Sakurai Confirms Ice Climbers Died for 3DS Sins

PSA - Don't blame the Nintendo 3DS. Blame Sakurai and his illogical, arbitrary decision to create the same roster for two games that have wildly different possibilities based on their respective hardware.

Sucks for those who were sick with Ice Climbers (there are many of you). I could never do their bizarre control scheme justice on a competitive level, even after 10+ years of Melee.

It's a loss, but at least Sakurai is being transparent about it.

Olimar's Pikmin reduction and the fact that Miiverse and the Internet Browser are disabled while playing Smash 3DS made it pretty obvious Ice Climbers were cut due to system restrictions

I wouldn't use the world "wildly" for one character. I'm pretty sure they accomplished everything they wanted to on the 3DS except for the Ice Climbers.

I'm becoming more and more certain we won't have any DLC. I was sure they could hve gotten then to work with more dev time.

Ugh. I'm so sad :(

That's fine and all, but I sort of feel like this is non-nonsensical given that there are already different game modes and stages. They're already not the same game.

People don't really buy fighting games for specific stages or specific alternate game modes however. They will buy a game for specific characters, and to put exclusive characters in the different versions would probably cause more controversy than the loss of a single character due to the constraints of one of the systems.

They couldn't have just reduced their model complexity by half? Rosalina & Luma work. Olimar & 3 Pikmin work.

No Iceys in the Wii U version would be INSANE. Fuck parity, holding back one version is ridiculous.
"I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where..."

Thank you 3DS for costing us one of the more unique characters in the series. All because of Sakurai's overly fond attitude towards handhelds.

Let's have them WiiU exclusive then rather than lose them completely.... Nope can't have those WiiU users get a character the 3DS ones don't get. It's not like SSB was a console series before this or anything. Let's just take away an entire character from one set of users due to the shortcomings of another version, seems completely rational and fair.

Yeah, I've gone from just not being interested in the 3DS version to outright despising it. It's holding the Wii U version back.

I'll be even more disappointed if the stage selection in the Wii U version is as disappointing as it is on 3DS. The resources they spent essentially making two different games could have been better spent making one even better game.

And Luma/Pikmin don't have the same AI requirements as Nana. Playing with 4x Ice Climbers requires the game to support at least 4 Nana AIs plus the Popos, which can be AI or player controlled.

There will be, count on it. If not already decided upon by Sakurai, Nintendo will mandate it. No way Nintendo will pass up the license to print money.

It's not about model complexity, it's about Nana's AI. Having Ice Climbers in a 4 player match means 4 human players and 1 full CPU player AI. Having 4 ICs means 4 humans and 4 CPUs.

Having 4 CPU Ice Climbers means 8 CPU players in one match.

You can see why the 3DS would have trouble with this, I think.

Luma's AI basically doesn't exist, and the Pikmin have no AI either. Ice Climbers are full CPU-controlled characters.

It still sucks, though. I'm sure they'll return for Smash 5, considering why they were cut.

Um.... what? LOL

That is the dumbest reason ever.

Sakurai does what Sakurai wants.

Fans want Ridley. Sakurai doesn't. No Ridley.

KI:U has a ton of weapons with one being "owned" by Dark Pit. Dark Pit is a clone with the same weapons as Pit and he only uses his own weapon in his final smash.

This man does not care about what his fans want. I refuse to believe Jigglypuff is more popular than Mewtwo.

Hell, three games after they debuted, Falco and Ganondorf are STILL clones.

I'm sure there will be DLC.

Just not on the level hardcore fans are expecting...

I just wanted a character or two with a few new stages. Now I'm thinking we might get, like, a reject trophy pack or something.

I would have loved a veteran fighter pack and a newcomer pack. Why can't my dreams come true.

I'm not using the word "wildly" for one character. I'm saying that the potential for each game is vastly different based on the power differential between the consoles. It's foolish to try and create the same experience on two platforms when one platform offers you the potential to do so much more.

let's see, 60 FPS, 3D, at most 8 independently-acting characters onscreen, and understanding what we do about the 3DS already... doesn't sound so dumb.

Are you serious? If the game can run at 60 FPS then surely the Ice Climbers can be put in to the game without it dipping down past 50-55?

People will seriously believe anything Sakurai says as if he's some worshiped god.. Oh wait a second..

I didn't think of it that way.

That's an annoyingly valid reason.

I don't know. Personally, I just don't see it. If they were literally supposed to be the same game and include features like cross-platform play (i.e. I could play online on my 3DS against someone using the Wii U version), this would make sense to me. Otherwise, it strikes me as rather silly.

By virtue of the platforms released, the MSRP for the Wii U version will be $20 higher. For that premium, you get better visuals obviously. It also makes sense to me to include more characters. Like many people, I'm buying both versions. I don't see how Ice Climbers in Wii U diminishes the value of the 3DS version.

But then all they'd have to do is artificially delay this one for a month. There's literally nothing to cause it to make BOTH wait.

What do you mean artificially delay this one for a month? Iinm the current situation is all those who are in debug team are focusing on 3DS first then Wii U. If they want to release it at the same time, splitting the debug team into 2 doesn't always mean the total workload ends up the same in the long run. Besides, Sakurai himself is doing debugging/playtest so if he's switching focus too many times on both version, it wouldn't be as fast as right now.

Even so, exclusive characters have happened throughout the history of the genre, and it's still happening even in games that are released in the current era.

Therefore, it wouldn't be completely unprecedented if the portable version was made into the designated "mini-version", while the console version was acknowledged as the "main one". Hell, that's the usual parlance for fighting game ports.

I don't want a Smash Bros. where the framerate drops below 60. That sounds fucking awful.

A bit of a shame, silly as it was, there was something mind-blowing about seeing 8 of these suckers (4 players, all ice climbers) on screen at once. I didn't even like playing as 'em that much but I found it pretty cool.

For all we know it's a marketing thing (amiibos anyone?) not necessarily Sakurai's call.

It's not just ONE Ice climber, anyone that can be played as one player could potentially be played in all slots. Not that a single character introducing framedrops is acceptable in any way, either.

At the very least they should have returned as a single character (4 costumes for Popo and 4 for Nana). Not optimal, but better than letting them out of the roster.

I wouldn't have minded if they sacrificed 3D, hell the 3DS version completely if it meant the Ice Climbers could have made it in.
