Say Hello to the the Apple iPad

That's seriously disgusting.

Undoubtedly they will charge extra for these "addons" (which were actually considered features in the majority of devices in 2005!), but to have them designed like that so they not only stick out to ruin it.

Don't forget that they will also severely ruin the posture of your hands when holding it with the lousy 1 port USB adapter sticking out. Holding it vertically the adapter will be close to hitting you (especially with a USB stick plugged in) or holding it horizontally your hands will have to go around the USB adapter, making it very uneasy to hold. For christs sake, virtually every single device nowdays has built in USB ports. Every new TV has a USB port. Even recent fridges that have displays / screens built in has a USB port in it.
USB 2.0 was released in 2000, 10 years later, this "revolutionary device" doesn't even have it built in, it has an adapter for 1 port. What an absolute joke.

It's an(other) hommage to the Newton!

I seriously want to know what the hell Apple was thinking with this. Were they expecting everyone to just jump on board with their netbook "killer" that is twice the price with half the features? I don't see this taking off, yes there will be those who buy it because it is an Apple product, but I don't think the average consumer will jump on with a price that high for its features and with a good bit of negative press building around (the building negativity around this could easily be the death of the iPad).

I think the apple tablet rumors started long before they started development on this, either that or Apple needs to fire some people.

EDIT: But seriously, the best part of the iPad is reading other sites and seeing Apple fanboys freaking out and pitifully defending it, its sad and hilarious.

Common sense and Anandtech's article.

In other words, pure guesses based on nothing. Anandtech's article admits that it's all guesses, and he has no actual info or hints at all. Though he does say that it can't be just a CPU simlar to the iPhone with a faster clockspeed, because the speed increase seen in the videos was far, far more than 600Mhz (iPhone 3GS) to 1000Mhz (iPad) would account for. *AND* he says very specifically, based on the speed increase, "it may be Apple’s own out-of-order design."

In any case, my statement that started this whole discussion was that the iPad in the videos looked much faster than any Netbook I've seen. Whether that's due to the CPU being faster, or the OS not needing that second core much at all, or the OS not being designed for full desktops like Windows 7, doesn't really matter. It's the end results that matter.

No flash = no buy.

Sorry, but while it's acceptable to reach a website and be unable to view it on my phone while I'm out and about, it's not acceptable on a device that's supposed to be my web viewing device at at home. I was hoping to be able to use it to do all my webrowsing in bed, or on the couch, etc.

This. "The Web in your hands" or some such shit like that. My ass. If I can't pull up a youtube video and pass the slate around the living room to watch it, then they won't get a nickel from me.

Well, actually you *can* do that, as it has a YouTube app. And you can also now run youtube videos with HTML5 rather than flash.

Better get your nickel ready :P

I was mildly excited until the prices were announced, but it was to be expected. Having a quick device to pull out and browse the web without having to boot up a laptop or netbook would of been nice, especially since I don't have an iPhone or iPod Touch but for $500... pass.

Do you think we have good evidence that the processor is functioning that well? So far we have manufacturer videos that are obviously going to show the absolute best conditions possible. And possibly media who got to play with it today, but who also were doing it under the watchful eye of manufacturer representatives again under optimal conditions.

We don't have any idea how it performs until they mail final consumer quality products to reviewers who get to do everything they can to benchmark it. For example, I'm sure you can make a lot of netbooks go blisteringly fast if you delete all absolutely non-vital processes, etc.

Edit: Edited to make it less personally attacking and more inquiring.

If i can't get my international soccer games streams, then, no buy.

do you not understand what peiple mean when they type "fail"?

Those people are saying Apple fucked up in those areas. One of those quotes was actually referring to failure. One.

Sorry, not spending that much money on a "walled garden" product. The only reason why it doesn't support flash is that Apple wants to gimp the web browser, forcing users to buy and use app versions of websites.

This device is the AOL of mobile computing.

Too small to have the power of a notebook, too big to fit in my pocket. It just seems out of place too me IMO. A little over priced too, but it sure is pretty isn't it?

It seems like it's somewhere between a touch and a netbook. I'm not sure there is a market for that, frankly. Sure I love browsing the net on my netbook in the comfort of my bed or couch, but I also use it for spreadsheets and other less leisure more traditional of tasks. On the other hand, the touch already fulfills almost everything this thing does in a smaller package. I certainly wouldn't drag that thing to the bar to check my fantasy football stats on while I watch the games. Who knows though, Apple has a way of making things seem cool to the pulic and I'm sure the early adopters will rave over it.

