What I don't get it, what scientific evidence was cited in defence of circumcision before that study came we out? Was there any?

If I understand the situation right, a few years ago every study said that the benefits of circumcision were utterly unclear. Now it's one study saying there are benefits - while the rest of the world still overwhelmingly says that the benefits are unclear.

Advocating optional genital surgery on your baby - with all the risks that entails - based on the assertions of one study against dozens - seems frighteningly misguided.

I am circumcised myself, and I'd rather not have been. I bear no ill will to my parents for that decision.

My criteria by which I would judge something like circumcision is not whether it changed them from their natural state permanently. A person's natural state is not perfect. To me, the fact that I am circumcised in just another property of my body that I did not get to choose. It is one of many.

The primary criteria I would use is if their change is likely to cause harm. Which, in the case of most circumcision is no.

This particular practice I would consider criminalizing, though. Performing a medical procedure in this manner is too dangerous. There's a reason real surgeons don't use their mouth.

But wouldn't it just make more sense for circumcision to be a procedure that only an informed adult can consent to being done upon themselves?

Wait until the child is eighteen, inform them of all the risks that non-essential surgery entails, and allow them to make an informed and considered choice - as an adult - regarding permanently surgically altering themselves.

That makes sense, right? Everyone who wants to get circumcised, gets circumcised. It would introduce the added benefit of preventing crimes like this happening, right?

Ahhhhhh no. I was circumcised when I was only a few days old. I'm sure it hurt, but frankly, I can't remember anything from when I was that young, so it doesn't matter to me one bit. I really don't get this anti-circumsicion stuff. Almost all of my friends, jewish or not, are circumcised, and none of them care at all about any ethical implications of cutting off piece a newborns dick. I would never be circumcised as an adult, however, because I would be aware of what was happening. I didn't give a shit as a baby.

I am Jewish (reform) and my nephew was circumcised last Sunday at his bris. The moel was an actual doctor and used hospital grade medical equipment at my sister's house. Before you jump to ANY conclusions about circumsision in general (and it as a Jewish ritual) please keep in mind the story posted in this thread is from the ULTRA ORTHODOX that are essentially living in the Stone Age. Do not associate these types of Jews with the vast majority that practice circumsisum --- it may as well be two different religions.
