SCEE reportedly making PSN game called Ra.One

Searched. Lock if old.

Mumbai based Trine Studios is working in collab with SCE London for this game. Release date is September of this year.

Kotaku:
Luke Plunkett — A Sony development team in the UK is working on a game adaptation of upcoming Bollywood sci-fi flick Ra.One.

The film, which stars Shah Rukh Khan, will see its game appear on both PS2 and PS3, the latter as a downloadable PSN title.

Players can take control of Ra.One, the movie's hero, or G.One, who is...somebody else. It'll be out in September. You can see a trailer for the movie above.

We've asked Sony Europe (which manages the Indian market) for more information, and will update if we hear back.

Sony today announced a video game based on Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming superhero flick Ra.One. Developed by Trine Games in collaboration with Red Chillies and under the supervision of SCEE London, the game will be available in September on PS3 as a downloadable title via the Playstation Network, and PS2.

Speaking to IVG last week, Atindriya Bose, country manager of Sony Computer Entertainment India, had said that the game will act as a prequel to the film and that the story for the game has been written by Shah Rukh Khan, the film’s producer and star, himself.

Mumbai-based Trine Games has been a busy studio. Besides Ra.One, the Street Cricket Champions developer is also working on a cricket game for Playstation Move, which is scheduled for release around Diwali.

Sony have been giving India a lot of attention it seems.

Where was that Gif of that indian kid playing the 360 smiling like an idiot and thinking "WTF is this?"

I wonder how much PS2s get sold in that country alone

Sony's actually developed, and published a lot of Indian games over the years for better or for worse.

Surprised by the comments. Isn't Shah Rukh Khan the most popular actor there by a mile. Pretty sure anything he touches is a million seller by default.
He still got a share of flops, but the audience love him so he always bounces back.

Isn't he like 50 now too? That poster makes him look 20, bad photoshopping but still

Play as G-One, Shah Rukh Khan, on your PS3, in this exclusive downloadable game from PlayStation Network.

A prequel to the movie, RA.ONE: The Game introduces the key film characters and the various superpowers they have in the film. The game storyline has been developed by Shah Rukh Khan so that there is an intrinsic connection between the game and the movie.

The game provides an opportunity to the players to play as the key characters of the film: RA.ONE or G.One. Beyond these two characters, a few other key characters will also be included in the game. The film characters have been replicated closely for looks and animation and use the actual voice-overs from Shah Rukh Khan.

RA.ONE: The Game will be rolled out in the India market and other key markets towards the end of September 2011 to coincide with the actual film launch date. This will allow people to get an interactive sneak preview of the superpowers to expect and play in a complete sci-fi environment.

Under the guidance of the SCEE team in London and in close co-ordination with the Red Chillies team for film characterisations and VFX, the game is being developed locally in Mumbai by Trine. RA.ONE: The Game is loaded with intuitive action moves together with striking graphical representations. Gamers, for the first time in the history of Indian cinema, can play various action sequences from the movie in the game itself.

Featuring 6 unique characters and more than 20 game play environments from the RA.ONE Universe, the game boasts multi-player action levels, including a robust set of assorted game mode options, and allows gamers to participate in an infinite number of challenging matches.

I also see that Trine are making a cricket game for Move due to release around Diwali (October 26 apparently). It's a follow up to their October 2010 PS2 release "Street Cricket Champions"

Another Indian game developed in partnership with Sony was Gamashatra's "Cart Kings" recently released in April for PS2 and PSP. Gamashatra also developed "Desi Adda: Games of India" for PS2 and PSP, released October 2009. The first Indian PS2 game was "Hanuman: Boy Warrior" developed by Aurona and released March 2009.

Hanuman sold 95,000, with Desi Adda selling 80,000 on PS2. PS2 installed base is around 650,000 in India. I guess with low PS2 development costs, and low labour costs in India these sales numbers are enough to turn a profit. Plenty of Japanese games seem to on far less sales anyway.

I came across these whilst looking into Sony's current PS2 support. "SingStar Afrikaanse Treffers" seems to be the most recent PS2 release developed by Sony. SCEE released it in South Africa on March 31st. SCEA released "MLB 11: The Show" on March 8th. There doesn't seem to be any other Sony developed games for PS2 announced, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some more SingStar releases, and maybe "MLB 12: The Show" too.

Actually sounds pretty interesting!

A bit OT, but I would love a sci-fi game based on Hindu folklore, kind of like what Too Human did with Norse mythology.

