Sakurai Discusses current and future Smash Bros DLC in Famitsu

Maybe they could do Ice Climbers for New 3DS and Wii U but not the orginal 3DS.

Oh man, alienating the larger half of the handheld population for one DLC character would be such a bad idea. I'd rather them put out a definitive version for NX with all these characters plus DLC and Ice Climbers then do something like that.

NiGHTS?

He's a really recognizable SEGA character IMO, and he'd play quite unlike any character that's already in Smash. They could use his transformations from Journey of Dreams for parts of his moveset.

He's appeared on Nintendo hardware at least four times (first time was on PSO GameCube, through a downloadable GBA minigame). The last main entry in his series was a Wii exclusive.

I was thinking about a second Sega rep yesterday, but couldn't wrap my head around any non-Sonic character besides NiGHTS. He would be a very unique character. That'd be really intriguing to see in the Smash bros playstyle.

I'm the first that want the return of the Ice Climbers (my brother mains them).

But the Ice Climbers players play with them because the character is unique feature, they play as a duo. So, if they add a solo Ice Climber, his players will lose the reason to play with that character. So I don't know if that is the best solution.

Aren there any non-Sonic Sega characters on the level of Ryu? I'd hate to see Shadow or Knuckles in the game. :/
Objectively, there aren't. Sonic, Pac-Man, Street Fighter, and Mega Man have all sold over 30 million copies, but I can't find any evidence that another Sega franchise has even sold over 10 million copies. Sega is essentially the "Sonic and a ton of minor IPs" company. We most definitely aren't going to get a second Sega character as DLC.

We know that the 3DS had issues with the unmodified Brawl-based Cimbers and their AI.

But we don't know if there's truly no workaround for them. I would say anything is possible, especially since Sakurai has gone back on so many on-the-record statements.

The Original 3DS makes up a majority of the 3DS userbase, so that isn't happening, right.

I'd be happy if they just made Ice Climbers a Duck Hunt-esque duo but Ice Climber isn't a very popular game and I think the uniqueness of having an AI partner is the only thing that would bring them back to the game.

From what I've seen the Nintendo characters with the most demand have been K. Rool, Isaac, and Inkling.
The thing is that the Inklings have a decent chance of getting in without the ballot as per Nintendo hardcore pushing Splatoon as one of their new big IPs. Characters like King K. Rool, Isaac, & Wonder Red have no chance without the ballot, so dev time on ballot characters should be spent on characters like them assuming they're all as popular in the ballot as we're being led to believe.

If you want to go with technicalities, you could go Atlus & get Jack Frost (a recurring character in the SMT games & its spin-offs). Plus it helps that Atlus is among Nintendo's very few third party buddies left (if you count Atlus separate from Sega, Nintendo pretty much only has 4 of those remaining).

King Ka Rool and Toad should had already been in the Smash Universe!

With that being said, Dr. Robotnick since all the main Nintendo characters other than DK has their villains in the roster and Impa for more female characters in Smash.

Goku and Mr. Krabs would be legendary though!

I've always wondered if the A.I. controlled Ice Climber could've either be (visually) downgraded to clock at 30 FPS or work similar to how the Pikmin function in the 3DS version of the game. I would be fine with that compromise than for them to be left out completely.

It's time.

I love Banjo-Kazooie but I honestly don't think they should be in Smash. The third parties we have currently are from companies that's have a good relationship with Nintendo. Sonic games tend to sell better on Nintendo consoles, both Sega and Namco have helped with development of some of their titles, and Capcom has had Monster Hunter exclusively on 3DS for quite a while.

Microsoft has no real relationship with Nintendo (especially since Rare's handheld team is dead) because they are a competitor. I'm aware Phil Spencer wouldn't mind Banjo being included but that's clearly because that means free advertisement to Microsoft. What does Nintendo gain from this? Keep in mind there are people that still want Snake back despite how Konami has been operating lately. If Banjo was included in Smash 4 and was cut in the next game or removed because of sudden bad blood between Nintendo and Microsoft, we would never hear the end of it. I don't think it's a good decision on Nintendo's part.
I also just really want K. Rool, so sue me.

I was thinking about this statement and wondered...the Mii was so "characters who aren't in the game could be put in the game!" and the costumes seemed to line up with that.

While we got a Link costume and all, I'm wondering if other characters were put into those spots in order to please fans as they consider that "playing as the character who can't be added" for some reason. Thus, anyone who has a costume to them is already in, and this comment of fan service is creating tons and tons of Mii costumes rather than characters.

I'd love to see several characters, but I'm starting to get a gut feeling it's a bunch of Mii costumes.

