Second coming of Christ blasphemed by IGN (Uh Oh)

I don't see what the big deal with voice-acting is anyway. Sure, it's nice, but whenever I play a game with voice acting, I usually just read the subtitles that go along with it and press X to move on to the next dialogue. For RPGs anyway.

Anyway, the score is decent. Need to find a wii someday.

Fully orchestrated music in a quirky twist on an already quirky series won't do anything special for me. And from what I've seen, the graphics look great.

That said, 8.9 is an awesome score. Hell, I'd buy it if it got an 8.

A little offtopic, but then again, not so much:

No voice-acting, ok, we´re used to it when it comes to Nintendo-games...but...this is NextGen. MS- and Sony-games always have va, unless it´s totally un-fitting. We have a voice for Peach, Mario and Luigi. Voices for characters like Bowser and your random Toad wouldnt be difficult to find.
WHY not give a Mario-game voice acting?

Zelda? Ok, Link doesnt have a voice, and he is "your" character.
Samus? She´s always alone, so alright.
Mario? He has a very defined character, he has a voice, and he is Nintendo´s most popular franchise....no voice acting...WTH?!?
Take the voice acting we had in Sunshine and think about listening to it for 20 hours.

Yeah.

I'm sure if you're an RPG fan to begin with, a lot of text isn't gonna be a detriment to the enjoyment of the game (I doubt we're talking Xeno-series amount here). I don't think I have much to worry about. And yes, I'm looking forward to this more than Galaxy :P

We only need two review scores: buy or don't buy; thumbs up or thumbs down. SPM is a great game, according to IGN. 8.9 is a ridiculous score for any game, however.

Because Mario's voice is just plain annoying. When it's a simple "wha-haaa" or "here we go!" is, it's ok and his recognisable voice adds to his character, but imagine listening to his voice on and on. Must be horrible.

Too much text for kids?

I managed to survive a few Infocom text adventures in the early 80s. At least today's kids have pretty pictures and nice sounds to accompany all the big words.

Reading: It's too hard for kids.

I think full voice acting in a mario game would be hilarious if Mario and Luigi were limited to a few catch phrases like "it's a me!" and "Oh yeah! Luigi like-a-dat!"

Wow. Starting shit in this thread will doom those who dont know what certain mods like to play.

Besides that, This game launches on the 9th here in the States, correct?

Sweet, sweet Mario lovin' for me. I will be picking up NSMB with this, and have an orgy of Marioness ALL DAY LONG.
When I pre-ordered my copy, the game store said it would ship on the 9th and likely be in on the 10th.

After Sunshine, I don't see why you are. As for the end of Thousand Year door...sure, it didn't end as quickly as the first one, but, it wasn't that bad at all.

Sunshine is considered a pretty average platformer. Thousand Year Door is beloved by fans. And yet, Sunshine was still infinitely more enjoyable than any moment in PM2. After playing Galaxy at E3, I have no reason to expect anything less than pure awesome. At GDC, I watched someone play SPM for a few minutes before trying to find something a wee bit more entertaining.

If I want a bad story, I can just play Hotel Dusk again. If I was just looking at the gameplay in both games it would be a lot closer. But SPM is going to weigh people down with a string of boring text while Galaxy lets people play and have fun. I don't think it's going to be much of a competition.

Complaining about the 3D "barrenness" is ridiculous, from what I understand of the play mechanic you can only be in 3d for a set time anyway, its obviously a design choice to do it that way, like you are "behind the scenes" of a standard 2d mario. Don't get it IGN ?

Fantavision, PS2: Buy
Zelda: Ocarina of Time, N64: Buy
Disaster Report, PS2: Buy
Final Fantasy 7: Buy

... You don't see how you might want a little more of a distinction than just "buy" or "don't buy"?

Not really, considering its the highest rated platformer from last generation. Only sad Nintendo haters consider Sunshine to be anything less than a good game.

Super Paper Mario overwhelms you with storyline and dialog text. The writing is amusing, though.
Crap, this is what kept me from finishing The Thousand Year Door. Tons of text about a story i really don't care about. :(

Good game. Not great, though. It's BARELY better than SPM.

