I highly recommend watching at least the first 10 or so minutes of most survival guides on youtube. That's all I did (I didn't want to spoil the starting experience for myself completely). It was enough to get the stone hatchet and how to build a shelter/door. I had to ask how to cook in chat, but once you have those basics down, you can pick up everything yourself pretty quickly.

Was I unjustified? There was really only a couple individuals doing it apparently when I was in there, and they were hamming it up in the global chat.

I have no idea if that was the issue. I spawned three consecutive times, three times killed by the same person, one shot, in the span of no more than a couple minutes.

You have to change your Steam name. There is no way to do it in-game.

Rust uses your Steam name. Changes are reflected when you're disconnected from a server then reconnect.

At one end is someone else's house with a sideways ramp which stops people going back (they fall in a little too far) and on the other end is a doorway with a metal door. Anyone who falls in who isn't me can't get out without C4.

Zombies for most of the world seems to be an instant buy/watch. If Day Z/Rust was a game featuring robots instead, it probably wouldn't have 1/4th the success
It's just a shame Day Z and Rust haven't stepped it up in that department. Zombies really don't do shit from the looks of it, and there's like 5 per 50 mile radius.
I like the sound of it, but I am not sure I understand from the picture how this works. How would someone that is not you end up there in the first place?
I've been seeing some CRAZY supposed raid-proof designs which use unholy amounts of pillars, so appreciate ideas like yours which aren't so resource heavy!

Those sheds you found are probably abandoned. Holding V will broadcast your voice to the nearby environment, yeah. Could be that the people you spoke to dont have a headset or aren't interested in talking to you. If you need help there are usually friendly people in the chat who can give you pointers.
Did you play on the GAF server? Should be plenty people there who can help you out. If you don't have a clue what to do, read the little guide in the OP or google a starter's guide. Once you know the basics it's pretty easy.
Hope you will still give it another chance!

See you around sometime, though the odds are small. I've actually only met three players during my 11 hours so far, but I guess that explains the tension when you actually meet another player.
They aren't. They have been gaming for 25 years and have become leaders in their field. In those 25 years, they apparently failed to maintain a membership here and just read posts.

They aren't as far as I'm aware, my strategy with them has been to taunt them into killing me over and over again while I have nothing. Make them waste some bullets~

Group up with whoever is willing to join your cause, do some scouting, find there place and go blow shit up.
Had a nice run on the GAF server. Thanks to Cell for hooking me up with a hatchet and some food. I was finally able to get a leg up, and get some ore, wood, and meat harvested. Once you get going this game is loads of fun, and I just scratched the surface. Hopefully, I'll be alive when I log back in.

Shazzbot and a bud came across my place. They were trying to get in but it's pretty solid. I stepped out with a gun and they acted nice enough. Now I'll be more weary of them.

I keep a small homestead with a fairly short territory that I patrol for supplies. I rarely leave the territory because I can make almost everything for myself. When folks such as yourself stumble upon my territory I try my best to assist them (I helped you find a rock.)
Think of me as a simple mountain man trying to live through natural law.
