SEGA 32X is 18 today, who owned one?

I never owned one back in the day, but I do own a tower of power now.

Question for any Canadians here. Does anyone remember a Consumers Distributing Catelog that had the 32X in it and had like an early bird price in it? I have a vivid memory of them getting an exclusive first batch of systems 3 months early and it cost $150-$200 more to get one from the first batch.

Anyone else remember this? Or am I crazy?

I had one, way back when, though the only game I recall having is the Doom 32x version.

I loved my Genesis and Sega CD so much that the wasted money on the 32x didn't bother me.

I had one. It was worth it for the great ports of Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter, and Afterburner. Shadow Squadron was really good and I enjoyed Knuckles Chaotix and Kolibri. Those 6 games made owning it worthwhile.

I borrowed one from a guy who was borrowing it from someone else. I only got to play Virtua Fighter and Doom, but as I love both of those games, I was pleased at the time. I'd still like to own one at some point, but people are nuts with their prices lately.

My brother had the full Genesis "tower". Virtua Fighter and Cosmic Carnage were pretty much the only 32x games we played.

Bought one for $149 (also bought the Saturn for $399...)

Loved Doom and Virtua Racing. Star Wars wasn't bad either, considering I'm not a fan of the movie.

We got one at Toys R Us when they were clearing them out. Our only mainstay at the time was the awesome Virtua Racing Deluxe, mostly because unlike with our Virtual Boy, a lot stores managed to get rid of their 32X libraries rather quickly IIRC.

As much as I loved anything I got from my parents, I woke up one morning to un wrap one of these one christmas morning. I really didn't know what to think... I remember me and my brother playin donkey kong country more than this thing that morning.

I still have mine all complete in box. I am still pissed about it because of how much my brother and I spent on it back when we didn't have a lot of money(only had paper routes) and really the only thing it was good for was being able to have a huge system when we had it plugged into the genesis and that connected to the Sega CD....the large version. I guess I did enjoy doom on it the few times I rented it.

32X was pretty facinating at the time it was launched.... couldn't beleive that the little addon could make the Genesis do some of the things the games pushed.

Also some of the CD 32X version of games like Night trap and way of the Warrior were WAY better than their vanilla Sega CD version the better resolution and more colors made a huge difference.

a few years back picked up quite few in an Ebay lot, 1 complete in box, and a bout 5 other ones loose....

The wires are worth more then the system IMO, especially if your looking to hook it up to a model 1

I never owned one back in the day, but picked one up a few years ago and found there's little to love, and the best games are pretty pricey. Kolibri, Blackthorne, WWF Arcade, Star Wars Arcade and Knuckles Chaotix are all great games though, so I'm glad I put the effort in to track them down for a reasonable price.

I had one of these bad boys - had it with Metalhead, Motocross Championship, Virtua Racing, Afterburner and Doom.

I loved the games I had for it, and even though it looked doofy as hell (and the Saturn came like, less than a year after it was released or something like that), I dug it.

I ended up trading it to some kid for a holofoil first-edition Charizard Pokemon card and a Game.com system on my school bus though, lol.

Ahhh, junior high.

Wanted one as a kid for Knuckles Chaotix but then lost interest when Saturn was announced. Even as a kid it seemed like a weird/bad idea.

Man, Sega really put their fans through the ringer

I had one.

Doom was an awful translation - but I was young, I didn't give a shit.

memories <3

I bought one used for Space Harrier and After Burner II specifically. Not perfect by any standard, but it was the closest you could get to the arcade until the Saturn ports came along. Installing the thing with those metal plates was so weird.

I still play mine. It's a treat to have at small gatherings/parties. Especially some of the really awful games when we're all wasted.

I remember picking one up on launch day with Star Wars Arcade and Virtua Racing Deluxe(which was mind blowing at the time)

This system had potential, but was mostly a turd out side of a few great games. Too bad Sega dropped the ball.

Me and I admit that I enjoyed my time with that system and games more than almost any other.

