Scientists should figure out a way for humans to not need sleep

I once did the Uberman sleeping schedule (probably the closest a human being can come to not sleeping) for roughly a week and the most difficult part of it, by far, was the psychological aspect of not having a full stop on your day. Of not having that cycle. That's the thing that would be difficult to account for.

Capitalists would force us to work 16 hours per day and say it's absolutely necessary for the economy to function properly, just as they do now with 8.

But assuming that wouldn't happen, yes I would definitely love to not have to sleep.

Uhh, how about a compromise? We reduce sleep time to an hour or two a day. Get way more time to do things, not have to worry if you're busy so long you didn't get enough time for a good sleep, and still get the pleasure of going to sleep.

I got to imagine sleep is like a defrag for the brain. You can actually train yourself to go into a soft mode where you rest without going into REM sleep for 2 hours a day and be perfectly functional however if you try to go for extended periods of time (days to weeks) without sleep, studies have shown you start to have hallucinations. I wonder if the cause is just the brain not having enough time to sort out the information not coming or if short term memory is a finite thing. Like if we only had cache memory and no actual storage; any cache miss would be reading nothing and a cache hit would mean you're reading something you've already read before (assuming in this model that writes are cache backed as well... herp derp).

I'd rather sleep than not. It feels good, it's good for your body and creativity (dreams yo). There isn't really much advantage for the extra hours you would be awake that you couldn't accomplish with proper time management.

I don't sleep. I hate those little slices of death.

It's funny because I've just recently read an article from a guy that worked on first Warcraft. He was talking about crunch time and sleep deprivation and how it leads to depression - when your brain starts to malfunction, not just you feeling sad - and to memory loss.

I dont care about economics, government and culture they all can fuck off at the end of a long day. I dont want to exchange my sleep/rest time for more workhours >:|

The have something for that. It's called cocaine and ITS FUCKING AMAZING IM STILL AWAKE WHAT IS HAPPENING GIVE ME MORE VODKA

And heart disease, kidney disease, larger propensity for obesity. Probably overloads your stress responses.

That doesn't sound fun at all.

This I can get behind. What I need is a 5-hour-long deep sleep. I would feel better than I do now.

Yeah, like others said, it just means more work hours eventually. Also, I'm not that into being out way late :/. Also I love my sleep. On the inside I'm still a child who doesn't want to work, love to sleep,...and just a bit paranoid of the dark. Fuck no sleep. Sleeping feels good!

I wouldn't mind having to have a little less sleep though.

i have used the drug Modafinil....it's an RC mostly made for airline pilots to cope with less sleep. i felt waaaay more cognatively aware when i was on it, and incredibly didn't really need sleep for a day with no crash after.

it made me feel a waay bigger cognative boost than adderall ever has, if i was still in school and needed to cram i would swear by it. but being an adult i really have no use for it in day to day life. it was a crazy thing to experience the time i did it, though. i wouldn't have believed such a drug existed without a huge crash at the end or feeling droopy the whole time.

edit: i don't recommend anyone take this or any other RC. i've taken a lot of them bc i'm a moron though.

Modafinil is not a research chemical. It is an FDA-approved prescription drug for treating sleep disorders. In fact, it has been approved for so long that it is no longer patent-protected in the United States.

I would love to not have to sleep. I hate sleeping, always have. I only need 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night, but it'd be good not to have to sleep at all.

WTF are you talking about, I love sleep. If anything, we should devise a way to have perfectly controllable dreams with ultra-realistic detail. You'd have your own holo-deck every night.

I remember some documentary from years ago where they were exploring different solutions to sleeping. One guy was taking this drug that would keep him perfectly awake, he would basically work throughout the night. I don't think he slept for long periods of time.

Do some people really sleep for like 6 hours or less?
Sounds like sleep deprivation to me

I slept for 2 and a half hours last night, 4 the night before
I hate sleeping

I also have a really hard time falling asleep so sometimes its not always my choice.

I have chronic insomnia, and have ever since I can remember remembering things. You don't want this. It's miserable most of the time.

Obviously I would spend that time over-analyzing texts I get from attractive females...

"Huh, it took her 4 minutes longer to respond to that one. She must have thought very deeply about that okay."
