Santa Monica Working on New God of War

In God of War 1, Kratos is an actual anti-hero, a fallen man, filled with remorse for the deeds he has done and the monster he's become. Killing Ares is actually a redemption for him.

God of War 2 fucked up his character bad.

GoW2 pushed his character past the brink into a villain, which I found to be at least an interesting development.

God of War 3 was straight up character assassination. It was so insultingly filled with incongruence and shit writing (Pandora) that it actually keeps me from wanting to play that game, despite enjoying the gameplay and spectacle.

If you watch the bonus unlockable materials after you finish GoW1 (pretty rare for a PS2 game, I was very impressed at the time), interviews with Jaffe make it pretty clear that he meant for that character to be a representation of a side of himself.

That's really why I felt like Kratos should have been retired with Jaffe's departure.

Oh man, I loved those bonus materials, the "character graveyard" and videos and whatnot.

That was a long time ago though, I never knew that about Jaffe. I'd have to agree, then.

Hopefully they don't break double jump after the downloadable demo... again. That killed my enjoyment of 3. I went back to the E3 demo and double jump worked fine, but it was broken in the final game.

uhhh...why are people so pumped to play in another mythology and refuse to play in greek myth?

because the enemies and bosses will look differently?

they have already taken a lot of liberties with greek myth. if you are just looking for a different texture then just wait for the game to come out. unless of course you think a different mythology would bring so many new things to the franchise?

for me it's just going to be a set of new characters.

Out of curiosity would you be fine with a new character in the exact same setting and not fine with say, Kratos fighting Norse and Egyptian gods, or is this more about what Kratos being the star would most likely imply?
Good point. I just need s non-Greek/Roman mythology setting. If they want to use Kratos as he is a "mascot" then I think I would be fine with that.

It's been pretty disappointing watching both Jaffe and Barlogie drift endlessly from studio to studio since their departures from SM. The God of War games suffered from it, and the games they worked on seemed to have a mix of unfortunate issues and low-budget constraints. The result is that both directors have been on the fringe for a generation.

Because what's left there to mine? The last one was some sisters basically no one knew. He's killed everyone, the Greek myths are done.

NEXT GOD OF WAR OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED TO BE IN DEVELOPMENT

Sony's Santa Monica Studio is actively working on the next God of War title. While answering audience questions at a God of War retrospective at Sony's PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas, Santa Monica Studio's Creative Director Cory Barlog confirmed that development is in fact underway.

When asked for further details, he wouldn't say much, though he did assert that it was definitely not a prequel. It's possible this could be the "reboot" Sony's Scott Rohde alluded to after the round of layoffs Santa Monica Studio suffered earlier this year.

But don't expect to be vivisecting mythological creatures any time soon. Barlog said he hoped to share more within "the next year or two" when IGN spoke to him after the panel, which means development is most likely in its early stages. When asked whether it would star series protagonist Kratos, Barlog was unwilling to answer.

Yes people. They just need to make him a real hero this time, to make him redeem himself. By saving humanity from the chaos he unleashed.

It would have been cool to allow that studio to work on a new IP this generation. I personally feel that GoW needs a break.

EDIT: Unless its a new character and mythos, then that may be interesting..

Combination of the two plus a new setting

Take puzzles, combat system and multiplayer from Ascension + bosses, set pieces and story telling of the third + new setting = perfect

I hated the combat system in Ascension more GOW 3 combat for me. Multiplayer played too big a role design wise in single player. I definitely want more puzzles tho :)

They did allow it, and it was canceled.

Great. 2 plus years off.

Nice to have a confirmation. Expecting a march release like always would put it in 2016 at earliest. But if they really are just starting than probably march 2017.

Holiday 2016 I'm betting. GOW is one of my favorite franchises, all four SSM entries are awesome. Ascension could have been the best one had they focused on single player only. That is all I ask for them with this new one. Give us a meaty, 15 hour game this time and blow us away with spectacular tech, art direction, level design, and boss battles as always.

My hype for Kratos ran out after 3.

I bought it day one, I had waited for that game for months, completed it twice, got the platinum.

I'd like to see something new from Santa Monica.

I'm a little disappointed, to be completely honest.

I have very mixed feelings about that. I really, really liked the God of War Trilogy, but I think that great movies or (story-driven) games need an ending sometimes.
Doing a Prequel again would probably result in an unsatisfying story and doing a sequel, well I don't know how you could do a sequel after that ending in GOW3.
I would have loved a new SSM IP on PS4 instead of a 7th GOW, but I think I have to wait a (little) bit longer...
However if they are doing something like a reboot or have a different character then I am very very excited to see what they will do with that.

If Kratos is replaced with another protagonist because of GAF. I will fucking hate you all >_>

God of War is Greek mythology, God of War is Kratos. Its as simple as that really. Its not going to be Japanese or Norse myth. It would be fucking retarded if they go in that direction. If they make a new IP then sure, do another Mythology, But not the God of War IP.

Its like Uncharted without Drake. Mario without Mario, Halo without master chief.

What people are suggesting is that they keep the name so it retains the fanbase and potentially the style of the game (scale, fixed camera, ultraviolence). It breathes new life into an IP that could use it. I quite enjoyed the MP in Ascension, but it was a bit of a bomb and not enough. Some might want another game with Kratos, but what about three more games with Kratos? He is already approaching caricature levels with his dialogue and voice acting. Most of the Greek pantheon is dead. Who's next? Fucking Demeter?

E3 2015 first reveal I suppose

They did allow it, and it was canceled.

even though the IP was cancelled, this game gen has like 5 to 6 years maybe even more, God of War can be the staple title to help Santa Monica work with the PS4 first, then move on to a new IP with the next game and a proper grasp of the hardware

Same as ND with UC4
