Samsung Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge |OT|

Not open for further replies.
Finally got my S7 edge in the mail and activated yesterday morning.

It's been sublime aside from a few quirks of android I forgot about, and some iOS muscle memory I still have. That and I have to adjust how I hold the phone because my fat hands touch the edge screen and fuck up inputs occasionally.
My biggest gripe(aside from the absolute shit emojis) is there being no official podcast solution. I know Google Play Music is supposed to roll out podcasts to android soon, but what does gaf suggest I use to hold me over until then? Or is there some way to force my self into the early access to Play Music Podcasts?

Pocket casts. Great app, works across devices (even between ios and android), and has all the features i need in a podcast app.

I've been having some really long text conversations lately and when the text log gets bigger enough it completely covers the message so I can't read the message I'm responding to. Is there a way to get it to go down without sending the text?

All you need is a C cable for your standard USB wall charger, not that big of a deal. I can't wait for the C shift, it's nice to plug in my Pixel C and not worry about the direction of the plug.

That's true but when I'm out, I don't carry one with me purely because I know there will be one in the office or at a friends house. I also have a few around the home because of other devices that use it.

Once USB-C gets that popular, I'll be happy, I don't want to play the cable lottery yet as I've been hearing some are straight up bad for device.

System update today has fixed all the issues I've had with the touchscreen sensitivity. I'm making far fewer mistakes typing but the main thing they addressed was touches being picked up when scrolling (I found myself entering random topics when browsing Gaf).

Also apparently it addresses edge of screen sensitivity on the Edge but I never had that problem anyway.

What carrier are you on that got an update?

Does Samnsung send a tracking number once they ship your VR/S2? My SN status flipped to this yesterday:
Code:
Congratulations! Your submission has been approved and your gift has been processed and is currently in route
But there's no tracking number and I did not receive an e-mail with one.

Guess I'll just wait until Astrolad reports he got his and then start counting down 2 weeks or so?

I have switch to Samsung default internet browser with abplus, hid the status bar up top for super full screen, and yes it has been a snappy experience thus far. Battery life seems better too.

Missing from chrome is desktop sync, but I can live with that.
Also missed the swipe down to refresh. And tabs switching felt less intuitive
And well also typing in the address bar seems a little laggy.

Conclusion is that I am sticking with Samsung internet a little longer. May ditch chrome.

So what I did was create an delivery manager account with FedEx so I can see things being delivered to my house. It was there and out for delivery before I got a tracking number. My second one is the same way. I am watching FedEx rather than Samsung. It just says it is in route, still not on FedEx yet though.

Great idea. Thanks!

Mine arrived, it's nice but seems a little laggy, is this because of it's installing and doing things or because power saver is on? A little disappointing in that respect.

I'm missing simple things so far, like double tap to unlock, auto unlocking after I type in the right pin and marking messages as read when they pop up as a notification (over from a Sony)

I got a Terrapin case of the Spigen because I wanted something plain, the case is amazing and it doesn't have 'AUTO FOCUS' or a giant logo on the back, VERY happy with this case and I rarely use them.

Installing plus power saver sounds like a lovely way to make a device chug.

I use Podkicker. It's no-frills, but it works.

Counter to most I'm unhappy with my S7. I've had it since launch and the little annoyances are adding up. I swore I'd never get another Samsung after my Note 3 and I'm really wishing I stuck with that. I justified it by saying to myself the flagship phone wouldn't face the same memory management and abandonment issues the Note 3 had. I really wanted to get rid of the Note 3 too.

Stuff that is annoying me:
  • Significantly weaker wifi and cell signal than my work iPhone 6s
  • Constantly running out of space despite having a 200GB SD card
  • After reboot SD apps won't load sometimes ( and I'm rebooting all the time due to signal issues)
  • Accidentally hitting window button all the time
  • Googling issues is not very productive (not sure if this is just a launch timing problem or not)

There's a noticable delay between pressing the home button and the transition starting, even with the double tap camera thingy turned off. That's killing it for me, this device cost half a grand, I expect more.

Is there a way to enable tap screen to wake? Pressing the power button is fiddly if I just want to see notifications on the screen without unlocking.

Also, either my character is broke or it's slow, but I've been plugged in for about 10 mins (28% started) and it's now on (27%)

I'm not feeling the hype you all did when getting yours :(

I don't know if it's any less "fiddly", but there's a setting that let's you rub the S7 Edge's edge up and down and it'll pop up your notifications there.

I just hit the power button or home button and don't have any issues really. The battery is really good even without a battery saver on, so maybe that's what's boggling things down for you.

PocketCasts. Worth every cent, and auto updates your podcasts. :)

Had a chance to really mess with the Galaxy S7 Edge that a friend bought last week. I had toyed with it at the store, but here I got to spend ~20 minutes with it in real world lighting and environemnts.

And holy shit is the screen absolutely phenomenal.