I unfortunately had one when it first came out. I owned Virtua Racing Deluxe, Knuckles Chaotix, Space Harrier, Metal Head, and Blackthorne. Knuckles Chaotix was probably the best game of the 5 games I had, but definitely not worth owning a 32X for nor did I like Chaotix that much besides it's soundtrack. I picked up a Sega CD for $20 at some point and I had way more fun with that add-on.

My brother and I picked one up when it dropped to $20. We got Cosmic Carnage, Doom, Metal Head, and Virtua Fighter for dirt cheap. I remember loving all four games as a kid.

I think it claimed to have an arcade perfect port of Mortal Kombat II. I don't remember, but it's one of the only games we owned for it. It was awesome.

I bought one used in 1996 for like $30 and most of the game library dirt cheap. Had some fun with it for a bit, but generally never really played it much after a month or two.

I had the CDX/32X combo and love how compact it all was. Actually the 32X looked pretty ugly hooked up to the (still!) sleek CDX.

Before that in 1995, I remember how even after the 32X was deemed a dismal failure, Sega still tried to hype-up Virtua Fighter on it. Pretty sure the Saturn was already out with VF by then, lol.

I think it claimed to have an arcade perfect port of Mortal Kombat II. I don't remember, but it's one of the only games we owned for it. It was awesome.

It wasn't arcade perfect- I recall it being the Genesis version, with less missing animation and all of the sound samples intact.

Got one the Christmas it came out with Star Wars Arcade and Doom, both of which I thought were awesome at the time. I eventually picked up Shadow Squadron for it (great game IMO) but lost all interest in the system once I found out it would only get a port of Virtua Fighter 1 and not 2.

32X version of Mortal Kombat 2 still sucks because of the horrible music and it still isn;t as colorful as the SNES version. Also SNES version of Doom still has all the levels and more of the enemys.

Bought it from Toys R Us for Star Wars and Virtua Racing Deluxe. I was SO CERTAIN Sega wouldn't release the Saturn so close to this peripheral. Yeah, I was wrong.

And Birbo is right: Shadow Squadron was really good.

I received a 32 X for x-mas one year guess there was some video cable needed to connect it to the tv that was not in the box so half the games I got with it did not display correctly on the tv.

When I finally got it to work the games were terrible.

Good times.

A long time ago, I was given a copy of Star Wars Arcade but did not own a 32X. After finding one clearanced for $25, I picked one up. Glad I did.

I own:

Knuckle's Chaotix (incredible music)
Kolibri
Metal Head
Motherbase Zaxxon 2000
NBA JAM T.E.
Shadow Squadron
Star Wars Arcade
Virtua Racing

Plus:
Supreme Warrior for 32X CD (crappy FMV game, but you can switch between English and Cantonese on the fly!)

My setup is this:

32X
Sega Genesis (Model 2)
Sega CD (Model 2)
Sega Remote Arcade System (Two official wireless six-button controllers.)
XMD-3 (Converts native RGB signal out of the genesis into a glorious S-Video signal.)

It's pretty much my favorite console.

I bought one, but in 2003 or so. Good times. Given that there are only 30-something games for it, I'm probably well on my way to a full collection. Shame about Web of Fire being expensive and not that great.

The 32x probably has the best version of NBA Jam TE.

i thought 32x was cool as fuck

but i never owned a genesis so i didn't care for it, but then i thought 3do was cool back in the days too because of super street fighter 2 turbo.

Back in the mid-90s, I borrowed one from a... I'm loathe to say "friend" (I think I annoyed his guts, actually - I was a bit of a brat as a prepubescent), but an acquaintance. All I could play was Virtua Racing and Knuckles Chaotix, and being a huge Sonic nut, the latter is what I went with. Still, it was that guy's 32X, and not mine, so it went back to him in the end. Can't say as I've had any huge desires to go back to the thing, either.

Always wanted to try Knuckles Chaotix (did that ever make any of the collections?) and the port of Star Wars Arcade. Were there any shmups on the 32X?
