Screenshots from old games that still look great

Ya that water reflection alone is insane. No idea how the hell they managed to pull that game off.

As it has been shown, 2D games have the potential to be timeless, specially if played on a proper CRT setup. Some examples off from the top of my head.

Last Blade 2 (NeoGeo, 1998).

Kirby's Adventure (NES, 1993)

Still amazed that the NES could pull off graphics like this. The slowdown if more than three enemies were on screen was a little heinous, though.

Holy shit this screenshot looks like it's assets were re-used to make Eagle's Tower in LA. Mindblown.

Banjo-Kazooie was beautiful at its time of release. Tooie still holds up very well today (played recently). Google yields hardly any decent screenshots, though :(

Another World (1991):

Jesus that looks magnificent. Talk about holding up. There cannot be another game from 1991 that looks half that good. Never played it incidentally, anyway know the best way to get my hands on a playable version of this?

Shenmue blew my mind when I played in Dreamcast. To me, that was the biggest jump in graphics I can recall. From going to PS2 games to Shenmue was mind boggling.

GOG.com has it for cheap. http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/another_world_15th_anniversary_edition

But be prepared to hate yourself, this world, and everything physical and metaphysical that you could ever think to exist while playing it. Prepared to look into the pointlessness of your existence with lucid eyes and say back, "I'm not scared."

It's the most frustrating game I've ever played, and so not worth trying to beat no language can properly express my feelings on it.

edit: btw, most the 2d games people are posting have really bad art-direction.

Yeah, that looks really good. But I think it's actually from the Another World 15th Anniversary Edition remake, though. That can be bought at gog.com for about $10 I think.

There is a Hardcore Gaming 101 article that details the different versions up till the handhelds.

I like showing this one off from SMT3 due to the use of flat matte colors and shadow, which bridges the art direction and graphics engine brilliantly.
How do people not bother reading the OP?

That's from he recent remastering with redone backgrounds.

CHINNER FAIL

I agree 100%. Still the ultimate and most fully-realized cinematic game ever made.

Thus far, Another World and CBFD stand out the most. I would have posted Another World if it weren't already in here 'cause it's unreal how well it continues to hold up.

The whole game looked fantastic - the hub area was amazing. Also, the rave chapter still looks great today. I randomly played that chapter the other day and the light shows, the shadows, and, well, basically everything was outstanding... Not to mention the music of that chapter but that has nothing to do with this topic.

I couldn't find a picture or a good playthrough of the chapter but here's some cool dancing and drunk conker.

(not sure a youtube screenshot does it justice)

I forget exactly how the game works but it changes I promise.
Why are you even arguing it? You posted a screenshot of the PS2 version.. when was the last time you played Nights on Saturn?

No One Lives Forever, 2000, PC. Awesome, awesome, awesome game. Everytime I look back at this game, I weep for the state of FPS today.

Not sure if it counts since this appears to be rendered on a more modern PC, but:

Grim Fandango.

The art style is still beautiful.

This post wins the thread.

All the posts in here with emulator/upscaled/anti-aliased pictures are embarrassing. Bad enough some of you remember some of these games with rose-tinted glasses, but then you confirm your memories with super-clean shots straight from newer generation remakes or emulators.

As said before, Neo Geo always wins this thread. That old ass hardware was pumping out amazing stuff over 10 years after release!!

Other ones I didn't see, for the old timers, don't mind the emulator and revised pics! :P
