Saints Row expansion now a full game

"Hi, I'm the new guy in charge. Let's see...what do we have that sells? ok Saints row, there is a extension coming out soon. Let's make it a full game. I'm so smart !"

One year delay doesn't transform a shitty extension in a good game, especially if we consider their mission DLC who were atrocious. And it seems to keep the "Third" in the title and it was supposed to take place in the same boring city.
I clocked 60 hours in SR3 and I loved it but you would have to pay me to go back to that shitty city, even reskinned with a Matrix parody. And I bet lot of people will say the same.
I thought the mission DLC was fantastic. A bit expensive if you bought it at full price probably (I got it on sale), but the quality of the content was great.

If he really wanted to be smart, he'd position it as a $20 standalone downloadable expansion, then re-release SR3 at retail with a gold box at $60 including all DLC + the expansion.

But he won't. He'll release it as a $40-$60 retail title that will not have a good price proposition, and will sell poorly (500,000 - 700,000).

Not sure why everyone is celebrating this.

It's confusing because Saint's Row 4 hasn't been announced properly in a reveal yet, however, my positive feelings come from the parallel development of Saint's Row 4, and Saint's Row 3 DLC, and how the industry used to function before DLC existed.

Before Today: In Development:
1. Saint's Row 4 Full Game
2. Saint's Row 3 DLC

Today's Announcement (I believe, it is confusing):
Saint's Row 3 DLC narrative and gameplay ideas
+
Saint's Row 4 Full Game
(Fresh content will be added/modifiedinto/incorporated into already in-development SR4)

=
-Saint's Row 4 with even more great content
-Saint's Row 3 package a complete experience now
-The 'idea of DLC' being phased out in exchange for actual "Full Game Release experiences", the way it used to work in the industry.

i thought this was supposed to take place in the same locations as sr3? if so no thanks, i've burnt myself out on steelport. unless volition adds red faction levels of destruction or something i'll probably pass.

Isn't this a pretty risky move? Enter the Dominatrix probably would have made them a bunch of money this year, something the company sorely lacks. What product is now going to help the company staying afloat this year?

Volition is an incredibly talented team, and this will be a 2 year development cycle for them. I see no reason to worry. This also allows them to get out one more full game before the next generation kicks off and they can do a Saint's Row for that.

It actually makes a lot of sense imo. I also just platinum'd SR3 a couple months ago, and am perfectly happy waiting till next year to get another full title.

It would be nice to see a SR: subtitle here followed by a SR4 for next gen.

So this will be pretty much Like inFamous and Prototype now? Character roaming around with 'powers'.

I mean they've moved so far away from what this game started out as that it's hilarious.

Doesn't this move sort of show that Rubin really isn't against Saints Row? ... Anybody?

It'll be interesting to see the state this sequel comes out in--my cynical side wonders if this is going to help get SR4 out the door faster overall (folding in the expansion means they don't need to create as much SR4-specific stuff), letting him pull Volition off the franchise sooner so they can work on the types of games he thinks they should be making. So will we get a full SR4+ the Dominatrix stuff? Or will we get a buffed-up Dominatrix including parts of what would have been SR4? Will be interesting to see.

I'm not mad at the delay to expand the game. It was probably the best way to get more money out of it and now we'll get a full-fledged game that will hopefully address and correct some problems that were in The Third. So good. I can imagine what super powers they are going to cook up. lol.

It also shows Crecente is a jackass with extremely poor writing skills.

I'm still not 100% sure that Rubin wasn't doing some pretty extreme back peddling after that article though.

They've been working on Saints Row nonstop, literally, since Saints Row 1. When Saints Row 1 was almost finished, or around that time, they started working on Saints Row 2, or atleast announced Saints Row 2, then when that was almost finished, they announced Saints Row 3, then Saints Row 4.

I'm not sure how normal that cycle is in the game development business, but it doesn't sound good for any line of work that requires creative output/inspired workers. It's as if they are just churning out Saints Row after Saints Row cause of how much money the previous games made.

That type of development cycle can't maintain a good/decent FPS game after 3-4 iterations, so I have some doubts as to whether or not the people behind Saints Row can churn out another good+ open world game (Which requires far, far more content than an FPS game.) especially considering Saints Row 3 was already lacking in many areas (Especially content wise.).

I just started my second play through of SR3 last night. It's such a great game! The Taunt 50 gang members challenge fucking sucks tough.

I think it's pretty normal for a developer that focuses on one franchise. It's a creative endeavor, but it's also a day job. These people need to go to work every day and earn their paychecks just like anyone else. Once the front end designers have done their thing and have nothing more to do on the current project, they start preliminary work on the next one while the programmers still have months or even years of work left to do getting the game out the door.

These thoughts keep me warm at night when I speculate that Rockstar has probably been working on GTA V in some capacity for at least four years, maybe 5. Then I fap.

Funny, something made me start a new game of SR2 last night. I guess my 'SR news sense' was tingling.

Yeah probably, but still, I hope they are atleast shuffling the development teams on the various Saints Row games (For the sake of the developers and overall creativity/development atmosphere.).

I also thought about GTA V while writing my previous post -- I was wondering how long Rockstar have been working on GTA V (That is, actual content creation, as opposed to a couple of guys sketching out the very basics of the plot/story and such.)

Oh. I was really excited when this was going to be an expansion pack. I've missed those. And it would have been fun to see how it would have stacked up compared to The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. I know I'll be able to stomach another current gen full-fledged Saints Row game, but it's still disappointing regardless.

Its easy, taunt someone then run into a store. Go back out and taunt someone else, repeat. (can't taunt the same person more than once though)

Really doesn't take that long.

Find a gang operation near a shop, run over and taunt as many as possible then run into a shop, if it is far enough away they should respawn and you can do it again, takes no time at all.

Just for clarification, the thread title is a bit misleading. As seen in the release the expansion is not "now a full game" it's being rolled into a full game.

It's being rolled into a new rushed game. It was over 3 years between SR2 and SR3. Now we're getting SR4 in two years (maybe less), with shoehorned-in DLC from a previous game because THQ is struggling to keep the lights on, and Saints Row is their only consistent money maker. This is not a good thing.

Wait...SR2 was serious? Yeah the missions where you spray poop all over the city were pretty deep.

Along with the mission where you steal nuclear waste and combine it with tattoo ink to disfigure a rival gang leader, or how the game begins with you butchering an entire courthouse, or the crazy voodoo powers. Though I think we should keep in mind that his favourite character if Johnny Gat, the most serious and believable character in video game history.

If the game comes out as Saint's Row 3 with more content I'll be happy.

Scenes like the cemetary, or when your friend (forgot his name)
was dragged around the neighborhood via truck
, or the monster truck show
where you put Jess in the trunk of the car
was pretty heavy.

You got me on the poop mission, but still I'd say SR2 had darker tones to it.

Cute.

"Expansion folded into a full game" is a recipe for disaster. THQ needs money and after Saints Row The Third success they want to capitalize on that. Unfortunately I don't see this decision as a good one for the quality of the game or the future of this franchise.

Vice City was an expansion wasn't it? That's how the news about it was describing it before it launched.

Since it's going to be a brand new game I'm hoping for cover mechanics like what RE6 is doing and GoW3. Also any DLC from SR3 is easily translated over to this SR game for those who bought it.
