I really hope Sony bring it back someday ( using Starhawk/Warhawk Engine maybe?) there is still a huge fanbase for it.

Good to see the NOLF love and late 90's early 2000 PC rep'd in this thread

Man, ever since I switched to a Mac I've been trying to get my hands on the GOTY edition of NOLF, but I can't find it anywhere. Grrr. I so want to replay that game.

I still like the look of DOOM today and the class sprites look better than any attempts at using 3d models in the classic.

I am not sure if this screen is through scummvm or not.

Threads like this make me love the video game medium.

The amount of imagination, work hours, and talent that has gone into creating millions of backgrounds & sprites out there is staggering.

and this is for a medium that's only been around for 30 years...

It's like being there at the start of literature. Really amazing to live in these times.
Did Literature go through a phase where it was only about killing?

REmake is about 10 years old and those static shots still look hot.
I think I just had an "i feel old" moment and I'm usually immune ;) good job

Well technically not literature, but most early recordings of events seem to be focused on killing/hunting/wars/victories. Cavemen told of hunts, The Egyptians were fond of their battle reports being engraved on walls.

And, on topic, Pop'n Twinbee still looks gorgeous:

There was a sequel on the PS2, but having never owned a PS2, I can't say anything other than it exists. I actually came across a rather large community for it (holy shit the multiplayer) looking for some tips for running it smoothly on win7.

Would love a PC/PS3 followup. When Lair was first revealed, I hoped it was going to be a next gen this.
Surreal could have used it, after that mass layoff at WBIE

MegaRace 2, 1996 PC

I realize that the backgrounds are FMV, but to me, it was still an incredible-looking game at the time. It's not a static pre-rendered background like in FFVII or something, the objects in the backgrounds rotate as you pass them by. To this day, I'm not sure exactly how they achieved that.

For that matter, Rocket Coaster from Pioneer LaserActive, 1993. Same technique, but I dock it a few points because the cars are sprites and stick out too much, like a bad blue screen effect. Also, all the gameplay was time trials, you're not racing against any opponents. Nevertheless, nineteen-ninety-fucking-three.

Sorry, these are the best screen shots I could find. These two are better seen in motion anyway.

Haha, seriously.

I don't know what blows my mind more? That the Remake is almost ten years old or that the game still looks freaking gorgeous!

98 was such an awesome year for gaming :).

Revolt - 1999 (pc/etc)
No idea how it looked on consoles, but I always loved the childlike world of Revolt

The graphics (which I've already mentioned) as well as true - 3D RTS gameplay blew my mind like few games have 12 years ago.

TWELVE YEARS.

Is such a thing even possible.gif

Wow, you're absolutely right. Warcraft 2 still looks amazing - I love the animations.

I think Demon's Souls was inspired by this, actually... at least the fighting style.

What game is this?

And HOLY SHIT read the OP already.

edit: game is Blade of Darkness (PC, 199?), name was in the image link.

Was playing Silent Hill 1 the other day, and was impressed with the light effects, although pics can't make it justice, imo.

Or Severance: Blade of Darkness. Great game, the combat was phenomenally good.

This is on an emulator or ps2.

But yes, VS is gem. (What happend to you square? you used to be cool!)

The third screen yes but I had to post dat ass (it's not extremely high res either), the others I don't really think so, at least they have crappy enough quality. I mean, I could fire up an emulator with my copy and post some bullshots (it really looks mindblowing) but that's not fair.

SMH at all the people that can't read or are 15 yo.

Counter-Strike 1.6

EDIT:

Actually, let's go back to the source.

http://www.counterzone.com.br/imagens/half-life/half-life1/half-life12.jpg

I can't wait for Half-Life 3 to be formally announced
this upcoming March
so I can finally play through the original for the first time since receiving it for my 11th birthday in 1999.

Things I have learned from this thread: 1. a lot of people don't read the first post 2. Games featuring heavy sprite usage have aged MUCH better than those using polygons and textures.

My single contribution, pretty much my favorite setting / location in any videogame ever:

Chrono Trigger - 1995

It's amazing how immersive this part is. I'll never forget the first time I arrived there; I just put the controller down and let the music play for about five minutes.
