Dangerous Animals + Human Hubris = Comedy!

My condolences to the trainers family, but let's face it folks; they're called KILLER WHALES for a reason. :|

Not really actually. They aren't that dangerous in the wild.

They are extra cautious with tigers, and lions. But they let people come right up and kiss orcas. This I will never understand.
There's no recorded instance of a wild orca killing a person, and only a handful of people have ever been bitten (probably by mistake).

Captive orcas have killed a few people. Some were probably playfulness gone wrong (do they realize that you can't hold your breath as long as they can?), but many can be chalked up to a big animal in a small cage. If they're upset, they're big and stuck in a relatively small space with you.

Eat it! Gotta show the rest of the animals there exactly who is top of the food chain and who controls the fish.

I sort of knew the person who passed away. Worked there over the summer in the past. So sad. :(

Same here. Same circle of friends. Crazy thing is last week she was just telling another friend of mine how this whale has been acting up the past couple weeks. She said she thought it was sick.

From Twitter

JimNorton: BREAKING NEWS! Kirstie Alley denies rumors she was questioned and released in connection with the death of a trainer at Sea World.

Wow, sad for the trainers but with most everything of this nature that is a risk he took on willingly. Kind of like going to a baseball game and getting hit in the eye with a weiner.

I'm not surprised about a repeated killing from a killer whale.

However, I'm surprised I have never heard of a CNN affiliate outside of cable.

who would've thought an animal called KILLER whale, weighing in at several tonnes and being able to snap a great white shark in half would inadvertently kill a human after being stuck in a tank all its life.

may the trainer r.i.p but I am very surprised these things doesnt happen more often when it comes to captive animals people believe to have an innate behaviour pertaining towards being gentle...

Tilly the Man-slayer!! :lol

I guess this is what happens when animals want to retire... I mean they cant just quit... And then of course the trainers will say "IT WONT SURVIVE ON ITS OWN!" :lol

Elephants do this kind of stuff to right?

They shouldn't be fucking around with an animal like this anyway. It's sad that this trainer died, but really, if you're going to get in a tank with an 8 ton carnivore that's spent it's life in a bathtub, you can't blame anyone if something goes wrong.

Eh Killer whales are Apex predators just like lions and tigers so i wouldn't see why it would be much different on aggressiveness. I mean besides they don't walk on land its an obvious reason why there aren't more human attacks :P

Pretty stupid argument. Wolves are apex predators yet given the choice between walking in a wolf enclosure and a tiger/lion/leopard one, you'd have to be an idiot to choose the cat. Even if you regressed instances of attacks on numbers of encounters, you're going to find that killer whales are less likely for that kind of aggression towards humans even though they could easily pick us off anytime they wanted.

Until animals can talk and tell you what they're feeling all the time, I'm not sure why it would ever be surprising for someone to be atacked by any animal.

I've been attacked by a goose before and they aren't known to be man eaters. A KILLER whale attack should be less shocking even if it's not a normal occurrence.

Yep, some animals are prone to being hard to read and unpredictable. Make that animal a 30ft. hunk of muscle, and there are some huge risks. Those risks, however, have little to do with Orcas being more dangerous or more "killer" than any other large animal.

Yeah, they didn't eat the porpoise, they just flipped it into the air a few times and once it died they just left it floating on the surface.
Story here:

They are probably competitors for food. If Flipper was bigger, there would be some dead killer whales floating around.

Otherwise, if I were Flipper, I would get the hint and skeedaddle.

True. After the attempted goose hit on my life, I try not to trust any of them and just watch a lot of National Geographic.

who missed the 'killer' bit in 'killer whales'? These animals usually play with Great Whites and Blue Whales, so putting them into a bathtub isn't going to cut it.

Can anyone make a gif or video of that scene in The Angry Beavers episode "Moby Dopes" where the huge T-Rex swallows the orca whole?:lol

Its amazing how crazy animal lovers can be. That same whale has been involved in three different incidents leading to death. And the excuse always was always something silly like this "he doesn't necessarily realize his own strength". Whenever an animal kills a human, it must be put down.

Or.... maybe you shouldn't take a behemoth from the ocean and put it into a swimming pool where people in neoprene suits make it perform circus tricks for fat mid-western tourists?

However, if it really can't survive in the ocean at this point, I wonder if to it being killed would be preferable to living out its days in a Sea World swimming pool.

Not recommending this for all options, but what's wrong with just sticking it in the ocean?

I don't quite get the idea that killing a wild animal for doing what it does is the answer. It's like punishing it just for following instinct.

I get that if a lion walks into a village and starts treating it like a buffet because that is a defensive measure. I understand if it's a dog or domesticated animal. However, KEEPING a wild animal always has associated risks up to death. It was stupid for people to continue to use the whale in the act.

The better solution would be to make sure people aren't in the water with the thing.

This whale deserves to be punished - Lock him up, put him away for thirty years and throw away the key....oh wait...
