Sakurai Confirms Ice Climbers Died for 3DS Sins

If Ice Climbers is the price I have to pay for having Smash on my 3DS then to be frank it's something I'm begrudgingly willing to pay.

... But I really do hope Sakurai either reconsiders roster parity or that there's at least a few more DLC characters in store.

Same reason 3DS has to suffer from Wii U being unable to handle Squirtle and Ivysaur as HD transformations, probably..
This is the most confusing thing I've read today.

Smash doesn't belong on the 3DS. It's gross that Nintendo put it on there at all and now it's holding back the real version of the game.

I love the Ice Climbers, but I am okay with trading them for handheld Smash. I wouldn't have been opposed to ICs being Wii U exclusive (as long as there was an exclusive for the 3DS too).

Given that they had to lock off Miiverse and the Browser in order to get the thing running properly, this is disappointing but hardly surprising. I loved playing as the Ice Climbers and knowing they were running properly in the Wi U version is painful. Maybe they'll be back in the future.

This is where we fundamentally disagree. Neither of us will budge, nor need we. We can just nod and move on.

Would you rather have good hardware with a terrible library or bad hardware with a good library? The ideal answer is both, but 99% of the time that never happens. I just don't understand why someone would think specs are more important than the games.

Anyone think Sakurai could change his mind on the roaster parity thing? I remember he said something on the Nintendo direct a few months back, but was there anything new? Also was there anything he said that he went back on?

Pretty sad. I guess we have full-on confirmation that the 3DS version gimped the Wii U version now, huh? I can't help but wish they had just done one giant version on the Wii U rather than hold it back because of the 3DS development... hopefully the Wii U version has enough content of its own so that it feels like its own full game rather than half a Smash like the 3DS version somewhat does.

More than anything I'm a little bummed since this almost certainly means that IC won't come back as DLC. Rest in peace, you wonderful climbers. Rest in peace...
Please let at least Lucas come back please please please
The Gematsu leak called the removal of Lucas, & his moves were given to Ness via his Custom Moves. He's probably gone for good. :-(

Why would you want another exclusive character for another console? I'm sure the 3DS's feelings won't be hurt if the Wii U version gets another character.

Nobody is going to take yur comment seriously when you said earlier in the thread that you didnt care for the ice climbers being cut in the first place, this doesnt put your opinion above everyone elses

Oh no my comment's seriousness!!!

The point of my first post is "wow who cares." It's just the Ice Climbers. Sure, there are a few people that played the heck out of them, I'll venture that, but there is no way enough people gave two shits about them to back the kind of outrage their exclusion has garnered. It's being blown wildly out of proportion by people with zero stake in the situation, it's ridiculous.

I care that when I buy the Wii U game, the character roster won't be catered towards the Wii U's extra power because Sakurai mandates forced roster parity "so 3DS-only owners won't feel cheated."

What's the point of new graphical models if the characters are going to be limited design-wise as well?

You are extrapolating wildly. There's no reason to think there are other characters that found themselves limited out of the game because of this. We've still got a JAM PACKED roster full of a million cool characters, it's not like SSB as a series has been all about dual-character playstyles. There was one in Melee, and the same one in Brawl. In exchange for the Ice Climbers we've got Rosalina. Fair trade.

I am completely fine with a few characters getting cut if these were the concessions that had to be made for a portable version of the game. It is really nice to have Smash Bros. on my 3DS and play it when I'm out.

For people complaining about the existance of the 3DS game think about position Nintendo is in.

The WiiU has sold like absolute crap, whereas there are tens of millions of 3DSes out there and lots more to be purchased. It makes total and complete business sense for them to make a 3DS version along with a WiiU version. Even at the cost of the 3DS causing certain aspects or characters being changed or removed.

Not too surprised to hear this. I mean, all you have to do is look at the assist trophies and Olimar. Not to mention how the models don't seem like that big a jump from Brawl in order to make sure they can be scaled down to the 3DS.

Wish they'd sacrifice 3D instead. Pokemon already did that, and I think a few other games as well.

I love the Ice Climbers, but I am okay with trading them for handheld Smash. I wouldn't have been opposed to ICs being Wii U exclusive (as long as there was an exclusive for the 3DS too).

Why would the 3DS version need an exclusive character? You're already getting the game cheaper than Wii U owners.

Good news to make out of this is that we now know that adding them as Wii U exclusive DLC later on shouldn't be difficult.

It's just a matter of convincing Sakurai that its okay to have a different roster and get Nintendo to stop playing dumb and actually announce Smash DLC.

3DS limitations are the reason those wobbling abominations are no longer in the game? *hugs 3DS*

Chaingrabbing is a thing of the past anyway, so that strategy wouldn't have worked anymore.

I guess Falco can kinda chain grab->nair->grab but I'm not sure how repeatable it is.

This is the most confusing thing I've read today.
The game has to load transforming characters in the memory so you can swap them in at any time during the fights. But the HD versions of the characters are too much for the Wii U to handle, hence transforming characters getting split.

And of the Pokemon Trainer's three Pokemon, only Charizard came back. If it weren't for Wii U we'd probably still have the cool starters that aren't protected by The Pokemon Company's bias.

making two versions was such a dumb idea. unless the Wii U version is absolutely packed with content both versions of the game are going to feel half finished relative to brawl (at least the gameplay's better I guess).

Sakurai does what Sakurai wants.

Fans want Ridley. Sakurai doesn't. No Ridley.

KI:U has a ton of weapons with one being "owned" by Dark Pit. Dark Pit is a clone with the same weapons as Pit and he only uses his own weapon in his final smash.

