Sakurai defends Dragon Quest X Online

Sakurai is right. This is the natural evolution of the series, and we should embrace it. Now, please kill 17 spiders and give me their legs so I can give you some pants.

I just hope this means that Nintendo is working harder at having a competent online system for their consoles. I would think that after taking a bet like this with one of their main franchises, Square Enix would try to ensure that Nintendo is on top of this.

But then again, this is Square Enix (who outsourced most of their other online RPG) and this is Nintendo (Who wouldn't know what the internet was if it bit them on the nose)

Whenever a developer says anything like "It would be good if the game industry didn't stagnate, why not wait to hate?", GAFers rush to tear down the developer for not doing exactly what they preach, ignoring that you still have to work with publishers and sell a million copies to break even.

It's funny that this doesn't work this way in any other industry. If Christopher Nolan criticized the need for every movie to be a blockbuster or not get proper studio funding, people wouldn't be going "WHOA, WHOA, hold on...uh, Batman?"

"They need to mix things up or it's getting stale!"
"How dare they screw up my favourite franchise!"
It's always the same, isn't it? Looking forward to this game either way and can't wait to try it.

no true DQ fan WANTS this change they are making to it, and they KNOW that but guess what? they don't give a crap and are desperately trying to use the good name and selling power of DQ to turn it into a cash cow using the MMO system since they heard that is where the money is nowadays...

they are a business after all

I'm sorry, I know i told you that i had pants as a reward for you but Tom took those pants. Go find Tom in the Slimelord Cavern and he'll give you them.

*finds Tom*

Kill 10 slimes and i'll give you the pants that were promised to you.

.......

But anyways, i don't have problems with games evolving over time, but that doesn't mean i always like the direction, kind of like all the RPG franchises that are now shootery.

I wouldn't go so far as to generalize all DQ Fans under the same thought.

forget it being online... look at the graphics.... and look how plain the areas look. Plus the character models aren't great looking when you compare it to Blue Dragon.

Don't forget that this is a multiplatform game with one of the platforms being known for an underwhelming online experience.

This is certainly not the title to judge Nintendo's (new) online philosophy.

?

Isn't this for Wii though? I'm not knocking the Wii but worse graphics are kinda a given in this scenario.

For someone who keeps remaking Smash Bros, he should be careful about criticizing stagnation.

Are you trolling or do you really think Melee and Brawl are rehashes of 64? Or are you saying he doesnt do anything other than Smash Bros.? Im confused.

It's sad that after all the shit they've done with FF I still hoped that DQ was too important to them for them to fuck up (IX wasn't great but it wasn't terrible either) and see the game the this change just screams "Ok boys we're cashing in!". Hopefully XI will be a return to normal.

maybe you're right, but i just find it hard to imagine fans of the old school DQs that loved those games would NOT want a sprawling, awesome new single player DQ for the Wii and would instead want this White Knight chronicles light wanna be game or something...

granted there is still a TINY chance the game will turn out good but still this is NOT what DQ was all about!

It's like making the next Zelda an online only, mmo type game or something, it just doesn't make sense!

I think they're too similar for a series I think is crap. The quality is subjective though of course, and for someone with a Pokemon avatar, you might be last on the list of people I care to hear your opinion of stagnation from.

It's funny how everyone else seems to disagree with you, isn't it?

we judge by avatars now?

cmon son

Dragon Quest games usually evolved, but within the sphere of what the series was about... until IX. DQX has taken the ideas I disliked in IX and essentially made something seemingly different from what I enjoy about the series. It's not about evolution for me, I just don't like the direction it's going because I don't enjoy those sort of things.

I don't think being a dick is really called for.

I wonder how long they peruse this avenue of thought before the backlash gets to be too much, I recall what happened to the initial direction of Dragon Quest XI.

If this causes Nintendo to have to evolve their online systems along with it, then it's for the best.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I'm not thrilled per se that the game is online now, but the more worrisome thing for me is that I haven't had exactly the best experience playing online games on the Wii. SSBB is a perfect example. Of course, it might actually force Nintendo to try to be serious with their online infrastructure for the WiiU.

I thought his post was obnoxious, so I was obnoxious in return. If you don't think it's called for, then that's unfortunate, I recommend adding me to your ignore list or reporting me to a mod, because I would do exactly the same thing at any other time, and have.

Your initial post was obnoxious. Do you play fighting games or do you just have a special hatred for Smash Bros. that you cannot see what's a remake and a sequel?

I can't say I have any fond memories of KI, I never played it, so I'm not hurt by the new direction, but the game looks shit.

I think DQ has gone in very interesting directions, not all I agree with personally, and I'm sure DQX will make them lots of cash, but I can't have imagined they could have put me off more.

duckroll said:
I think the game looks kinda shit too, but the original KI really sucked too, so at least the series is consistent! Lol.
Huh? Are we all looking at the same Kid Icarus on 3DS?

Oh wow, did someone not get enough love as a kid? Its okay. There there. No need to be so cynical.

Well, here's how little I care about how much you care about my opinion...

Here is my opinion:

Its not a crap series and the games are great.! :)

Quality is subjective, content is not. Nor are physics engines, overall game development, or feature sets or game mechanics.

This has nothing to do with opinion. Since Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the best selling entry to date (of a whopping THREE entries wow!), and most critically acclaimed (by the media), and has the MOST variation + new features, you cant say the series stagnated. Its the peak.

I respect that you have your views, there was no need to feel threatened by my ultimate presence and try to quell my inevitably amazing response. Thanks for letting me know you think I'm so awesome that you had to try and put me down before I even responded.

You hurt my feelings, bro.

Edit: I think KI looks fun and graphically nice, but like many others the cramped control scheme does worry me.

I wish they would translate all of Sakurai's twitter updates :(
I mean, they can't be any more insignificant than Kojima's, and his are available in English

People who don't know what progress looks like shouldn't be calling things stagnant. Sums up most people who are obsessed with "innovation".

As for Sakurai though, I don't think many people would see DQ becoming FFXI(in more ways than one) as a proper evolution. More like splicing and probably not for the better.

Cute. I'll respond, because you did bother to compose a fair response, so it's only fair.

That's great, lots of people do, I do not. And Pokemon is pretty much the perfect example to me of how you cripple a franchise creatively. I'm playing thru White right now, and it's still fundamentally solid, but I care less every time they bring out what is essentially the same experience, weaker for former creativity taxing the current game every time.

Game engines and large amounts of content do not show creativity to me. To a pokemon fan, they very well might.

The version on the best selling console sold the best? Convincing stuff.

While I can see why you'd think that was my intent, you are wrong. I was literally just saying anyone who thinks Pokemon is a franchise worthy of praise is a poor judge of the continued creativity of a franchise. However, you certainly could take issue with me assuming you thought that based on an avatar, it was a baseless assumption.
Kyzer said:

I thought you post was objectionable, as you seemingly did mine. However that response from me was deliberately nasty, so I do apologize.

So guys I guess every fighting game ever made since Street Fighter II is just a remake of the previous game.

I would love to see people move on from their "I got my preconceptions about MMO quests in 1997, never really cared to look for more" mindset, to a bit more forward.

Really now, even WoW:Cataclysm offers a LOT more traditionally good quests even in the starting zone. And with 100 times the variety that some of the MMO-haters could imagine, especially if played for the first time.

Being an MMO does not pose any restriction at all regarding what type of quests can and will be in the game, that is for sure. If they decide to have dumb grind quest, it wont be because it is an MMO. It will be because they decided to have dumb grind quests.