I'm an Apple guy through and through - but I'd argue the S7 Edge has possibly the best screen I've ever looked at, period. Color accuracy be damned, it's just a pleasure to view. The gap between the glass and the text is virtually nonexistent. The colors POP. The blacks are dark and inky. The whites are ever-so-slightly yellow, but hardly noticeable. The refresh rates are vastly improved based on what I remember - ghosting is almost gone.

I adored that screen.

I'd put it right up there with the new LG OLED TVs and the 5K iMac as the most gorgeous screens, ever, period.

Looks like you have perfect timing! Podcasts are now officially available on Google Play Music:

If it was simply bezel less on the side instead of curved it would be the best screen ever by far.

SD card issues are yours probably. Is it good quality? how do you have 200 gb of apps?

So.... My lock button stopped working yet again and I had to do a hard reset, and upon it turning back on I now have a corrupt SD card notification... The hell? And the only way to "fix" it is formatting. Help.

It's a SanDisk 128GB for the record.

Edit: After resetting again it seems to be fine... Guess I will keep an eye on it.

Does anyone with the SD820 have a sort of shitty GPS? The one of my Xperia worked much better.

Also when I'm driving to the client, which is an hour away I get the GPS signal lost like 3 times where my Xperia Z3 Compact never dropped.

I'm having a very strange issue on my S7 edge when connected to my home wifi. I can surf the net using chrome fine, but all of my apps are exhibiting strange connectivity behaviour, my stock market app won't refresh, twitter app the photos and videos don't load on my feed just lots of grey boxes and they play store is really slow and only loads half the images and fails to download apps most of the time, just hangs. I have 100mb Internet with no issues on my other devices. When I use the WiFi at work the phone works fine. I've downloaded all the latest system updates and spent ages fiddling with the WiFi settings in the router with no luck! I guess factory reset is the next step?

Other than that, this is the best phone I've ever owned!

Is there a way to prevent the notifications bar going ugly grey and staying on screen when in power saver mode? Such a beautiful phone and it looks trash when in power saver.

I'm getting irritated by a lot of small issues in this, sorely missing tap to wake and the finger print scanner is pretty bad compared to the Z5 series. Also, is there a way to get a mark as read on text message notifications? These were all commonly used and much missed features!

Don't use the power saver mode.
It cripples the S7.

Btw Google Dialer is now working on the S7 :)

For a more Nexus like feeling ;)

So I have tried the Gear VR a little. Seems pretty neat! I do however get a screen door effect. What adjustments can be made on the image besides the Focus wheel?

What games/musts from the store besides the free stuff should I get? All I have is MilkVR and the free games so far.

What themes are eveveryone using? I'm on the standard one, like the look of the one you have mavericktopgun.

I'm using

-Material Dark theme from the Theme Store
-Nova Launcher (latest Beta)
-Chronus weather with Plex Icons
-Moko Icon Pack
-Google Apps (Dialer, Contacts,...)
-Greenify

:)

Don't have the S7, but my previous Nexus 5x and current Moto X Pure Edition exhibits the same behavior when I'm on wireless n. The issue goes away when I'm on wireless g. I mentioned this in the Android thread before and others seem to have similar issues but with other Android devices.

Thanks, I did just try that but didn't make any difference on wireless g. Weirdly if you disconnect and connect again it works for about 20 seconds and then stops. I think it's only been happening since I got a system update on Saturday. I'm not sure if it was a network specific update (I'm on EE in the uk) but it seemed to enable wifi calling.

Edit: me writing the above prompted me to find the setting to disable wifi calling and that has completely fixed it. Can anyone explain that?

Got the spigen hybrid case yesterday; it adds a little bit of bulk, but with the phone being super slippery I don't mind.

It doesn't look that bad either (my S7 is black, I got the silver case).

Got a software update from AT&T! Got the notification right before the gym, having gotten to install it yet. I'll report back if my phone blows up.

SD card works fine 95%+ of the time. It is the Sandisk Ultra. I always pay extra for high quality cards and have never had an issue with one before.

I don't have 200 GB of apps or data. Some apps won't move to the SD card and I haven't found a way to force them to put media on the SD card. Google Play Movies, Disney Anywhere, VUDU and Amazon Video all save to the internal memory.

Where did you get that card from? Fake SanDisk cards report that they have the right capacity but actually have much less.

The market is full of fakes, even Amazon were unwittingly knocking them out at one bit.

It is not the card. I ordered it early from Amazon and it checks out fine. I just copied a 13GB video file onto it. I have no issues moving apps that can move to the SD card there or running them MOST of the time. Every now and them upon rebooting it has short-term issues reading the card. Super annoying when you just want to do something on your phone and you get no signal and have to wait for reboot + indeterminate time for SD card to start working. and exacerbated by the fact that I had to move all the apps I could to the SD card to free up space.

As you can see in the picture there is no option to move the Amazon video app to the SD card.

I personally would have been happier paying more for a 128GB iPhone without these kinds of issues. I don't have time for it.