This man does not care about what his fans want. I refuse to believe Jigglypuff is more popular than Mewtwo.

Hell, three games after they debuted, Falco and Ganondorf are STILL clones.

Yes, as it turns out the fans never asked for Megaman, Little Mac or Shulk,.

3DS users didn't cause this, Sakurai's closed minded thinking did. There is zero legitimate reasons the Wii U version couldn't have its own roster.

and here is the proof Smash Bros. isn't a real fighting game: people don't get laughed off the stage for saying things like this

You do realize the PS2, widely considered to have one of the best libraries of all time, was the weakest hardware on the market at the time and often held back multi platform games, right?
I do realise that, yes.

Would you rather have good hardware with a terrible library or bad hardware with a good library? The ideal answer is both, but 99% of the time that never happens. I just don't understand why someone would think specs are more important than the games.
False dichotomy. I don't think there are any mainstream systems on the market with a genuinely terrible library. All systems have more good games than I have time to play good games so why settle for hardware that actively ruins my experience? Not to mention the fact that weaker systems gimp games, as evidenced by this thread.

(I'm off to bed, if for any reason you want to continue, drop me a PM).

Not only that, Japan would be pissed if they didn't get to play SSB4 at all :P

They'll probably come back next time, given the circumstances of their removal. Sadly this rules them out for DLC.

The Wii U was not selling like crap when the 3DS version was announced. It wasn't even out yet.

It makes sense that they wanted the same characters on both systems. If the Wii U version had more characters, it would look like the superior version and thus discourage people from buying the 3DS version.

It's not like we haven't lost fighters in other games along the way. They were cut, but I do hope they make it in for the next Smash Bros.

Lol what. If anything transformation characters were removed because of the 3DS version, not the Wii U version.

But...but...extra RAM...

Also Gamecube confirmed more powerful than 3DS.

But all joking aside, it's weird that they won't just make them a Wii U-exclusive character. Did they think that people would be mad that there are version-exclusive characters but not version-exclusive stages? I mean, they have an excuse not to share characters because the 3DS literally couldn't handle them. If the games had cross-play then I would understand, but even then they could just disable the characters that aren't shared just like they would also disable the stages that aren't shared.

How in the blue hell did you come to the conclusion that nobody cared for them? ice climbers was in 2 smash games both with 10 million+ sales, and of that that 20 million sales your saying a extremely few of those didnt care for the chaeacters? Nevermind that they're considered top tier in the games

Well they could get rid of the CPU AI altogether or simplify it. Chaingrabbing being gone from the game means there isn't as much of an incentive to desync and there really isn't a big reason to keep up the CPU AI unless Nana is trying to recover.

Rather than only Popo, I think the next best solution is having them act as an always on Sougenmu.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about here are links to Sougenmu.
http://megaman.wikia.com/wiki/Twin_Dream
Sougenmu in Fighting Games

Like Zero from the Vs. Capcom series and Mega Man X5, Nana would basically act as a shadow clone and work like Sougenmu by mirroring Popo's inputs with a .1 second delay in between.

You would keep the two character idea and implement a new fighting style which encourages Ice Climber mains to rack up and kill their opponent fast. A Sougenmu-like play style would allow Ice Climbers to quickly rack up damage and kill opponents at the expense of halving damage and knock back output when Nana dies.

It's sorta like Rosalina and Luma but Nana doesn't respawn till the stock ends.

It's a nice compromise seeing that the main reason for desyncing in the game is gone and the fact that it gives you a secondary option while keeping the dual character-style play relevant.

A permanent Sougenmu/Shadow Clone is basically Ice Climbers without chain grab desyncs and AI, but with better Kill Potential.

Just out of curiosity, of those of you who are bothered by this, is it more a principle thing, or more that you mained/often played as the Ice Climbers?

It's the principle.

The WiiU version as far as i'm concerned is being kneecapped because of the 3DS and in some ways isn't getting a fair run.

Home console series, i wonder if i can make it exclusive to the other system that pretty much nearly takes away the biggest draw of the series easy local multiplayer so i can evolve the series.... genius.

Character can't run on the 3DS, lets take them away from the WiiU version.

Character isn't running properly on the 3DS, let's completely revamp them to make sure the 3DS can run it (Admittedly some of these have been good, namely Shiek and ZSS).

Brand new mode akin to City Trials, lets stick it exclusively on the system where some of us who either aren't blessed to live in Japan the land of handhelds or have close handheld players near us almost have to have the equivalent of planetary alignment (Clear hyperbole but you get it) to use it with humans. Luckily there will be online right.... Wrong, but hey it's not like there is another version sitting there that can actually run the mode the way it was originally setup with improvements and online. 3DS or bust.

System clearly in need of the game due to Nintendo's own missteps, let's release it first on the other system that contributed to the struggles of said first system.

As for the Ice Climbers being cut, I can't say I'm too bothered that they're gone, but Sakurai's reasoning as to keeping roster parity is a little hard to swallow. At this point the Wii U version needs all of the incentives it can get to get people to buy it.

Unfortunate, but I'd take portable smash over 1 character. Kinda boggles my mind that they didn't keep them in the WiiU version though, especially if they had them running in the engine already.

I am suggesting that yes, the Ice Climbers scraped the bottom of the barrel of characters people gave 4 shits about, along with ROB and Pichu. Tier lists be damned.

Oh, look. It's that guy telling other people how they feel.

[Edit] Never mind there is no point in getting myself banned for being a dick.

...again.

Carry on, brave Ice Climber fans.
