Söldner-X: Himmelsstürmer (PS3 2D-Shoot 'em up) ~first trailer~

Well judging by the video its one of the crappiest and messy shooters I've seen. 20 years on and we still can't design a shmup in the west that gives the impression its been thought out. Why bother designing a level when you can simply fill the screen full of non stop effects and identikit enemy's.

They should have called it Trevor McFur in the Crescent Galaxy 2. Honestly what a load of old crap this is going to be.

It just made me think i need a remake of those on the psn :
- Xenon 2 (but only if reone by magic Malone)
- Einhander (one of the top 3 all time shoot by square)
- X-out : it was made by a certain rainbow arts > factor 5 > Lair flop > they need some quick cash > publish it on psn.
- Raystorm (fantastic one from ps1...)

Einhander and Raystorm, oh yes.

Looked really inmpressive until I saw the trailer. I hope they change the color of either the explosions or the bullets because at the moment they're practically indistinguishable. I can see why one of the previous posters said it looked messy, not in graphics but how the action is laid out.

The graphics though look amazing. Finally we've reached a point to where 2.5d doesn't look like a polygonal mess and has a distictive artstyle like the old days. Looking foward to picking this one up.

any news on when this game is actually going to come out?

It was pegged for Q4 '07, but now Im guessing Q1 '08. Looks cool though. I want a new SHMUP. This and Omega Five for XBLA should quench my thirst for SHMUPs for now.

I hope Konami is still working on Gradius VI. V was a legend.

I like shmups.

I have a PS3.

I want a new shmup for my PS3.............................................................but this game looks like shit.

I hope it turns out to be good.

This game looks like it's going to melt my mind and drink it like a cold lemonade on a hot summer day. Fuckin' a. Demo, now.

The PC version is being released the 2nd or 3rd week of december. According to an e-mail I received this morning the PS3 version has been pushed back to Q2 2008.

No!!!

I was looking forward to playing this when I actually had some time off.

It's still listed as $50 for the PC version at PA, but it does come with the soundtrack as well, so at least they're trying to put together a decent package. Trailer looks pretty hot, and I could always use some more shmup lovin'.

Go home junior...

It looks good in those pictures, not so much in the video. An example of horrible horribleness is the lightning gun, it looks like laffy taffy lightning. The game has a plastic toy look to it that I don't like but who cares? It's about the gameplay right? I can't really tell from those videos if it's fun or not so I'm hoping it'll be good.

Those videos are horrible compressed where as these screenshots look like direct captures... the game will look fine and should definitely take care of you shump needs.

It's also the way things move or animate in the game; for example again, the lightning gun which has a goofy looking stretchy effect to it. The game might look great when I actually see it on my HDTV and it might play great too, so the hope is still alive.

Wow, are some of you easily impressed or what? Have you not played a shmup in the last 10 years? I had high hopes for this game.. I watched the trailer and I thought....

"This is the best looking flash game I've ever seen."

Looks like play asia is attempting to cash in on starving shmup fans. They've seen how those fairly mediocre (with exceptions) Dreamcast releases sell out in a flash and want a piece of the action. Will they succeed though? Unless it plays a lot better than it looks then even die hard shmup fans are going to find this to be a tough pill to swallow at $50 or more.

Hell, Gradius V was only $30 at release and it's one of the best in the genre bar none.

Or, look at the upcoming Omega Five for XBLA. It's a shmup (of the Forgotten Worlds/Trouble Shooter variety) that looks decent and is sure to be only $10-15.

Omega Five does look quite a bit better from an art style perspective than Soldner-X but I will never be able to play it because I most likely won't ever have a 360. Oh well, I was never into giant sprite shmups anyway.

At least let the game get released before you give up on it.. and no, I haven't played a shump in atleast eight or nine years... so yes I want this to be good...

I think it's really a matter of expectations, at least as far as graphics. For me, Omega Five definitely looks like the more polished title, and I'll be getting that Day One also, but I get the feeling there's more experience on the dev team over at Natsume than there is at... whoever is developing Soldner.

