Ryu Ga Gotoku: Ishin demo impressions

Is it worth it? The Yakuza 5 demo was basically 90‰ dialogues.

After you visit the first objective marker -- the little dojo house with the forced fight against the swordsmen students (?) -- the town will start producing enemies that will pick fights with you. So you can spend all the time you want running around town and engaging in fights. Just be sure not to approach the large gate at the north end of town, as that begins a chase mini-game that leads to the conclusion of the demo.

Anyone else playing this PS Vita companion game? It's pretty damn neat so far.

I wish I could try the Vita app (damn Sony for not having an accounts system on the Vita :( )

So far my quick impressions of Ishin are the following:

First off graphically its even better than 5. It looks clearer and sharper with better texturing all round (Yakuza 5 had some terrible textures, most store signs). Oh, and water actually looks like water this time around! Cinematics look fantastic as always and the scenes that use the in game models look better this go around as well. Kiryu especially looks really good and detailed.

Gameplay wise the combat feels a bit more complicated than main line games. I'm still fiddling around with all the different moves and combo's that you can use. The gun especially is pretty fun to use (especially when you use the special ammo). Heat moves seem more varied but I've not managed to pull many off as of yet (I'll have to consult a guide to see which you can use in each stance). The hand to hand combat feels like classic Yakuza, you have your basic combos and grabs and you can pick up weapons from the environments as always.

There aren't many mini games in the demo - you get river fishing - Anyone have any idea how this works? I get to the point where the fish turns red and starts headbutting the lure but I can never catch the damned thing. Just as I got used to Yakuza 5's river fishing they go and change it up again!
And then there is the drunken singing (Kareoke). This bit stars Majima and is probably the highlight of the demo so far, its a blast and might actually beat Majima's singing in Dead Souls.

My big surprise is that there is little to no loading. Shops and resturants are all outside so there are no load times accessing any, and battles have even less load times than in Yakuza 5. You go straight into battles and after the quick ranking screen at the end of the battle you are back on the street.

So the game kind of feels like Kenzan 2.0 at the moment which is certainly no bad thing, I can't wait to get my copies in a couple of the weeks!

damn, thanks for the heads-up OP - was meaning to get back at my JP account to grab 5's demo since my OG PS3 died, now i've got another reason!

The red stripe of the float is going down the surface of the water. That's when you should hit the button. Once you know how it works, it's hard to miss. And also, you can get better fishing poles for hooking up a bit tuna or a shark using your 徳 (toku) points.

I finished five or six dungeon missions but I still don't have a good feeling with the combat system. It's kind of expected because I didn't like the combat in Kenzan. But my impressions could be change when I play the main game with the dualshock.

As for the dungeon game, since I'm not an RPG guy, I hate the cards management and wandering around the dungeons. I hope it's not a big part of the game. But I think it's a well created good side game for those who like such stuff.

I got the vita application and ps3 demo. For those not up to speed, the app allows you to play the second life part, (you can get pretty far in but some things can't be gotten). 5 gambling games that can be played solo or online (difficulty and thus how much you can get is limited). You can do a few dungeon runs. You can forge some weapons and you can level up until 20. Styles go up to level 10. All these limits go away if you link the app to the game.

"Like" meters are back with jails and mine is currently at the 5th level now. I am not sure what it does. Possibly randomly giving you bonuses when you cook. (First one is the cutting board you cut through).

Being an app, a lot of the resources for cooking are on cool down. There is an item to speed things up bit I haven't figures out how to use it. I like the "another life " stuff from Ryu ga gotoku 5 more so far.

Dungeon sometimes has restrictions on which lackeys you can bring. in the locked app there is one with attack cards only and one with defense cards only. Clearing a level rewards you with 1 card (up to rarity R so
far). I spent 5 ryo to get a card and i got a SR card. If you die in the dungeon you keep what you got so far but your cards get damaged. Winning gives them more life.

Downloaded it on the weekend. All I've accomplished so far is selling all the veg from my garden, cooking once (breaking my chopping board), and beating a 10th kyuu Shogi opponent. I won't be picking up the PS4 game til April so hopefully I'll have a bunch of cash at my disposal when I start the game proper.

Haven't tried any dungeon crawling yet but I suspect most of my time will be spent gambling at Shogi.