I do the same, but my problem is when all the dialogue is in little one-line bits that I have to keep mashing the button to get through (and this is assuming the game allows for instant text showing; I have bad, bad memories of paying Tingle to translate maps for me). I understand the reasoning for the bits method when there's voice acting to go along with it, but if all I'm reading is text, then just give me the whole paragraph.
IGN360 overrates far less than the now legendary Xbox division.
More like the legendary Dreamcast division who went on to be the Xbox division.

His voice acting in Mario and Luigi Partners in Time is perfect..

That's the stuff we need for future Mario games :)

I agree. I love the way Mario and Luigi 'talk' in those games -- it's very charming.

Yeah.

I remember that voice-acting, and it fit perfectly.
People here complain about the first 20 minutes being a ton of boring text that they skipped. Imo it could be so lovely, if Mario and Co. did speak.

Could IGN post some MORE spoilers to funny plot stuff please. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
This scène has been used in multiple trailers from this game, so IGN hardly considers this a spoiler anymore.

I love it when people who haven't even played a game sit here and discredit the industry journalists who HAVE ACTUALLY PLAYED IT AT LENGTH. Absolutely retarded.

Even without having played it he makes a valid argument. I'm sure the development team didn't exactly strive to incorporate lush, detailed backgrounds during the 3D segments. In fact every screenshot we've gotten of both segments of the game has pointed toward this. It's purely an artistic choice.

Can we please get rid of these bullshit 8.9 reviews?

If it's not an average, you're just trying to annoy people by actually deciding on the number 8.9 instead of a 9.0. Just stupid.

The EGM scale is still the best in game reviews.

That's what the review text is for. If you need more context, read the review. A decimal-point scoring system for something as imprecise as a game reviews, however, is sort of like scoring a game of Go Fish with a slide rule.

I'd rather read than have voice overs. I read pretty quickly, though.

I also cannot imagine Bowser's voice.

Ditto... did everyone forget the voice overs in Super Mario Shitshine?

I totally agree. I hate it when games are rated "8.9" or "7.1" It's stupid, just round it to the nearest number.

I've played it myself for about 10 minutes and watched others play it for about 30 minutes, the gameplay videos you've seen on the net, I've seen in person, I understand how it works dude.
Thats why I still think its a design choice not necessarily the designers being lazy or whatever IGN seems to think is the problem with the 3d.
The game is gorgeous BTW the art "fits" really well with the capabilities of the Wii (GCN).

I'd be happy if they just used the old Bowser voice from the SMB Super Show. Perfect, I thought. As far as Mario and Luigi, they could use Martinet for the woo-hoo's, etc. and then use the super show voices as their "talkie" voices. They were appropriate and would not grate the nerves as Martinet would if he had extensive dialog.

OT but WTF is this from?

The gif is from Silent Hill: The Movie.

As for 8.9, it's ridiculous, yes, but it also creates the idea that a game doesn't quite merit a 9, but is very close. People are going to look at it as a 9 regardless, and an 8.9 is in now way a poor score for a game. Anything better than 8.5 is usually regarded as classic.

I think this is a pretty great score and review.

So now every game has to feature grand, fully-orchestrated soundtracks in order not to get docked points for sound? I thought that was only for zelda.
Scores don't start at 10 and then lose points. Giving SPM a 10 in sound would imply that it has the best sound of any game on the Wii. 7.5 means that it's good, just not great.

Whether that's right or not, well we'll just have to play the game. But your assumption is flawed.

The people who were spoiled by previous Nintendo platformers along with Rare's best consider this to be an average platformer. The game was definitely fun, but the main challenge stemmed from poor camera controls. Levels were built around this deficency, making the game harder than it should have been.

I was disapointed because I had spent the previous generation playing Mario and Banjo. These are far superior games. I still think Galaxy will be amazing, but to think Sunshine is a work of art is just silly. It's good, it's fun, but it's not the Mario every expects.