Gameplay's a different story of course, and I wouldn't knock either title until I'd played them. I'm just optimistic that Soldner will turn out to be a fun game. Is it worth $50 for the super-deluxe version to find out? Well... that might be pushing it. I just hope that the PSN price will be comparable to O5's.

As for PA taking advantage of the shmup-playing DC crowd, can you really fault them? As long as the game plays well, they can "take advantage" of me all they want.

So you have pretty much no standards for the genre, then, right? Some people might have higher expectations for even pre-release footage. I don't blame them for giving up on it.

I'd be amazed if this is even as good as Last Hope, to be honest. Soldner-X looks like a shooter developed by someone who hasn't played many shooters in the past eight or nine years.

Well 8-9 years ago the one of the best shooters was released..Einhander but there has beeen alot of improvements maybe the people who are making this game lieks it old school.

Based on the latest trailer:

The game needs more single shot stuff. So much spread makes it look easy and unrewarding.

Music is awesome though.

I just ordered my LE PC edition from Play Asia. I'm usually a bullet hell player, but this looks cool enough (and it's indie, and I do so like supporting indie devs) to pick up on a whim.

I'm a lil' pissed off about the resolution support, or total lack thereof:

Code:
1024 x 720
1024 x 768 (Default)
1152 x 720
1280 x 720
1280 x 768
1280 x 800
1280 x 960
1280 x 1024

This game fucking sucks Omega Five is much better. I got the full game and the powerups you get are the most ridiculous I seen in shmup because THERE ARENT ANY!!!. You start off firing puny little bullets that you have no way to upgrade (or if you can it takes a hella long time cause I went through most of the first stage still firing the crappy little gun that made it ridiculously frustrating and shitty). Its like those old shooters like Gradius where you start off with a shitty weapon but in this case you're stuck with that shitty weapon which you cannot upgrade it really is that bad. Oh yeah and how friggin useless is that lightning gun? It looks cool when you use it but it hardly does any damage either! Whoever did the weapons to this needs to be shot most awful power ups (or lack of) I ever seen.
The music is nice however.

Definately not a fan of the art direction. The ship looks like a flacid penis with wings.
I guess at your age, everything looks like a penis. and learn how to spell. two mistakes in two short sentences.

The game has a fairly complex upgrade system. You need to increase your chain to upgrade. Kill stuff till the bar in the bottom right increases past the line, then switch weapons, then repeat. If you do this enough times, you release a powerup. The number of times changes the more you release.

The game, while pretty (despite lack of support for more common, high resolutions) isn't that good IMO.

Some color blending issues w/ some of the bullets (green blobs on stage 1 come to mind). I just didn't find myself having fun while playing it.

It's a pretty different style than what i'm used to, and i havent hit that groove with it yet where i can really excel, but i like it so far. Its def. not perfect though.

I dunno i just didnt get a good feeling when shooting enemies it felt like i was a pea shooting tiny pellets and being overwhelmed by enemies who needed A LOT MORE hits than your average shooter. It just wasnt that satisfying and you dont feel like a badass or powerful with kickass weapons like in other shooters such as Rtype or Einhander (because there arent any weapons in this stupid game, thats like one of the basics that you set out to do ).

They should just make a Einhander 2 in HD. That game had the perfect mix of balance with weapons, cool bosses, fantastic soundtrack, perfect difficulty. Was challenging but not in a stupid 'millions of bullets on screen' kinda way that most shmup developers these days think is a good way to make it more difficult when it really isnt and actually worsens the game. UN Squadron or Space Megaforce aka Super Aleste were fantastic too.

I asked the developer why there is no XBLA release. One of them replied, the main reason being the download limit of 150MB. I think MS should stop the downloading limit BS now.

just goes to show you how most publishers have no backbone when they release for XBLA exclusively and complain about the download limit.

good to know these guys have their priority with the quality of the game and not simply getting sales figures.