Yeah I wish I had a vita to try out the companion app, I don't even have a ps4 yet either but planning to and would get the ps4 version.

Want to see how far you could take the cooking and upgraded crafting skills as now food gives boosts.

I've put about 12 hours into the vita app. It is pretty good and has me excited about the PS4 game.

I already maxed my level for the app (20) and I think I have hit the maximum for skill points for the different fighting styles. I also got my trust level with Haruka up pretty high by cooking what I can with what is available in the app and sending her out to sell things to merchants. I upgraded my fishing pole and I am now catching tuna but I can't cook anything with it yet.

I have been using all the loot I have gathered in the dungeons to craft different types of katana. I buy cheap ones from the merchant and then level them up in the different branches. I have given some to my squad mates so they can advance and repeat the leveling process, but others I have kept and been testing out. I have one that adds poison, one that dazes opponents, and one with a rust effect that corrodes enemy armor. Each blade has a different look and effects (glowing, dripping poison, etc.) as well as a different scabbard.

I am really looking forward to Saturday and playing the proper game.

I am glad they have this kind of app because usually focus on the main story in the Ryu Ga Gotoku games and only dab a little into the mini games. Now I can play the mini games while I commute and move forward with the story when I play at home.

So good. Really enjoyed the demo.
Game looks pretty damn good on PS3, frame-rate isn't perfect though.
God how I miss sinking my teeth into a Yakuza game.

Dat avatar. Praying your avatar comes true dude

I still say that they would localize Ishin before 5, just to get on the PS4 momentum in the West. Plus it being a stand alone story they dont have to rely on just fans to purchase the game. From there more sales move towards the main series games due to new fans brought in the fold, which then leads to 5 finally being localized and released.

In a perfect world of course...

Yeah. More realistically, 5 has missed its window and with the PS4 being in desperate need of games (or not, seems to sell out with a weak game library, haha) Isshin actually has a chance, right? Even then, I'm not confident of Isshin getting localized, and very fearful for 5.

Besides we had five chances with the franchise and they continued to sell poorly. (Not with Kenzan/Samurai period but the franchise specifically)

I always thought it was a case that the sales slowly got better with 3 and 4 but it's when they released Dead Souls the sales plummeted (due to being fanservice and not a traditional Yakuza game) ?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming they did gangbusters but more that 3 and 4 justified their localisation costs and Dead Souls didn't.

Finally played the demo, I wish this was coming out in English...I'll wait and see but I might end up importing in a few months for PS4.

Love how you can also use a pistol lol.

My impressions:

loving how kiryu was switching from laazybum ( fake personality ) to badass mothef*cker ( real ) in the story ..it's cliché but i don't mind

Gun & pistol is REALLY unbalanced it's very offensive oriented but all the rest ( defense, dodge, parry, counter ) are limited to the extreme..... an intresting , risk/reward gameplay..still love my normal sword scheme ( works perfectly )

The ink effect at the end of a battle is magnificent

I like that we have a notification that you're starting a sub story and that the sub story icon remain on your map.

I still hate chase sequences WHY ? WHY ?
I don't mind hiding sequences but it's not well done.i hope that there won't be many of those.
Fishing is improved but not that much
Karaoke dancing is as cool as ever.

The ground textures and the draw distance sucks big time on playstation 3 ( I will take this game on PS4 ) and the lihgtning could use some more work too

Overall quite satisfied by the demo but i hope that our playground will be more big because the city feel way too small.

So is a demo coming out next week for PS4?

There's an entry for it on the Japanese PSN, but it doesn't respond when you try to access it right now. I assume it will go live on 2/22 Japan time.

Sorry I was out earlier but:

The retail PS3 and PS4 versions of Ryu Ga Gotoku: Ishin is up on JP PSN, along with the PS4 demo.

When i try to pick the PS4 demo on the store the page doesn't even try to load it

I'm trying the link in the "welcome section"
did anyone manage to get it , i can't find it in the rest of the store even with search

Having problems running the PS4 Demo from PSN store.

I think I've downloaded the correct file, it's about 2.6gb in size but has a padlock icon next to it. When I try to run it says I need a licence.

Could someone be so kind as to let us know exactly how it is downloaded from the Jap PSN store?

Thanks in advance!
