It begins...

Matter of fact, why *does* it cost so much?

Then again, the galaxy s was ~$800 unlocked, so I shoudn't be too suprised

but damn

iPhone is like $600 unlocked but that doesn't change the iPod Touches for being half the price.

Love love love the iPad. Never used android before, so I got no hate for it.

I'm just excited to see a good iPad competitor coming out, it'll keep apple on their toes. THe more competition the better for the consumer. iOS or Android fans, we both win.

Don't you see? This is just the beginning. Give it five years and there will be a endless sea of blood. Blood I tell you!

Why no usb, why?

If they want these things to be looked at like a new type of computer (like a netbook) instead of a giant smartphone w/o calling why dont they add at least one usb?

So yeah I'm not super hyped for this or anything but I've very recently started practicing making flyers every day or so and decided to do this as practice (lowed the quality by a fair amount so it won't eat up too much bandwidth):

A bit Appely I know.

Putting innovative, inexpensive and ingenious which are 3 things it is NOT ruins it. Just say a device so advanced it must be from out of this world and then display the product name Samsung Galaxy Tab.

I also wouldn't cover up the Tab with the galaxy pic. I would have the galaxy floating behind it.

$300 or less isn't inexpensive?

Yeah I know it's shit. The funny thing is that where I'm from I could make good money on this flyer as it would be seen as "above average".

if this was

a) cheap
b) available wi-fi only
c) available in japan (not likely, it's korean)

i'd be thinking about this just as a nice way of checking out android. doesn't look likely, which is probably for the best, but i'm sure something similar will come along later.

They don't sell Samsung stuff in Korea? (I have no idea about anything Japan/Korea).

You guys may know I'm constantly the Android software/hardware/customizations thread, so you know I'm a big fan of android. However, this just doesn't convince me for some reason. Must be that I cannot get the idea of a use for a keyboard less tablet to begin with.

As in, I honestly can't see a reason to own a tablet apart from use on the toilet. Don't get me wrong. I WANT a tablet. More than any of you can imagine, but I can't find a proper use to validate it's purchase. :(

they sell samsung in korea since it's korean :lol :lol
But in Japan, korean electronics usually sell like shit because the market is ridiculously hard to penetrate with sony, panasonic, sharp and whatnot.

I'm going to buy a tablet as soon as something good comes up. Almost got iPad already, but they don't sell it officially in Finland yet. Galaxy Tab looked like a good option, but if the rumored ~1000€ price is true there's no way I'll buy it. That's just insane. Those new price rumors sound a lot better.

For me tablet would be perfect for sofa surfing, checking e-mails, pictures, maybe some video when traveling. We have a laptop, but its too big, slow and awkward. Also fast startup is a big plus.

Oops, typo--I meant Japan.
The market is really saturated in China with all those brands plus Haier and all the Chinese brands, but they still have Samsung and LG stuff.

it is basically impossible to find a samsung TV or netbook in major electronics stores here (bic, yodobashi etc). a lot of japanese people seriously believe they will blow up if they're made in taiwan by a korean company as opposed to being made in taiwan by a japanese company.

Wasn't that 300 in Euros? Anyways yeah that's relatively cheap, but people just don't want the contract for the 3g.

This is like saying what's the point of computing on a 4" screen ten years ago. There are significant advantages to using a tablet over anything else. It's one of those "you have to own one first than you'll realize" things. Imagine if 7" - 8" netbooks came out prior to 13"-17" laptops for a comparison. Both have a purpose.

Japanese electronics industry = American film industry.

The only foreign company that has had success there is Apple. There products there are more or less as popular in Japan as they are in America.

It's dollars, but that's with it being subsidized. I guess I overlooked that in Charred Greyface's quote. My apologies to everyone.

If it has MLB.tv (with live video, unlike the Android phone app currently) I will definitely drop $300 on one. Looks pretty bad ass for that price.

Rogers is apparently going to carry this tab, and with the delay of the captivate I have got to wondering: is it possible (are there mics and speakers) to use this tab as a phone? I'm a pretty huge guy so i don't think 7" would be grotesquely large.

Edit: ohhh, apparently you can make calls via Bluetooth on the non us versions. I wonder if the Rogers version will be "non us".

I've never understood something. How doe the Galaxy Tab have that for a resolution?

My understanding was you couldn't get higher than the 8XX x 6XX resolution under Android at the current time, and that's one of the big bullet points for Gingerbread that it'll raise the resolution cap to 1280x760?

Engadget Article on Gingerbread!

"There's said to be a new 1280 x 760 resolution available for devices larger than 4 inches, which would dovetail nicely with Verizon's desire to bring a bunch of Android tablets to market."

