Salted caramel is honestly terrible (imo). Who made it and why?

I had the misfortune of being fed a salted caramel chocolate a few years ago and the experience has stuck with me ever since. It was around a year or two ago when the salted caramel phase was at it's peak, and everything was salted caramel. I also tried a salted caramel sauce on ice cream and it was disgusting too. I remember during graduation one of the staff bought flavoured frozen yoghurt for everyone as well and lo and behold - salted caramel flavour.

Cut to now. I thought we as a society had moved past it but today I saw a recipe for "banana pudding with salted caramel sauce" and I couldn't believe that people were still doing it, I seriously thought it was just one of those things that people pretended to like to seem cool because it was a phase and that's why nobody had really mentioned it since.

Do any of you actually like it? Why? And more importantly, what started the craze?

Salt + sweet is an amazing combination and I love it. Gimme salted caramel, seasalted chocolate, salty-as-fuck liquorice...

It's nothing new. Salted sweet things have been around forever. It really accents the sweetness.

Example: Salted watermelon has been popular since before the civil war.

fake edit: this will be another thread backfire just like the lamb thread

I'd like to hug whoever made it. They're cool peeps in my book.

Wat?!

Salted caramel is the best.
What's the point in eating the caramel at that point though? The salt completely overpowers any of the sweetness so it just tastes like you're eating a mouthful of seawater with a strange slightly buttery taste.

So uh, why do you actually dislike it?

Edit: I see now. I don't know what to say other than a lot of people like salt + sweetness. It's not that strange.

Out of interest, where are you all posting from? I read that it seems to be big in America which might explain a lot of the responses in this thread...

Well. Salt brings out the sweetness. Ever put salt on a peach or apple after biting it? Same principle.

But you can overdo the salt. I do agree. It seemed you had a bad product.

My fav is salted caramel ice cream and shakes.

Actually to be honest , I love caramel either way but also have to admit that many sources smother too much caramel in and on things and thus also too much salt.

What's the point in eating anything with salt on it then? I don't get it.
You salt things don't you?

Too much salt is definitely a bad thing though.

The worst with these kinds of foods is that you have to add even more salt and more sugar to get any decent taste. When you don't do any of those frankenstein combinations a little sugar or a little salt can give a lot of flavor

All three of the things I tried though seemed way more salty than anything else. The chocolate in particular was literally like eating a salt cube.

And I don't put salt on fruit :/ the only thing I can even think of putting salt on that isn't exactly ~savoury~ is a lemon or other citrus fruit as part of the shot cycle, but I don't think it's particularly tasty.

Well it's more common than you think. Definitely not part of a trend. My favorite is salted pineapple. Amazing.

You must have some hypersensitivity to salt. I've had lots of salted caramels and they're all rather subtle.
I love salt on some things (chips/fries... actually that might be about it) but am I just missing out on good brands of salted caramel or something?

I love pineapple on pizza which is slightly unrelated but follows along with the savoury + sweet motif.

I'm actually on board with you and live in the US.

I've been fed "salted sweet things" before and it just ends up tasting like a mouthful of salt to me.

It may be worth noting that I don't salt anything ever, and don't eat much salty foods which are EVERYWHERE in the US. That may have something to do with it.

I do put a lot of salt on fries/chips but I don't salt other things 99% of the time so maybe it's that. But I just can't see how anyone can taste past the salt, even if it's just a small amount.

This dude and the Lamb guy need to start a blog.

This isn't bad. He tried it and just doesn't like it. Not like he was tearing into it saying "this is great, what is that salty flavor though?"

"Oh, that's salt. You're eating salted caramel"

"Salted caramel?! I never intended to ever eat this! How could you?"

Salted caramel is not a single thing. Perhaps you just had a bad experience with something. Give it another shot OP. Salt can really improve almost any flavor, including sweet. Salt is awesome.
