S.T.A.L.K.E.R does open world so right.

Was thinking of reinstalling and now I remember I bought this through impulse. I think I rather just buy it again on steam than try to figure out what my password and username for impulse was.

It is sad how little is being done with open world. Games like this and even old ultimas felt alive. It wasn't just you walking amongst glorified traffic cones and quest dispensing machines.

Why that got lost is beyond me. The open world games we get today are so mediocre and I don't really understand why.

No, Complete mods change the AI to the point where the game is literally buttcake easy.

Play it vanilla for your first run is always my recommendation. ZRP doesn't exist for CoP to my knowledge, but if you can find a pure bug-fix mod, I'd go with that.

yes, this.

There's no need to do mods on Pripyat.. it's good as is, and it fixed some of the problems with the other games.

Go vanilla on it.. great game.. still a lot of jank, but worth it.

I own all 3, but I've only finished the 1st (skipped Clear Sky completely and Call of Pripyat won't run reliably). Still, this series gets horror right. You gear up and learn how to manage the systems, yet you never shake that sense of dread. You're never that powerful, that safe.

The only other game thats evoked similar feelings in me is Alien Isolation.

I've been looking for a way to play the games with Ukranian VA and English subs. Has anyone tried downloading the Ukranian audio by switching the language in Steam or GOG and then turning on subs?

God damn I love STALKER. Vanilla COP, Complete Mod, Misery. It doesn't matter. I love it all!

There is nothing I want more in the gaming world than a sequel. Failing that, a true spriritual successor will do nicely. The game systems in place are just ripe for exploration and STALKER basically ruins other open world games in terms of immersion. STALKER is top 10 of all time material for me... truly one of the greats.

There's a bit of detail out there about what STALKER 2 would have been, including some fairly recent leaks of the map design + mission design and a version of X Ray 2 engine (!) that sadly seems pretty unworkable. Here's some info: http://www.moddb.com/groups/stalker-100-rads-bar/images/stalker-2-map-leaked

It seems to cop a lot of flack, but I had a really great time with Misery 2.0. Starting off with nothing but a knife, sneaking up on a gang of bandits to gank one and steal his crappy pistol then doing the bolt before his buddies could shut me down. Slowly acquiring gear, always on the back foot. I got myself into some truly suicidal situations but managed to make it through in the end. I'm sure I would have hated it without quick save though! haha.

Anyone who has considered playing these games, do yourself a favour and jump in! Allow yourself a few hours to get used to the games and never look back. STALKER is like nothing else you've ever played.

There's little left to say about this fantastic series that hasn't already been said, so I'll just add that this is one of the finest first-person-shooter series ever made.

One of the best games ever made imo. In this age of bloated open worlds with enormous amounts of unnecessary padding Stalker should stand as a example of how quality >>>>>>>> quantity. Everything in the game felt like it belonged there and had a purpose. The combat was way tighter than the horrible, horrible system in Fallout 3 and the difficulty was perfectly judged to push players to explore increasingly dangerous areas. The Metro games recaptured some of the same atmosphere but lacked the open world and the RPG systems to truly make it stick.

Alright, you guys sold me. Always was curious, but this thread got me off the fence.
Anyways, it's $2.99 via Bundlestars for anyone interested, and it comes with a bunch of other games including Mutant Blobs, and One Finger Death Punch which is fucking awesome.

Getting ready for bed, but will play this tomorrow!

Just be ready for rought first impression. Call of Pripyat especially - it is the best of the three, but the first impression of it is the weakest, because it starts strangely, in ugly location, with not great weapons. But once you get into it, immerse yourself (recommend 60fps and headphones), it is mindblowingly atmopsheric and awesome.

Why is it that Clear Sky seems to be considered inferior to both SoC and CoP? Asking this as someone who hasn't played any of the games.

While I liked CS, I'm guessing the focus on human combat with the factions stuff and the lack of underground levels turned people off.

I'm still hoping for a STALKER 2 since GSC Game World reopened early this year still under the reign of Sergei Grigorovich and they are making Cossacks 3 (which is another fantastic series btw). Maybe we will get a new one, Grigorovich has strongly defended his STALKER copyright over the years. They are still operating in Ukraine which right now has a lot of economical/financial problems, hopefully they are keeping the studio up and running fine.

Yep, it's not a bad game but it being a prequel means you don't get what you have in Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat by nature of the time line. I always recommend to new comers to the series to play SoC and then CoP, CS can come later or never if you want.

The only reason I haven't played these games is the lack of controller support... Shitty excuse I know but by the time I had a PC capable of doing them any justice it was a permanent fixture under my TV in the living room.

Which is one of the things that bothered me when playing MGSV for example, you can turn down the brightness enough that the nights are about as dark as you expect but the game becomes unplayable as the AI is designed with the expectations that the environment is still super bright and you can see everything.

This might not be the place to call you on this, but anyway: I do that to MGSV and the AI went from looking and feeling extremely forgiving to realistic. If you play at default gamma, in the screen you'll be completely visible and yet the AI will stand in front of you wondering "what could be that thing that just moved?". When you turn the gamma down, you start to understand where they're coming from since you can't clearly make out anything that is standing against a dark background at night.

