Samsung Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge |OT|

I have two quick questions:
1. Where are RAW images stored?
2. For those who are using Chrome Beta, does it overall drain more battery between performance and more frequent updates or relatively the same as the stable release?

I gather slightly more. I still went 22 hours with heavy use.

Have a question about the Samsung Pay promotion. I was wonder what was the catch to it in order to get the free giftcard. Like is there a set amount you must spend in order to get it or does any purchase qualify?

For anyone who has used an iphone 6: does the 4GB of RAM make a notable difference in application performance?

you are looking at two different eco system. iphone does not require that much ram.

think of it like ps3 had 256mb of memory but to match the performance you pc probably needed 4 gb or more .

I bought bubble gum and it worked just fine. You're good to go.

Got the Silver Edge.

It's fantastic looking.

Yep that's the one I got. Really sleek without being unnecessarily flashy. If people find good themes from the store lmk, especially if they have good always-on screens. Most of them don't. Almost like the makers are forced to use a really bad template. :/

Yep, on paper 4gb sounds good but optimization still reigns.

Just trying to weigh whether im going with a iphone 6S Plus or S7 Edge

I also want to see if Apple will announce a VR headset here in a few days

Speaking of VR.

My wife and I tried VR pr0n for the first time today.

No joke, We both felt it was like we were cheating on each other the immersion was that good.

It's like someone's right there. It's like YOU'RE right there. It's.... Yeah.

Welp, I picked up an S7 Edge. Device is pretty damn awesome, will comb through this thread for tips...

Still feel a bit bad about leaving my family out to dry without iMessage, but I can't deny myself curved screen goodness.

Updated impressions: as someone who's coming from the Note 4 I'm still pretty damn impressed by how awesome the S7 Edge. The difference in screen size is negligible as whatever I lost in estate I gained in ergonomics— it's so damn pleasing to hold compared to my bulky Note! I also just got the thin Spigen Gunmetal case, and it looks so good with the silver color, adding minimal bulk.

The dual Edge screen is impressive, and I'm even starting to rely on the "gimicky" edge features. I was afraid the curves would compromise the viewing angles but it's not case, at least in my experience.

Performance is great so far. I also can't get over how improved TW is, to the point where I'm not considering a different launcher. And while I miss my gigantic 16MP Note 4 photos, the improved lighting, AF speed, extra features, and snappy launch make up for it.

The only area where I'm not getting results as good as everyone else is the battery life. From the first 4 full charges my results were all over the place. Some good and some not good.

I'd like to see some screens caps of battery usage/consumption for those getting really impressive usage and SOTs. Also are you guys on Exynos or Qualcomm versions?

Just trying to weigh whether im going with a iphone 6S Plus or S7 Edge

I went from the 6S Plus to the S7 Edge. Here are my thoughts after 5 days:

- Edge feels much better in the hand thanks to the smaller body. No hand/finger strain at all, which I was getting with the iPhone. On the flip side, it feels like the Edge will break the first time I drop it because of the wrap around screen, which is terrifying.

- 6S+ had better battery life for my heavy daily use, you can just watch the Edge's battery drain a percent per minute in some cases while the screen is on (and even at half brightness). iOS has much better standby battery as well, despite whatever Google claims about Doze mode.

- Still not crazy about how the keyboard extends onto the curve of the screen, makes typing Q/1 and P/0 pretty weird.

- The Edge gets extremely hot under what I'd consider normal use conditions compared to the iPhone (just flicking through Instagram for 10 minutes).

- iPhone fingerprint scanner is faster, but sometimes to the point of being too fast (missing lockscreen notifications).

- The cameras are in a different league with the S7 being the best on the market by a mile.

- Apps are still far and away better on iOS. I haven't used Android in about a year, and I've been shocked to see the sorry state that some Android apps are still in.

- iOS's control center is still better than the TouchWiz quick settings menu in the shade IMO by virtue of housing audio controls as well, but I know a lot of people like customizing which settings show up there on Android.

