Scott Steinberg salivating over PS2 owners

Another thing we tend to forget is that the PS2 userbase is not static. It is, on average, a few years older now than before. That can mean a lot of things, but it should certainly caution us against treating the "PS2 userbase" as some monolithic, predictable entity that will behave exactly the same as in the past.

You're wrond. Everyone who bought a PS2 is eternally bond to Sony brand and will never betray that company. Steinberg got that right. It's just a matter of time until every PS2 owner jumps on PS3.

Judging by relatively low current PS2 software sales (only 1 title in UK top 40 again this week for example), it looks like most of the PS2 userbase are just buying bargain bin titles, aren't playing anymore, or have already moved to another console.

the hardcore gamers left the PS2 after God of War 2 (i.e. myself). today the PS2 sells in europe only budget titles or the crappy casual titles by sony. that's it.

so according to his logic the PSone failed

SNES was the best selling console in the 16 bit era

so N64 would have been No.1 if they would have captured all the SNES playas

which did not happen

alas his logic failed

It's so hard to take Steinberg seriously, when he has quotes like this from his past:

"The breathtaking speed and gameplay innovation that Sonic introduced in 1991 will reach new heights in Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic Rivals, and Sonic's new adventure for the Wii. These titles continue a super-Sonic legacy of ground-breaking gameplay and story elements that only next-gen consoles can deliver."

He's just a PR mouthpiece without an opinion of his own and I don't really think he understands or play games at all.

The PS2 wasn't the pocket rocket out the starting blocks either, as someone else has already said the Wii's Sales are UNPRECEDENTED.
This is a Wii-centered image, but
400

A lot of systems show similar shipment numbers in the first year for various reasons. Usually it's that even those high in demand like PS2 just didn't have the production rates to keep up, or even launch worldwide for the better part of a year. However, by 1.5 years in PS2 was well ahead of anything before, and its lead grew.

Heh, yeah.

On an old 1UP Yours, he was a piece of delusional work when Luke was grilling him pertaining Sega's business decisions regarding/ favoring the PS3 due to past brand loyalty/market power.

The interesting bit just wasn't his/Sega's unflappable support of the PS3, or brand loyalty etc, but this interview happened a few weeks? after E3 '06, aka the PS3's $600 price point unveiling.

You just need to know how to interpret such things.

Ground-breaking gameplay = sometimes you inexplicably fall straight through the floor.

100% accurate.
