They usually do it to fill time if a longer sketch that didn't work out in rehearsal is replaced by a shorter one. My younger days of seeing the Colon Blow commercial damn near every other week are a poignant example.

NEW YORK - Kristen Wiig's recurring character Gilly might not seem filled with holiday cheer, yet NBC is turning to her to host a "Saturday Night Live" Christmas special.

"SNL Presents: A Very Gilly Christmas" will air Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. The two-hour special, the first for "SNL" since 2002, will be led by Wiig's Gilly, an ever-smiling Annie-lookalike who delights in violent mischief.

The special will feature new sketches with Gilly and highlights of classic holiday "SNL" sketches.

They should just rename SNL to The Kristen Wiig Show and get it over with. I can't wait for her to leave the show.

I love Wiig and get enough enjoyment from Kristen Wiig Live, but Gilly's popularity really confounds me -- she's always one of the top searches on hulu, and I guess the sketch is okay the first time you watch it, but, wow. Wiig can do so much more than that hackneyed sketch.
