S3 now, or wait for the iPhone 5?

I need duplicated clocks, goddamnit!

Let's be honest: it'll be 'patent lawsuits' and 'Foxconn conditions'.

So basically the guy's going to buy a Nokia 3210 from eBay.
Nokia is just as bad with patent lawsuits, maybe even worse since they litigate with FRAND patents.

Ah, shit. Binatone?

ITT: Framing old phones is okay; being able to customize is pointless.
Nah, if that's what you want, that's what you want. Customise away!

What I find pointless is pretending that Apple are singularly evil so your next phone will be some free-trade, bio-degradable, organic (no preservatives) handset.

Two weeks ago I lost my iPhone 4 (which had some risque pictures of the wife FUUUUUU), and up until that point I was holding out for the iPhone 5. I never used an Android phone before and wanted to give it a go, so I bought an S3 and have been using it ever since.

While it is incredibly fast, the "feel" of Android compared to iOS just doesn't seem that great. iOS has an intuitive sense of feedback that just doesn't come across the same way in Android, e.g. navigating the browsers, the flow seems more natural in iOS. This is all hard to explain without actually feeling both OS' side-by-side.

I'm probably going to return S3 and get something cheap until iPhone 5 drops in Q4.

Jellybean will fix that feel problem. Of course it'll be a while before Samsung and the carriers get off their ass and ports it.

If you are really invested in the apple eco then stick with it. If you want change go with the S3 or One X. They are both on top of the phone food chain right now. Once S3 get android 4.1 it will even be better. 4.1 jelly bean ain't no joke. This is the best phone os right now.

Uh oh the Apple faithful are mad. I wonder how long into this thread until mescalineeyes pulls the "I use a Galaxy Nexus so I'm allowed to trash Android" card out.

I don't know why you care what types of businesses I support anyways. Call me misguided in my opinions if you want but I don't want to see Apple "destroy" Android and therefore I won't buy any of their products anymore. What's wrong with that?

Eh, it's more that you specifically stated you wouldn't support a company 'like Apple' next time around. Which you almost certainly will.

Someone could have the opinion that Apple is more evil and obnoxious than the rest. I find no fault in thinking that and basing purchase decisions on it.

Seems like iPhone 5 will be announced in September.

I hope they won't do an iPhone 3GS/4S this time.

The iPhone needs a massive upgrade.

Because you made it public knowledge that you wont support 'a company like Apple' without specifying why, and then when someone said it's difficult not to support a company like Apple you got all flippant about it?

I doubt any other company has a "we must destroy Apple/iPhone at all costs" as a company mission statement.

Every company has 'we must destroy the competition' as a mission statement.

I think a lot of people feel this way because they feel that Apple 'restricts' them within their own ecosystem and is now successfully managing to restrict people in other ecosystems due to the vast number of lawsuits which are constantly making the news. While it's true that the lawsuits are being fired both ways, there hasn't been any lawsuit which has gimped iOS devices in any way (either because Apple is playing the game fairly or because their opponents are offering licensing terms instead of injunctions). To top it off the rate of change in iOS is fairly slow (for a variety of reasons, and I'm not claiming that's bad for everyone) and that, in conjunction with the 'walled garden' ecosystem philosophy, is starting to get a few people to turn against them.

The point isn't that Apple is 'evil' and Google/Samsung/HTC aren't. It's just Apple's actions are affecting the mobile space and consumers as a whole, and many are perceiving it to be in a negative way. It's all obviously subjective and depends highly on the validity of their claims, but that's the impression given to a lot of people, especially those who read tech blogs since this stuff is constantly making the news.

Jellybean on the S3 won't make that much of a difference to a person already using an S3 that came with ICS/Touchwiz. It will indeed increase the overall fluidity of the device and add Google Now etc., but the core experience won't change much, it's still gonna be Touchwiz, just a bit smoother/faster.

Oh man, I wonder why.

I mean it's not like the iPhone grandfathered everything you love about smartphones today single-handedly.

I know, I know, there are some old-ass mp3 players with slide to unlock and a couple of unusable Windows Mobile devices. But look deep inside your heart and you know this to be true.

I said like the OP. Read his reasons.