Yea STALKER is one of my favorite games of all time. Are the guys that made it still making games? Survivarium doesn't count because it is an unnecessary ftp shooter

They're making Cossacks 3, they said they might look into STALKER 2 once they're done.

Never heard of this game before, it sounds and looks fantastic. And that's coming from someone who generally dislikes FPS games, sim games and horror games :P

It doesn't really have underground levels but the Red Forest is freaking great and gets pretty damn scary at night.

Yes, yes it does, STALKER is the objectively best game of all time.

Every time one of those threads pop up where the premise is like, Best night protrayal, Best atmosphere, best shooting mechanics, best gunplay, best AI, best w/e, STALKER is fucking constant.

I have tried playing it several times, but the gunplay was offputting to me. It felt like old BF2/Rainbow 6, where a growing circle handled where the bullets ended up.

Also, I thought the invisible enemies were just plain bad. I seem to recall facing some of them in a house not far from the starting point. I wanted mutant dogs and Mad Max gangsters, not invisible vampires and warlocks. :D

Edit: Jesus fucking Christ this will lead to me installing it again. Dammit.

Stalker. Oh god that game. Its so, so, so incredibly sad and a huge failure of the whole game industry (meaning the direction that things are taking) that they didnt make another one.
Luckily, the modding community is super active...after so many years that speaks volumes.

Well many Stalker Devs moved to 4A and made Metro. If anybody could make a spiritual successor for Stalker it would be them

Well 4A Malta are making some space game (probably for Oculus) but the rest of 4A have talked about going more sandbox, so there is a good chance the next Metro will be more open world.

The best thing about STALKER is that instead of having NPCs talk about how dangerous everything is...they just made everything really dangerous. STALKER will always be the best open world game for this reason.

Favourite moment of mine from the original STALKER.

I took a subquest to kill a random NPC. Found him sleeping at a campsite in a ruined abandoned city part of the map in some ruins. Was gonna go for a stealth kill when I heard some squeaking noises.

All of a sudden a mass of rats just descend upon the guy and eat him alive while he's sleeping. I had limited ammo at that point and decided that that was my cue to get the fuck outta there before they turned to me. They ended up finishing him off and I looked for some elevation (they did not jump that hight).

What did you guys think of the realistic weapon patch for the complete mod for SoC ? It's my first time playing

Play it vanilla first.

There's no reason to mod the game to something different when you haven't even tried it to begin with. It looks and plays just fine vanilla.

daaaamnnn!! I just started SoC with the complete mod at master difficulty. Im dying so fast! I will need to save a lot I guess.

Should I install any mods for my first play through of CoP ?
I'm thinking about downloading Misery 2, But just looking for confirmation.

Nah, CoP is great without mods. They all are really, but CoP doesn't need tweaks for stuff like SoC's obnoxious head bob effect or even any bug fix fanpatches. I think there might be a few recommended registry tweaks if you want to get more out of the graphical settings (draw distance or FoV I think?), but just play the game vanilla for a little and decide on that later.

Do a vanilla playthrough first. Mess around with mods after. Definitely don't do Misery 2 for your first playthrough.

Love the Stalker series. It is the 2nd PC game series that I keep going back to the most (first one being the God emperor game itself; Jagged Alliance 2). For call CoP there is a mod coming out called Wormwood. This mod opens up a lot of areas in CoP (it adds buildings, camps, faction bases, new anomalies, artifacts, weapons, etc). Its definitely the one to look out for (and hopefully someone can get the Wormwood mod to work with Misery 2.0 and Smrter and all will be right in the world!).

I played it first time with the realistic weapons mod and had a great time with it. Of course this was before I found out that it was less bullet spongy on Master difficulty.

Naah, it was the complete recycling of areas, lackluster and/or horrible and unfun setpieces along the main quests, some baffling changes (like bloodsucker immortality while invisible), GRENADESGRENADESGRENADES ALL THE GRENADES and bugginess that made Shadow of Chernobyl look like a polished product.

The faction wars are less fun when the game bugs out and suddenly all the troops shooting at you and surrounding your building are immortal

Shadow of Chernobyl is one of the best games I've ever played. Right up there with Half-Life 2 as the best fps. It was so ahead of its time. What a shame that the studio went down in flames.

I agree with you OP. I had some of the most memorable gaming experiences ever playing the first game. Stuff that was not scripted and occurred because of the AI. I really need to go back and finish COP. I'm waiting until I upgrade my ancient pc. Maybe I should replay the first one since that one runs buttery smooth in pretty much any computer.

Y'know I never really did very many side quests at all. Just one ones tangentially related to the main quest. I guess I was in a rush.

On subsequent playthroughs I'm thinking about doing either Freeplay or one of the Lost Origin things.

It is disappointing that so few other developers have tried to emulate this series strong sense of place and distinct atmosphere.

In an age of sameness even the graphics themselves were distinctly 'STALKER' rather than the same old Unreal Engine look.