Mecha Vishnu FTW

Dude, I would totally buy that.

Shah Rukh Khan is a pretty likable actor. I'm kinda curious about the movie itself. Being Indian myself, I guess I should watch it.

Q&A: Atindriya Bose, SCE India

A PlayStation game on a Bollywood film [Ra.One]. How exactly did you manage to get the investment approvals from your global bosses?
We keep taking feedback from our buyers, and last year we realised that Indian parents were most comfortable buying games that had Indian themes since they could relate to the titles. So, when we launched nine India-targeted titles like Hanuman, SingStar Bollywood, Kabaddi etc, and sold 425,000 units, we knew we were doing something right here. A year back, we were contacted by Shah Rukh Khan’s production house Red Chillies Entertainment and the actor volunteered to write the game script, dub for the game, and even oversaw the entire technical development. So, we invested $1 million to license the Ra.One IP and developed a thrilling game along with Trine Animation in India for our PS2 and PS3 consoles. The game will be priced starting at Rs 499 (PS2) and will be also launched in international markets for about Rs 2,499 on SCE’s online gaming network, PlayStation Network (PSN). We are targeting to sell about 100,000 Ra.One game units across, which should help us break even on our investments. Ra.One won’t be the only title that we will release this year for Indian gamers. There’s a street cricket game that we will release by the end of October for PS3. With Bollywood and cricket games in our portfolio, we can’t really go wrong.

With these new titles, will we see a fresh round of marketing blitz from Sony?
Yes, that’s only natural. We are putting nearly Rs 3 crore in the marketing and promotions of the Ra.One game, which includes offline promotions and TV advertisements. Over the coming weeks, you will see nearly 250 TV ad spots promoting the Ra.One game and we are also launching a gaming tournament around Ra.One that will be run across eight cities and almost 30 store points. The sheer involvement of Shah Rukh in the game has ensured that we have orders to ship 21,000 Ra.One game titles at the time of launch, which is a huge number for console games.

Thats a lot of effort by Sony for just 21,000 orders ??
3 crores is roughly $0.6 million

Saw the movie last week, not bad. Can't believe how busy the showing was for it and only about half were Asian. I think it did ok in the charts this week too.

I think Sony is not trying to win over international players rather it is just trying to gain a foothold in the emerging Indian Market.. and if it manages to sell over 100,000k it will consider it a success.. or if it manages to increase PS3 user base by 20 to 30 thousand. that will also be an achievement for Sony..

That's the reason they are doing this, actually. But majority of purchases will be on the PS2, not PS3. Considering the install base is 90k there for the PS3, the boost should be fairly small. Uncharted 3 and Blu-ray have a better chance of shifting more PS3s than this game.

I hear the population is kinda big.

As someone who lives in New Delhi because of work.... No, they dont.

Its hard to find new releases here for the PS3, I have to import them.

I really don't see many people buying games here, specially new ones. Most of the population here earn less than 300 monthly and 300 can be considered well paid.

You see more ps2 games than ps3.

The 360 here is almost none existent. And if you want to play online be prepared to have amazing lag because you have to play with ppl from japan or Europe.

That said... PC games are super cheap, even new ones. That is if you can find them.

LULWUT!! most new games if not all of them release day and date with their Euro counterparts. the rest of your post is a bigger joke, so i wont even bother.

Wait, so a game that is supposedly a rip off of "Infamous" (saw it in off topic somewhere) is being made by Sony?

My brain...

Sony India Should Focus more on PS3 then PS2 -_-

PS2 sells here but still

LOL wut ?

I had fully intended Ra.One to be the first Bollywood movie that I see in the cinema. I've never really seen a Bollywood film all the way through and even though Ra.One isn't really a 'traditional' Bollywood offering I wanted to expand my cinematic horizons.

Then I realised that it's running time is over two and a half hours and I was all like FUCK THAT....

Why did they greenlight this in the first place...?

Ra.One is India's first real attempt at a 'Western' style event movie. IIRC they even have the first McDonald's Happy Meal toy tie-in with a Bollywood film.

They dont, I had to Import Dark Souls, Rock Band 3, Rock Band Beatles, Afrika, Bayonetta (I later saw this one being sold used on LandMark but I dont buy used).

Sony does release first party games day one, but finding 3th party can be difficult. I live in Delhi and I buy 2 to 5 games per month so yeah.

Oh please, dont tell me there is no lag? Even popular games like Black Ops have very few players from here.

Because India asked for it and because it was a cheap project.
