Scientists should figure out a way for humans to not need sleep

You could take three two hour naps each day spread out... I doubt scientifically anything could really be done to simulate the resting that is provided by sleep.

I get about 4.5-5.5 hours a night and I go to sleep with a heart full of bitterness every time nature forces my hand.

If I could never sleep again and remain in good vigor it wouldn't even be in question.

No thanks.

I'd much rather they find a way to give humans the ability to sleep whenever we want, for however long we want to.

Having no sleep would make the day too long.

I look forward to my face touching the cool side of my pillow. Its the best part of the day.

Not that this isn't a pleasant sensation in its own right... but it kinda speaks to the misery of modern stressful lives that zoning out for the day is considered the best part of the day by many.

I love drifting off to sleep, especially when I know I'm catching onto a dream. It's like tuning into the best television station ever only I'm the star and I have unlimited budget

We would hope that technology like that would be designed to make our lives more enjoyable by giving us more time outside of obligations. Unfortunately, that wouldn't be the case. During that extra time retail, manufacturing, financial, etc. Would need to continue functioning in order to keep up with new demand and maximize profits. Like others have said, it would just become the new norm. Besides maybe young kids and the extremely wealthy who don't have as many responsibilities, it would have a negative effect. By and large unless you passed laws to protect people from exploitation it would be extremely negative. And even if they did, you still have extra time with consumers who need to be serviced. It's not so simple unfortunately :/.

I would hope its at least satisfying to get it out of your system.

I poop 15-20 times a day when Im sick. The night shits are just regular shits.

I do agree that sleep has to be done away with. It's an evolutionary hold over that needs to be minimized. We do not need to be inactive for 8 hours a day in an unprotective stance. When gene therapy becomes real and legal, I hope this gets dealt with. Maybe 2 hours for actual sleep and 4 hours a day for rest. But 8 hours unconciouse seems like too long given where we need to go as a species.

Of course, being awake longer may lead to greater need to eat which then becomes a problem for the environment.

Maybe we need to sleep 20 hours a day and be awake for 4?

or they could just solve aging

Yep, and I suspect treating and slowing aging is much more obtainable than drastically altering the way short term metabolism works.

Besides, when you're young (or rather age-less) and fit, the ups and downs of everyday living are pleasurable. Eating, sleeping, fucking, shitting, exercising....it's about the journey mang.

Im sorry, but how does an additional 5-8 hours make you extremely rich?

Adding an additional 5-8 hours of part time or third shift work to my day certainly isn't going to do it.

Our body and mind love sleep, it doesn't have anything to do with stress. My cat surely isn't stressed and loooves to sleep...

Implying that sleep serves no purpose whatsoever.

Think about it.

What would you do with an extra 5-8 hours a day?

I would either be extremely rich or having the time of my life until dawn every day.

I love the feeling of sleep but god damn if it doesn't get in the way some times.

Think about the bigger picture too. How would it effect economics? government? culture?

I'd rather they figure out how to get us to stop aging first.

Priorities... things to fix first:

1. No more pooping (so gross)
2. Gluttony with no repercussions
3. Penis enlargement pills

How do you people enjoy sleep? It doesn't feel like anything. I mean I get lying down if you're tired, that feels nice, and can lead to sleep. But actual enjoying sleeping? You're not even aware of it. You just turn off, time passes, then you're back again.
What a waste of time that was.
I hate sleep. Biggest waste of time ever.

It doesn't feel good for you after a long sleep? Waking up feels good if you had a good sleep

You don't dream? I have pretty vivid dreams nightly.

Why Is Sleep Important?

Physical Health

Sleep plays an important role in your physical health. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.

Sleep deficiency also increases the risk of obesity. For example, one study of teenagers showed that with each hour of sleep lost, the odds of becoming obese went up. Sleep deficiency increases the risk of obesity in other age groups as well.

Sleep helps maintain a healthy balance of the hormones that make you feel hungry (ghrelin) or full (leptin). When you don't get enough sleep, your level of ghrelin goes up and your level of leptin goes down. This makes you feel hungrier than when you're well-rested.

Sleep also affects how your body reacts to insulin, the hormone that controls your blood glucose (sugar) level. Sleep deficiency results in a higher than normal blood sugar level, which may increase your risk for diabetes.

Sleep also supports healthy growth and development. Deep sleep triggers the body to release the hormone that promotes normal growth in children and teens. This hormone also boosts muscle mass and helps repair cells and tissues in children, teens, and adults. Sleep also plays a role in puberty and fertility.

Your immune system relies on sleep to stay healthy. This system defends your body against foreign or harmful substances. Ongoing sleep deficiency can change the way in which your immune system responds. For example, if you're sleep deficient, you may have trouble fighting common infections.

Scientists have yet to figure out why we even need sleep. Still a long way.

Well, there are a lot of guesses. Some believe it helps with memory consolidation. others restoration of function as well as tens of other hypotheses. There was a big paper recently that says sleep helps gets rids of waste products in the brain.

Either way, loss of sleep does lead to real world consequences, like stress, obesity, diabetes, and memory loss. So, I don't know if there will ever be a way to significantly shorten the amount of sleep needed. Even if a miracle pill was made, the chronic dosage would drive people to bankruptcy.

They should also find a way so we don't need to crap, imagine all that time wasted on the bowl you could save.

99% of gaffers would not like this. We already had this poll and most GAFers prefer taking shits. They also rather lose both legs than 1 arm and males prefer to piss while sitting down.

No no no. First, we perfect the reverse microwave to make things cold in seconds (getting closer).

Then we cure cancer. Then HIV/AIDS. Then find ways to create sustainable food for the world's growing population.

Then stop aging. Then master space travel and colonizing planets for our use.

And then maybe we can figure out how to stop sleeping. But by then we'll likely be so freaking bored.
