bit... too overbearing at times too. It's funny to see such a "realistic" attempt at Kenshin though, and I guess some of it actually worked. For example... Saito was really hot! Lol. Overall I'll say it's a decent film, but not fantastic. Totally would watch a sequel if they do the Kyoto stuff though!

I did not like the movie. They just tried to cram too much into the movie. As a result, the plot and most of the character's suffered. I also don't mind when movies change the plot from the original source material as long as its execution improves on the story or at least equals it. The original story is just much much better and there is no reason why they had to change it. However, I actually liked Kenshin and Kanryu. Their character's had most of the focus so it makes sense.

The action was pretty good
apart from the gatotsu at the end
and so was the cinematography.

What was the point of Saito in this movie? They kind of destroyed his character. He's supposed to kill anyone that stands for evil or that might threaten japan's future, and yet when Kanryu is captured he just arrests him/ hands him over.

So many of the characters had undeveloped backstories. Sanosuke and Saito as an example.

Sanosuke had a lot cut out in the movie for sure, but I see no reason why they needed to develop Saito. His time will clearly come when the story actually centers around him.

Agreed. Seems like fan service. Just put him in for the fuck of it. There is no point to his character being in there.

He gets executed either way for drug trafficking

The movie did well in Japan, and they have expressed interest in turning it into a series of films, so I'm we'll see it some day.

"the movie did well in Japan" is a great way of saying "The movie EXPLODED AND PRINTED MONEY on Japan beating even the Avengers blockbuster hype"

It didn't really do quite that well. Avengers still made more money, along with a bunch of other Japanese movies this year. :P

I watched it and came out of the theatre with a big fat smile on my face.

Like Eva :P

Hoping they did well enough and can work on for a sequel or something.

From start to finish was it a climax? And did Kenshin's strength make people cry?

There are only four or so deleted scenes on the Deluxe set, and I don't remember any of them involving Sanosuke. :/

???????

I wasn't talking about deleted scenes. I was talking about character development being completely removed from the source material. He was totally a butchered character in the movie, but it was clear the script never had any intention to focus on him to begin with.

Hah, talk about no point being there, what about Yahiko.

I've started reading the manga again from the beginning and my memory of it is quite a bit different from how it really is.
