North Korea 'agrees to allow in UN'

NORTH Korea has agreed with United States troubleshooter Bill Richardson to permit the return of United Nations nuclear inspectors as part of a package of measures to ease tensions on the peninsula, CNN reported.

CNN correspondent Wolf Blitzer, who is travelling with Richardson in Pyongyang, said today the North Koreans had agreed to let inspectors from the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency go back to its Yongbyon nuclear facility.

They had also agreed to allow fuel rods for the enrichment of uranium to be shipped to an outside country, and to the creation of a military commission and hotline between the two Koreas and the United States, Mr Blitzer said.

Remember, Korea is China's backyard, not the other way around. So a straight up fight for control over North Korea between US and China would probably lead to a stalemate. With US defending SK but not being able to push due to delays in supplying the area vs how fast China could mobilize it's army and economy to military production.
I'm not sure about those numbers?

China overtakes the U.S. in the number of warships, a British weekly said, quoting a report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies
http://english.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2010/09/01/2010090100483.html

And then there's those stealth subs that China has, that the US can't detect, they decided to pop up and say hi right next to the USS Kittyhawk during wargames in 2008

Doesn't really matter though, numbers are not everything, just look at Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq

Nice call Shawsie64.

This sounds really good for the relations between the two. However, isn't there already a line that the North agreed upon, but never picks up?

Realistically though, if China managed to sink a carrier, it would just be an invitation for an ICBM, what do you think the American public's response to 1000s(?) of sailors being killed would be?

If China sunk a carrier it would be on.. but sinking a ship doesn't = killing everyone on board..

Yeah if a Carrier were to be hit by an Attack the gloves would be off. World would be a different place very quickly. Having served on a CV such an attack would have high casualties but its very unlikely for all hands to be lost unless its some overwhelming attack.

Never see something like the Arizona again likely.

You may have missed the hilariously hyperbolic mention of "World War 3" before in the thread....

My best friend is in Korea so come on.. I sympathize.

True, I was thinking more of the immediate imagery of the event, in the mind of the American public.

Didn't miss it. But still don't think it is funny considering people have already lost lives for no damn reason..

Those were all against non-traditional opponents, and opponents that were/are very hard to find, attack, and even identify. When considering industrialized countries head to head, it is a very different type of war than what the US fought in the 3 conflicts you listed.

Yeah a month ago.... ?

Point is, nothing has occurred to make this a big incident, as of yet.

sounds like a stalling tactic...

Would it not more likely be an agreement that included food/aid? What many speculated the recent bravado has all been about in the first place? I admit to not reading the link, it came up as 404 for me, but I would have thought part of the "package" would include aid.

If you have a friend respect his/her safety by not being a tool.

I understand there is a lot of hyperbole coming out of this but this is pretty close to being really really serious

This is the same thing that happened a few weeks ago. This is the second drill after the first incident. I'm not sure why we're being so sensitive all of a sudden.

If something out of the ordinary occurs, then I'll be right alongside you going OH SHIT.

Twitter has become a more valid news source than CNN. That's kind of sad in itself.

Cnn is a joke and has been going downhill for years I am pretty close to cancelling them altogether
