none of the current consoles are home to very many standout, niche games. The PS2 spectrum of titles is all on handhelds now.
Also: Every bombed game doesn't get to qualify as "niche", especially in events where their precursors were well followed or in some cases fucking Greatest Hits (see Odin Sphere).
Host Samurai said:Yes you have the right idea. Niche does not mean SHIT! nor bombed. 95% of that list was just shit/not niche/not released yet.
Yes most of the niche stuff is definitely on the handhelds this generation, but the Wii, in terms of home console the Wii in the niche gaming system of choice.
First off I believe the Wii is a phenomenal accomplishment and a great addition to the Video game space. Nintendo did a very smart thing by staying away from the graphics arms race and created a product that was different and could stand out.
Given this design direction the Wii in my mind is more of a toy then a Games machine, and i say millions of Wii Fit players agree with me!. Its a Toy that plays some pretty good video games, but the majority of users that has bought a Wii I believe would never consider buying a X360 or a PS3. Simply because I believe they would not be interested in that experience, the Wii initial experience is so new and refreshing, they come over and play it with someone or see it in the store and it becomes almost an impulse buy.
They then play if a few times and BECAUSE they are not gamers, they put it away. It might come out from time to time at a party etc, where some new people get to experience the fun and now they go buy one, and the circle repeats itself, thus it spreads like a virus. How many people do you think has come over to a party and played a PS3 or X360 game and then gone a bough a console (Rock band and guitar hero games excluded!), right!.
So i really meant no disrespect to Nintendo at all or the Wii, just expressed the opinion that i think the Wii will need a successor sooner rather then later, as its Newness and Virus spreading capabilities will soon run out. Just my 2 cents!

No, seedonny2112 said:I think most Wii owners must be more "we love to hook up cables" inclined than me. For me, I hook up a system with the cables out of the way, so it would be a pain to unhook everything and put it up time and time again. I just can't fathom these mythological Wii owners who apparently love to hook up the power cord, A/V inputs, sensor bar, setup the sensor bar, and then play the Wii every time they pull it out for parties. I always thought the average joe didn't like messing with cables, but I guess that was just a misconception.
I think everyone did.louis89 said:Found this sentence amusing.

The Wii owner is apparently so confused about what a game is, they think that hooking up cables every time is in fact a game for their toy (not a game machine, don't ever make that mistake). I mean, really, what is going behind the TV and plugging things in except for the same basic principle behind Wii Boxing?

Well yeah, of course, and I suppose that's not terribly unreasonable to say, but exactly how he said it, that "the Wii is not an entertainment focused product" is simply false. If his definitions of "entertainment focused" are different than others then he's not wrong by his own definitions, but the fact of the matter is that he has to go by everyone else's definition, which says he's wrong. There's also the problem that it's somehow a problem that the Wii isn't a big box entertainment center. There isn't, unless there was something wrong with the NES through the PS2, and the insinuation really cuts into his credibility. The whole "IT'S AN OPINION!" counter just makes things worse.donny2112 said:You know, I wonder if he was just trying to say that PS3 and 360 are trying to be set-top boxes (i.e. central point for all entertainment), and Wii is just trying to be a games machine. Of course, his later point that the Wii "more of a toy then a Games machine" goes against that, but it's easy to trip over your feet when you're backpedaling.
I think your initial comment about the Wii being a virus has been taken out of context by many. Can you clear up what you meant by that term specifically?
The analogy that I used stating the Wii is like a virus, was in reference to how I think a lot of the sales of Wii Systems has happened. I think a lot of people showed up at someones house, they had the Wii out and played some games (most likely Wii Sports) thought wow this is cool and different! and went out and bought one, played a few rounds of Wii sports, possibly with some other friends whom did the same thing, Looked at it and said wow this is cool and different! and went and bought one as well. So the Virus spreads, but its not that contagious, because most of these people viewed the Wii as a Toy and bought it as a Toy not a games machines, thus have not continued to play with it other than occasionally, and most likely have not bought any serious games or many other games for it (hence the small tie ratio for Wii software).
[...]
You contend that many traditional games have failed on the Wii due to the systems mass audience, but Ive long felt that such games have struggled because publishers and developers dont put the same kind of money and effort into their Wii games that they do for other systems. For example, the system often receives spin-offs and ports of old games rather than new entries in popular franchises. Do you see this as also being a part of the problem?
Its a little bit of a chicken and egg problem, people see that a lot of titles do not sell much at all (mostly because they suck!) so they feel hesitant to risk a lot of cash on an unproven thing so they do another me to product or simply dont invest enough into their title to lift it above the competition. There is always opportunity available for a high production quality product to stand out if you are willing to take the risk BUT (and it s a big but) you have to really know your audience and how to communicate your product offering to them, which is the hard part on the Wii.
