Say Hello to the the Apple iPad

SD slots? Or are you bound to pay them an arm and a leg for more storage if you want bigger?

And is there a microphone? A camera?
no sd slots

mic yes

camera no

I'm a huge Mac nut and have been for over 15 years and I don't see this replacing my current netbook at all.

One of the key things I would want this for is travel and that means Divx which means I would want more than the built in HDD space so some form out outside storage is a requirement. I'll wait on rev B to see what improves on it. I'm not going to be a guinea pig here.

Just had a quick flick through the gaurdians live blog of this thing. Looks a bit underwhelming to me. If I had unlimited funds, I might consider it just to mess about with.

It just seems like it's all style and little substance. Even the style is a bit wierd considering it makes you look like a tiny person with an iPod touch. :lol

Well if flash was included all those small games on the app store would struggle to sell

That's what they need to get all of those crappy apps off of the store. It would immediately weed out the creation of these "apps" if there was a free alternative available on the web that you could access from the device.

But I guess they like to brag about the sheer number of apps.

But the thing is being touted as a netbook killer....even by Jobs himself!? It NEEDS flash or the internet is pretty useless.

Well that's me disappointed! Really needed another 12 months R&D to make it stand out from the crowd.

But then they wouldn't sell millions of units before releasing a revision of what the product should have been initially... not smart business considering the clout they have in the industry :)

He can't be serious. I'd rather not browse the web than have to put up with the horribly inaccurate touchscreen typing on the iphone. No way this will compare to web browsing on a laptop.
Has it occurred to anyone that Apple, a company known for how much R&D they pour into ergonomics and how much emphasis they put on user friendliness might actually, oh, I dunno, have been working on this issue?

If you're expected to type on it, than I'm betting Apple has put a lot of time towards making that actually feasible.

As I said in the OT thread

The fucking AMIGA had multitasking in 1985, fuck seriously?

MAYBE, if you could use a mouse with that keyboard
MAYBE, if it wasn't $499 for the 16gb (which is a pitiful amount of storage these days)
MAYBE, if it has something as simple as a fucking camera

Jesus Apple, try a little less next time...

I thought the point of netbooks was that they were relatively inexpensive yet this thing, like all apple products, is too expensive to compete I'd of thought?

I get Apple's reasoning, their pride of the App Store and their hatred of Flash in general. But why would I want to use a gimped version of Safari over fully featured browsers found in every other laptop or netbook? Why should I have to downgrade my web experience?

this was blatantly made with a revision in mind. where's the video camera that every other netbook has to allow for web chat or video conferencing? to say the least..

either way, i'm sure there's definitely a market for one, and then there's the other market that will buy everything apple shits out regardless. mindless loyalty ftw!

when this gets the rest of the features it needs at a lower price I'd grab it. Currently, it's definitely neat, but a no-thx.

I like it, was thinking about getting an iPod touch for games and web browsing at my house, but I will probably get this instead.

edit- oh and video

So does the iPad. And iPhone. And iPod Touch. The fact that Apple doesn't allow developers to use it doesn't mean the hardware can't, and Apple themselves use it a lot in their apps. And while the Amiga had multitasking while in Workbench, most Amiga apps did take over the entire system.

Because of the Apple logo, hello?!

o.k. sorry let me rephrase "multitasking we were actually allowed to use...."

That's fucking huge. How are you meant to reach the top icons?

Unless there's an 'awesome' switch hidden somewhere, this is one of the most underwhelming products Apple has introduced in recent memory.

But I do recall how underwhelming iPod was initially as well in 2001, with its game boy like monochrome screen and larger (than solid state MP3) form factor.

I do still think this is Apple positioning itself as the kindle /notebook killer in 5 years time. with a potential crossover murder of any multimedia gaming handheld that may be planned.

Would be interesting to see how the game companies react to this.

No camera? Really? Oh well, looks like I'll skip this for the same reason I skipped the iTouch. Let me guess, there will be one added next year just to bone those early adopters.

What if this is an attempt to get out the first version and work out the kinks. The 1st generation of iPOD is horrible when compared to with what we got now. Sometimes you just need to get a product out there in order to improve it through use.

I've only heard rumors on Jobs health, whats the official story on him now?

I was recently following the Dudebro development, and all I could think after watching this keynote was "iPad: My Shit Is Fucked Up 'Cause I Got No Multitasking or Hardware Keyboard II"

They are leaving out simple things that almost all other netbooks have, like expandable storage and a camera. This is no early Ipod that was on par if not better to comparable mp3 players at the time.

I think the pricing and most things are done very well. Except the $130 for 3G. Crazy. Probably adds $5-8 of cost, and increases profit (chance at least) for partners. Should be subsidized. Pure profit addition. Maybe it's just to put up a fence.

Very curious about the "A4" processor specs, besides clock rate. Wonder what generational core from ARM it is, and the graphics tech gen/speed. Maybe they bought all the right companies, but I'm sure there are some issues with the chip.

I might buy version 2.0 with an OLED display (which will greatly improve battery and weight), a quicker processor, and a CAMERA.

iPass indeed.

edit: ERROR. The promotional video at apple is selling me. DAMNIT. I feel so cheap.

what does that even mean? iPad cant multitask... Of course hardware can... but you need to buy it in another software package.

You can write threaded apps, how do you think games work?

Congratulations for what is so far the silliest statement I have heard all year :lol

As a web developer all I can do is smh at a statement like this. If you really believe the internet is useless without flash I truly have to wonder if you even know if a site is using flash or if it's using code.

Okay, interesting video, but damn its made for the masses. Seriously, they're going like "you can touch stuff" and "it reorients based on how you turn it" like they're major innovations in the field. Its kind of funny to watch actually.