The S7 has greater VR capabilities, which is quite frankly stunning at times.

- Apple having an automatic daily full system backup is still a killer feature of their ecosystem IMO.

Overall, iOS and the 6S+ are the more polished products with less app crashes (can't tell you how many times snapchat has crashed on my S7 this week) and better battery life. The S7 still has some compelling features that make it worth a look if you're willing to live with some rough edges in order to get some other cool functionality. The best way I can describe the iOS experience vs Android is that iOS just gets out of your way at the expense of little customization. There was rarely a day I felt like I was fighting my phone, which I've felt several times in my 5 days with the Edge...a frustrating sign that I was hoping Android could overcome by now.

I really wish my friends would download what's app so that we could continue to communicate like we did with imessage
I am 100% with you. As much as I am enjoying the phone so far, having to make sure all of my individual and group texts get working again with SMS is a huge pain for me and the people I communicate with

Also, I am feeling stupid here but I can't figure out how to make it so fingerprints unlock my device. I've set my fingerprints in settings and have the "lock screen type" to fingerprint, but it still just says swipe to unlock. Any suggestions?

And does SwiftKey really not have a double tap space = period option? Bummer.

Did you enable Smart Lock at somepoint?

Unless you have Smart Lock on, Settings>Lock Screen>Fingerprints>Fingerprint Unlock On. You can then unlock from the Swipe to Unlock screen even though it doesn't say fingerprint.

If you're not getting the challenge at all, check Smart Lock per above or under Lock Screen>Secure Lock Settings make sure you have Lock instantly and Lock automatically on depending on your prefs.

Swiftkey definitely has that. Settings>Typing>Typing and Autocorrect>Tick the Quick Period box.

Got mine today. Are there any pages with a list of stuff to do to optimize the phone? I remember with the S5 there was a good page that involved turning down some unnecessary effects in the developer options. Also, what themes would people recommend?

Does anyone else have an issue connecting to the Oculus store? I can't ever maintain a connection and videos don't work at all. :(

One last question - is there a way to stop the notification that an SD card is plugged in every time I start up the phone? Seems really weird and unnecessary...

The standard launcher with that Blinkfeed-like Flipboard is amazing. Very, very slick and fast, love to get the latest news without launching the browser. Edge panel also looks cool displaying weather and data usage.

So I can get this phone 50% off at work via a staff offer only 1 per staff member.

2 questions.

Worth the upgrade over the M9?
S7 or S7 Edge?

50% off is a no brainer imo. And depending on how much you use your phone, I say go for it. You have a better day to day phone, with better battery, better camera, video recording, faster browsing, VR potential, better gaming, water proofing and a slicker looking device.

On normal vs Edge, really depends on what your size preferences are. Want a bigger screen and bigger battery? Go Edge. Smaller screen and more compact phone, S7. I went Edge this time, and I'm glad I did.

Misses dropped her gold edge and smashed the back glass, the second day and she was going to get a cover too.

Glad phone insurance is a thing. Poor girl, it was her bday pressie too.

Luckily the back glass is an inexpensive fix, even if she didn't have insurance. Front screen is the problem area, as you have to replace the AMOLED panel itself and not just the glass.

Strongly don't agree on battery. I went to bed last night with 40% battery left, 14 hours off the charger and 6 hours sot. This Edge is beast.

Just make sure that location is turned off for the weather widget. I also disabled location history and scanning, but that's because I don't use public transport and work 3 minutes from home. Google Now isn't good in those kinds of situations as it has nothing to say.

I've seen stats somewhere, can't remember where that show iPhone to have the more general app crashes.

The fact you have to turn off shit out the box is embarrassing really Samsung should be aiming for a better experience for the general consumer who does not know a thing about battery drain. It should just work really Jesus they have had years to sort it out.

The general consumer isnt as stupid as you think - you dont need a master degree to turn off widgets lol.