Interesting point. I've never really thought about it like that before but it makes perfect sense.

Soon Apple will unveil a prostitution ring and call it iWhore =)

Seriously though, I just got an iPhone, maybe in a few years I'll get an iPad if I see the need.

Yeah, my essential problem too, along with not really having a need of a device of this form factor that isn't an e-reader.

I'm mildly interested, but I doubt I'll be getting one any time soon (if ever) because I'm a poor student. The pictures of him holding the actual device look really silly though, like a giant ipod touch.

If wireless internet was more accessible (which I'm hoping will be the case sooner rather than later) it would make much more sense. Seems like it could step in to replace the media and networking functions of a laptop as a more focused and more portable device, while laptops hang around as actual portable computers for handling work and more important things.

Interesting...not sure if want. I was really expecting something more than a basic Internet browser and multimedia player, but that seems to be all it is. And the odd emphasis on iWork; do they really think business or creative professionals are going to switch to iPad apps? If it can't run Photoshop I'm not sure what the point is.

The whole enclosed-system approach where you can't even download files like on a computer, organize them how you want and run them, annoys me. It makes sense for a phone but not something that's aiming to replace a netbook. I mean, if this thing has to be hooked up to an actual computer to put anything on it then all it's really good for is a mobile browser/media player.

No clue what "peiple" mean... but no matter what, he did say "no one" right so even one single person saying it's a fail makes his statement incorrect.

It's amazing that we see so much of this type of device in our sci-fi movies and games (Mass Effect 2 calls it the Datapad) but only now do we get a company trying to make that real. It's way overdue I think.

Remember back in the old days when a cool technology would come out, and then 4 years later they'd make a new version that was 1/4th the size and that would make it that much more awesome?

Yeah, I don't think it works in reverse. I don't need a giant iTouch.

How does the web even come alive without Flash? In a few years, maybe with HTML5, but right now, no.

I will wait for the next iteration when you build in File Browsing, iSight, and a better attempt at replacing Microsoft Office. Thanks.

Hello ginormous iPod touch.

I may get one after it's $200 cheaper, and if it comes out with a lot of educational apps (so I can take notes in class without the clacking of a physical keyboard).

But as far as this goes for gaming? LOL

We'll see.

fuck man, this seems awesome for watching videos while working out (yes i think the touch i have is too small for that)

i almost want it purely for that, but i dont think ill do it.

Not one of the posts you quoted is saying it will fail. One is hoping it will, and the others think it's shit.

Don't worry. Once the adrenaline passes he will come to understand. Sometimes you (or your adopted brand) have to create the delusion of being attacked in order to create a false sense of vindication after Apple sells ten million of these things.

I'm actually very surprized that he couldn't find a single person in nearly 600 posts who would be crazy enough to claim that the product wouldn't sell well.

Apple's right that netbooks suck but this is a Windows problem.

Install Moblin, problem solved (though admittedly it's still a pretty immature OS).

Why should they support a format that fucking sucks for the OS? Blame Adobe for their unoptimized flash for everything other than Windows.

Not that Apple is trying to be the good guy and trying to push HTML5 because it's just better. It's probably pure business. But damn, MAKE FLASH BETTER FOR OS X. :(

Regardless, I'm pretty excited for the iPad mainly for its potential. Remember when the iPhone came out and it DIDN'T have all the shit it has now? Although in two years, it COULD go nowhere. Only time will tell.

I'll wait for a revision, but it still excites me greatly.

I could see me using it round the house for web surfing, email and general messing about. Can't see me ever taking it out though. No doubt though that it will sell well, the new book store will appeal to alot of people.

um...
puts arm up slowly to ask question....

how do you hold it securely and use it at the same time????????

How exactly does this work?

I will probably get one to store my schoolbooks on, as most of them are available in(or convertable to) to pdf. Saves space. That, and the prospect of an iPad version of Fieldrunners.

You can't, that's why they're all sitting down when presenting the thing.

Tilt.

Don't ask about turbo and breaks (yeah right, breaks) which requires you to touch the screen at the same time as you tilt to steer. Grow a third arm maybe?

I am honestly surprised at all the people in this thread that actually support this.

They didn't even bother to include higher capacity hard drives. Which I'm sure they could've made.