So how is the Galaxy Tab doing this while running 2.2?

Gameloft already releasing games for the Tab

http://www.pocketgamer.biz/r/PG.Biz/Gameloft+news/news.asp?c=24334

Another platform/another device to support is just what indie developers don't want to hear, but the big publishers say Bring it on. Got any more?

Certainly that's the mood of French outfit Gameloft, which has just released a video of featuring three of its key titles running on Samsung's Android tablet, the Galaxy Tab.

These are racer Asphalt 5, first person shooter N.O.V.A. and cartoon sports game Let's Golf.

However, Gameloft being Gameloft, it's also trailed the launch of four more of its iOS brands on Galaxy Tab. These are Modern Combat: Sandstorm, Gangstar: West Coast Hustle, Hero of Sparta and Dungeon Hunter.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab is already out in Germany, and out in the UK on November 1 and November 15 in the US.

The Galaxy Tab will the template not to follow for Android tablet makers. Nice piece of technology but you can't release at that price point. Thankfully, it looks like a lot of the upcoming tabs will be all over the price spectrum, from $200-800 depending on what people want to use it for.

The $900 price point is fake (that story's a couple months old). It looks like it'll be around $400 w/ contract

I'm a huge Android fan.. And I know that's the reported price with a contract, but that is just too much when you're locked into a 2 year deal. Especially seeing how at least some of the providers are charging much more for data plans for these tablets than for a smartphone. $400 with a contract is still way too much.

649 without contract. Which is comparable to the iPad with 3g, I believe.

I still wouldn't get it. I wouldn't pay more than $500 for a tablet.

They're both too high for me.. :lol $400 without a contract is probably the sweet spot. And they'll get there in time once technology ramps up. Anyway, I'm sure this will be a great device and I'm sure some people will love it. It's just too much for me.

Now that I think about it, that's probably true for me as well. $400 is probably my price as well. I just don't feel like I would use a tablet enough to justify $500.

I'm absolutely in love with my Droid X, couldn't be happier. Just joined the Android camp a few weeks ago.

But. Froyo on a 7" tablet, priced HIGHER than the uber popular iPad is such a joke.

I guess Apple has the industry by its balls. Steve just mentioned in their earnings call that the ipad is priced more aggressively than a typical Apple product.

Verizon's (and by extension Samsung's) pricing extends me great lulz. I'm in the market for a tablet by Q1 2011, so at this point it looks to be an iPad 2 until Google gives more info on gingerbread's tablet functionality.

Better than those 800 dollar rumors but still not exactly competitive.

wake me when those fabled "200 dollar Android tablets" start showing up at the same level of quality as the Tab.

Uhh, that'll never happen. A $200 tablet is going to be bare bones. Slower processor, lesser RAM, etc.

Just read about the Verizon $600 price. Wow, that thing is going to be DOA.

Tablets interest me and I was really hoping this Galaxy tab could be a nice little xmas present for myself, but fffffffuuuuuu that, way too high. I need it around $400 at least.

:(

I still have faith that a $400, wifi only, non contract version will come out.

BELIEVE!

Uh don't forget that the Galaxy Tab on sale is the 3G version. So it's still cheaper than the comparable iPad (and with the WiFi version on the way). It's a good price for anyone interested specifically in an Android tablet, instead of an iOS tablet, but that's not a lot of people...

I've read enough blogs from Android evangelists or tablet experts here on gaf to know that there's a big enough chunk of people honestly expecting a 200 dollar tablet to emerge in the next year or two that will be viable competition to the iPad.

I think that's bullshit. i think 400 - 500 is the minimum price that will actually pack in the speed, screen and battery life to compete.

As for software, I have more faith in Web OS getting ported over than Android 3.0 getting put to good use.

it's only 30 bucks cheaper than a 3G, 16GB ipad and has around half the screen real estate.

Verizon Galaxy Tab coming Nov. 11, will sell for $599.99, $20 for 1GB of data
Posted on Wednesday, Oct 20, 2010 by Phil Nickinson

Verizon Samsung Galaxy Tab

You read right, folks. The Verizon Samsung Galaxy Tab (watch our hands-on here) apparently is going to sell unsubsidized for $599, and it'll be available Nov. 11. A data plan will run you $20 for 1GB. And with all that jing you get a 7-inch Android 2.2 tablet with a 1 GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor and all the bells and whistles. Preloaded apps include Verizon's VCAST suite, Slacker Radio, Kindle, Blockbuster and Let's Golf.

So at $600 -- but no messy contract -- are you more or less apt to pic this up? Full presser after the break.