You don't no it's easy but having worked in the industry for many a year it's still something that most people would have no clue how to do. They just want the phone to look pretty and take good pictures. I just don't think the way android works with the skins for the different manufacturers do it any favours.

as a heads up, my girlfriend had her broxen s6 edge plus repaired by samsung and it cost her £160. i assume the s7 edge would be similar.

Uhhh where did you get it? Asking for a friend... :D

Just got the S7 myself. Damn nice phone, especially as I'm coming from a cheap Lumia. Tho I have to say, I will really miss live tiles on windows phone. But being able to get all my photos back on the OneDrive app was nice.

Went for the onyx black S7. First luxury item ive bought myself since I got a 970 in 2014, and the wife said she'll pay half the cost as an anniversary present so I only have to pay 150 euro altogether

Any guides out there?

Research and stuff.

I only turn it off because it doesn't offer me anything useful due to my limited daily pattern so no need to give Google all my movements for nothing.

The battery life on this thing is insane. I'm hitting a full day with 6 hours sot daily and there's still some left in the tank.

If you live in a big city that you're familiar with, Google Now isn't as useful. The only reason for me to use location history is for potentially more opinion reward surveys. Not really worth it it that much at the expense of battery so both are going to stay off.

Everyone's battery usage is different. For whatever reason, iOS has always given me more battery life.

Maybe because you do more Web browsing? iPhones tend to be good in battery life there. Or apps that you use the most are having a more significant impact on Android compared to iOS? Usually having bad standby time is an app issue.

Agree.

I'm on my galaxy s6 edge and I'm here going on airplane mode to save battery life throughout my work day. Lol pathetic indeed. I need to know if the g5 has good battery life. If not I'm gonna upgrade to the s7 edge

Anyone having network connection issues? For my S7 edge I get really poor speeds on my home wi-fi, even though my old S5 has no issues. Even on mobile data I'm getting lower speeds than on my old phone. Did a bit of googling and some suggested it could be an IPv6 or DNS issue, but there doesn't seem to be much helpful info on the topic. It's making this phone unusable for me.

The annoying thing about it is that it's bad app design. There's no need at all for a weather widget to be polling location frequently enough to have a notable dent on battery life (if that's the case -- and with those widgets it often is unfortunately). It's kind of like how FB and Oculus apps will just assault your battery (and this is true for iOS and Android) because they're so unnecessarily aggressive about waking the device up the check for random things constantly.

All that said, so far so good on my S7 Edge (I did remove the weather widget immediately though).

Just got the silver s7 edge yesterday and am loving it. Coming from a Note 4. Before the Note, I was iPhone only for like 8 years. No plans to ever return to iPhones.. this thing is too slick.

Couple of questions for s7 owners;

- Are you using any launchers or sticking with default (I don't know much about launchers; heard about Nova, etc)
- Any other guides on tips/customization set-ups for the edge/etc worth looking at?
- Does anyone here have the gear 2 watch? I went with the free VR from samsung (assuming they still have them in stock), but that watch looks pretty cool. Not sure it's something I'll ever actually use though.

Gah.....waiting for this stupid offer redemption for the Gear VR and the year of Netflix is stupid.

Also, last week I thought I had a glitch on mine as at one point two submissions came up when I went to check my status. Same IMEI and MAC #s associated with both. Now I'm back down to one.

Tom Petty had it right, the waiting is the hardest part.

I downloaded the material dark theme and turned off all Samsung s-apps. The phone is pretty clean then, although I noticed it is still taking up 2.5gb of RAM doing normal stuff like browsing and YouTube

Even in web browsing, the S7 Edge should perform better. I know if all I did was web browsing with mine (Exynos), I reckon I could get 11+ hours screen on time easily.

I think there are probably other factors in play, like specific settings or apps, background processes, brightness of screen etc. Don't forget the S7/S7 Edge have far brighter screens compared to the 6S/6S Plus, around 855 nits vs the iPhone's reported 550, so if you're setting it an average higher brightness, you'll naturally end up using more power too.