You hit the nail on the goddamn head (I was actually gonna make this post as well). Every single third party rep in Smash are from companies that Nintendo has a good relationship with. The only other third party company that has such a relationship with Nintendo & doesn't have a rep in Smash is Atlus, but as stated earlier, they technically count as Sega.

Nintendo's not gonna agree to give Microsoft free advertising by putting Banjo in Smash unless they get something huge in return, & even then, there's no guarantee that he'll ever return (I.E., another Snake situation).

Most of the Mii Costume characters have some other thing holding them back (Dunban being in Shulk's Final Smash, Harada being against Tekken characters in Smash on top of Sakurai not being able to think of a way they can work in Smash, Isabelle being an Assist Trophy, etc.). The Mii costumes themselves don't rule out a character, & the Inklings have pretty much everything else going for them. I doubt that we'll just get Mii costumes from here on out. It's gonna be legit characters. Besides, the backlash would be unreal if we only got Mii Costumes from here on out.

Banjo is a ridiculous request...but Sakurai is a ridiculous man. You never know!

Good thing he's already in then.
Are you in?

I didn't know only Ridley fans play Smash.
He is the biggest absent character right now. Very high in demand pre-release for two games. Metroid is one of Nintendo's biggest IPs, but has only one representative.

Ridley, K Rool, and Banjo would be the best fanservice characters by far. I'll be salty if Ridley doesn't happen.
I am not expecting it. I expect Wolf, and that is all.

The ONLY thing that would be better than Ridley.

Literally or figuratively?

I'm not a Metroid fan, but I agree. Though one could argue that K. Rool is bigger thanks to his Japanese popularity.

As awesome as Bayonetta would be, there's a bit of a problem with that.
So you'd want a character where half of her appeal is being suggestive & inappropriate while giving zero fucks about it to be censored to hell & back to keep the ESRB happy? Yeah, no thanks. For reference, they had to remove the Tharja trophy from the 3DS version to keep the game's E10+ rating, forget Bayonetta.
Plus you have to consider that her main weapons are guns that shoot bullets, something that Sakurai has historically been strongly against (to the point where Snake used almost exclusively explosives as far as weapons go, not even his tranquilizer gun was used).

Metroid is in the awkward situation where it needs more representation but has nobody significant to fill the part. The only one who could is Ridley, but he literally can't fit into Smash without looking weird.

Eggman would be a perfect second SEGA rep. He's a villain, he's retro, would have a unique moveset - though this may have been undermined by Bowser Jr - and he avoids the "Sonic's shitty friends" stigma that people seem to cling on to.

They could avoid the potential Bowser Jr. clone situation by focusing on the Badniks. But yeah, if they aren't gonna go Atlus for a potential 2nd Sega rep, Eggman would be their best bet without opening the "Sonic's shitty friends" can of worms.

I don't recall all this K. Rool love during Brawl. He kind of feels like a Geno. Maybe we are just getting that low on options, though. I am fine with K. Rool making it in, but I can't say I would be excited for him. He is a pretty ZzZ tier villain. Never does anything interesting, his fights were always boring...

I would honestly rather have Dixie Kong.

However, I am happy no matter who gets in. My expectations are at zero. :-)

Simon Belmont would be a great addition. But how would he look? Is there any canonical design out there that would work?

In Bayonetta 2, the "sexy" moments number at like...3. You can do her without over-the-top sex. ZSS is already a latex Barbie doll.

Bayonetta is also easy to do without bullets. In Bayo 1, you can give her laser guns or rocket launchers.

Sakurai may not want to put Ridley playable, but the fans want him playable. He's acknowledged his popularity. It cannot be ignored. If Sakurai is all about fan service from here on out, he has to make Ridley playable.

While granted, it's better than nothing, Love is Blue &/or Scarborough Fair is synonymous with Bayonetta as her trademark weapon of choice & it'd be a bit odd to see her without them.

If I recall, didn't he try to make him playable already & fail doing so (someone correct me on this if I'm wrong, I feel like I'm forgetting something)? Plus there's the whole boss-in-Pyrosphere thing to consider.

Because everybody wanted Diddy in first. After Diddy was revealed on the Dojo, K. Rool's popularity skyrocketed, but it was too late. Geno is a secondary character who appeared in one game. K. Rool is the main antagonist of one of Nintendo's most popular franchises, one that is woefully underrepresented in Smash. That's one of the weirdest comparisons I've heard in a long time. If you consider K. Rool's boss fights to be "boring and uninteresting", I hope you're not a fan of Bowser.