Of course. I'm talking about the MANNER in which it is specified by Jobs.

Thank god you stopped reading exactly at the part you quoted.

S3 is great, iPhone 5 will be great. Don't let this thread fool you one way or the other.

It really comes down to which OS you are more comfortable with, and which apps you use. Android is able to be highly customized but isn't as stable, iOS is very stable and secure but you can barely change anything.

I'll be getting the iPhone 5 coming from a Droid X, but I like both OS' for different reasons. I do wish Apple would allow some basic customizing though, like keyboard, etc.

I'm very anti-Apple but i'm stuck on my 2 year contract with my S2 so I'll probably get a new phone by the time the S4 is announced.

Go for the iPhone. I currently have a Blackberry and an iPod touch, so I'm already deep rooted in the ecosystem as well. Once the new iPhone is available I'll be dropping both of my current devices in favor of it.

A wise man once remarked how no one takes fanboys seriously because of the shit they write. I wonder what happened to him.

Probably can't read GAF well on his phone, despite ckohler's best efforts.

Lawsuits, whatever, too big an argument.

They're changing to a standardised connector because the EU demands it.

I'm pretty sure everyone will follow on the nano SIM thing before too long.

If you don't want to buy Apple stuff that's fine though, whatever floats your boat. But the OP's reasons are a bit spurious.

Reading these last two pages, it dawns on me where the term 'Apple fanboy' comes from. Be it trolls, be it jokes, be it genuine criticism, it get slammed eitherway in favor of a phone that's not even out yet.

I agree with your statement, both will be great and have good things running for them but I disagree about IOS being very stable since I find it's just as unstable as android for many things.

Motorola/Google got push email disabled on iPhones in Germany:

Fine, you got me. I meant: "there hasn't been any lawsuit against iOS devices which has made the news in a massive way." If you read and understood what I'm saying, I'm not attacking or defending anyone, I'm just saying that people say Apple are evil because their actions are constantly being reported in the news with negative consequences to a large number of consumers in many different countries.

Really? So did you not read the posts where people said they already knew that the iPhone 5 would not be worth buying over an S3 and that iPhones are stupid phones for old people? Or are you just choosing to ignore them?

Is it fine really though? Half a page giving him hell about it. It seems anything but fine.

Asking someone to elaborate on their views is now 'giving them hell'?

I don't care if people don't want to buy phones from Apple. Couldn't give a shit. Once you say you won't support companies like Apple, I want to know who you will support. Seems fairly straightforward to me.

Shut it, fanboy!

(Typed on my Samsung laptop).(Seriously).

This thread is VERY pertinent to me. I'm due for a new phone on August 1 and I'm really tired of my original HTC Evo 4G...

I really do not want to wait until 4th Q to upgrade. So I guess the question is should I go with an S3, or should I go with the iPhone 4S?

OR should I just try to nurse my stupid Evo for a few months longer, tough it out and get a new phone after the new iPhone is announced?

ugh. decisions, decisions...

Please stop picking on the word "like" and just know that it means "Apple". I did not know people would be so literal with its interpretation but I typed up that post on my iPhone on the train to work.

well if it's between those, the Galaxy is defo the more future proof one.

If you can't wait then just get the S3 or OneX; but if you can, wait for the iphone 5 reveal. It's always better to have more information.

I would say don't get the 4S because it's about to become outdated (as an iOS device, I mean). And as several people have pointed out, if you wait for the iPhone 5 then you might as well wait for the phone after that and the phone after that and the phone after that...etc.

Have you actually gone and looked at any? You might fall in love with one after a try out.

I never got how people go on about how stable and smooth iOS is compared to Android. Both have their moments of crapping out. I thought the new iPad would be smoothest product I've ever used but it still has moments where it stutters when going in and out of apps.

For the most part I think Android, the S3 in particular, is at a point where the hardware just powers through any point where the software falls short in terms of optimization and stability. I haven't had an app crash on the S3 yet and I can safely say that 2GB of RAM on this thing is insane in terms of multitasking.

But yeah, wait until they at least show off the next iPhone. I'm not expecting a huge departure from the 4S, but Apple does tend to make people think their devices are magic in some way. They do have pretty much the casual market believing they invented voice search/commands after all.
