Scariest game of all time?

Amnesia. I've been absolutely terrified during some parts of that game. It's also a masterpiece, so you should be playing it.

Original Silent Hill

The game has a incredible knack for making your skin crawl. I beat it when it came out and i still vividly remember the enemies, locations and key moments. I cannot remember the last 20 triple A titles that ive played in the past 6 months.

Too few Condemned mentions. That was THE scariest game on consoles last gen. One of the only games I've ever played where you'd stay 10 minutes looking down a hallway trying to man up and go where you have to go. And the house level, where you have to follow a trail of words written on the wall- from the first word you can tell they don't lead anywhere you wanna go.

I don't get "scared" playing videogames, but I do find certain ones creepy and moody.

Silent Hills all make me feel like i'm in a bad dream.

Dead Space 1 is the only game this gen to make me feel anxious. The sound and the lighting all were pretty intense.

I take it back. I do get scared of one situation. Swimming in Farcry 3 was evil. (I'm afraid of deep water and sharks)

I can't say if it was the creepiest ever, but I remember coming home one night and my little brother looking REALLY shaken. Turns out he had been playing my Clive Barker's Undying, which had obviously left its traces^^

God, that game was awesome!

I dont know if i'd still feel the same same way now, but Doom 3 used to scare the shit out of me.

I recently finished the BFG edition on the 360 and my nerves would be shot to shit after a long session playing in a darkened room with the surround sound cranked up. Moved from that on to Dead Space 3 with a similar effect.

But this, this i still cant play again. 25 years later and i still cant play it

What is it? For fucks sake.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is the scariest game I have played.

I didn't find Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs as scary, but there was still some creepy sections. (Looking down at all the manpigs feasting at the tables. That part was so strange).

Outlast is probably the second scariest game I have played. But I only got around half way through before stopping. I guess I should finish it soon to see what the second half of the game is like.

I've yet to be scared by a video game, but not because I'm not easily scared. Eldritch/lovecraft horror does not affect me for some reason. Perhaps because I subconsciously know none of that will ever happen in real life.

My pick for "scariest" go to Phantasmagoria in any case. That scene where the fat woman was killed in particular.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

I would go as far to say that after Amnesia no game feels truly scary anymore, though some manage some nice jumps form time to time.

Deadspace is the same kind of scary as Doom 3. Lot's of jump scares but you've got the firepower to defend yourself. Still very scary games, but not scary like playing Condemned with surround sound.

hmmm..
...

Condemned
A scene go me more so than i was expecting.. I just set up my new 5.1 at the time. And when i got to an area. I hear in the back speakers. "I'm gunna kill you" in a soft voice behind me.
I didn't think i could get any whiter...

There's tons of other games that do amazing thrills, but yeah..
...

I had a very similar experience with Condemned as I had just got 5.1, too. Just walking around the environments was tense enough to make me jump when I accidentally kicked a bucket or other object on the floor. I'd really like a proper spiritual successor since they kind of ruined the world in the sequel.

I may pick it up for PC now and see if it's as scary as I remember.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent definitely. Although I found Silent Hill to be more psychologically disturbing, but the way Amnesia builds up was incredibly horrifying. All those later levels scared the shit out of me. Moreover, Amnesia's sound design is incredible for its gameplay and narrative.

So glad to see so many Fatal Frame 1 - 2 mentions, playing those without lights in the night was a awesome scary experience-

Amnesia had me jumping, but nothing surpasses AvP from back in the day and those facehuggers. Running around in a poorly lit area, and hearing the click of those feet. I still shudder when I think about it.

The worst, though, was when the clicking stopped. At that point if you weren't moving the right way, you were dead. And it was sudden.

I've watched all the best horror that cinema has to offer and not bat an eye-lid. But games actually really do scare me quite a bit. Not in a genuinely unbearable way but in a fun kind of way if you see what I mean. Can one even call that being scared?

While playing Dead Space 2 at one point I let out this genuine cry of terror. Even I was amazed at how deep and genuine that cry of terror was. It came from the heart. I think it was when those creatures that hunt in a pack and try and flank ran into the room. But at the same time I'm not genuinely scared because I know it's all a game and not real etc etc. I don't know what the word for that feeling is.

When I was a kid I was genuinely scared of horror flicks. That was quite different.

In the mid-2000s I saw that there was a Silent Hill movie coming out starring Sean Bean, who I thought was pretty cool. I'd never played the games but I'd heard tons about how they were so great, so I thought, hey, maybe now's the time to get into it.

Between classes one day I went into GameStop and bought used copies of Silent Hill 1-4 for about $50 total. I decided to fire up the first one and play for about an hour before my next class.

Despite that it was the middle of a bright, sunny day (although I did draw the shades to make it a little creepier--sun was just peeking through) the original, blocky PS1 Silent Hill scared the SHIT out of me with its atmosphere, and I was hooked.

Today, I'd probably say it's my favorite game of all time.

Silent hill 1 for me. It wasn't cheap scares it really messed with my head at times. I don't play scary games much so I'm not the best to ask. Alan wake had some eeriness that I haven't seen in games lately.

Amnesia, hands freaking down. I really had a difficult time playing that game.

Close second would have to go to silent hill. fucking sirens all going and shit, running down an alley, creepy abandon wheelchair...fuck that.

I'm pretty jaded and don't scare easy, but I love horror anyway. I'm always looking for the game, movie etc that actually scares me. Here are the three that have come the closest:

3. Amnesia: The Dark Descent
2. Fatal Frame
1. Eternal Darkness

I dunno about all time but Outlast is crazy scary. I don't like horror movies because the barely scare me, but games are a different story. I haven't gotten far on Outlast because I'm waiting on the OR, hopefully the game supports it, to play it.

Dark Souls / Demon's Souls are pretty effective horror games, especially when you find yourself in a new area with no idea what to expect and a bunch of souls in your pocket. I learned really fast to hang on to some homeward bones and ring of sacrifice for times like those.

Condemned: Criminal Origins. Some parts of that game (especially the high school and department store) scared the crap out of me.

Corpse Party was extremely chilling (great story / sound design) considering how primitive the visuals were.

man, OR+Outlast, you're setting yourself up for a disaster, a disaster in a shitting pants kind of way.

Someone needs to punch my brother in the face for letting me play Harvester when I was in 3rd grade. So many nightmares, man that game was messed up.

Clock Tower: The First Fear for SFC. It does suspense right by not giving you JUMPSCARES! every 5 minutes. It's a lot of quiet exploration and puzzle-solving, and you don't have too many weapons other than running and hiding. It works REALLY WELL.

I don´t play a lot of scary games, but *DEAD SPACE 2 SPOILER*
going back to the Ishimura in DS2
was almost too much for me.

I'm going to say Fatal Frame even though I haven't played it.

Out of everything I have played, Amnesia. I had to stop playing a few times.
