SEGA 32X is 18 today, who owned one?

I won one in a competition. I remember the price for that thing in Australia was fucking retarded. I'm pretty sure they only officially released about 6 games for it here.

I also remember it being in the bargain bins about 6 months after its release... People still didn't buy it lol.

Star Wars arcade was the shit though.

I certainly didn't. Reading Gamefan looking at pics of Panzer Dragoon and other stuff on Saturn made me wonder why I should even care about the 32X. I knew better even at a young age.

my god. that looks like the sega genesis equivalent of an annabel chong video :(

I bought a 32X from a coworker yeas ago, it sits in my closet without a single play to this day. I'd love to load up virtua racing, star wars and zaxxon (all of which I got with it) but no cables/hookusp. someday.... maybe

(kinda wanna play all of those games!)

While we're talking about NBA Jam, I have one of the rare Genesis carts of the original game with Charles Barkley in the game. Is that worth anything?

Not really "shmups" at this point, but you do also have After Burner and Space Harrier as well.

On a side note, this console probably has the greatest percentage of flight sims of any other console's library.

I got it for Christmas with VF & Knuckles Chaotix, though I really don't remember playing them at all. I just remember wanting a Knuckles game really bad...

Also was it the 32X version of Doom that was unplayable unless you shrunk the game screen down to a tiny size? I know it was either 32X, Jaguar or 3D0.
No, 32X was the one with farts for instruments and the majority of Episode 3 missing. I think 3DO was the one that ran like shit.

Of course, the best way to play Doom these days is with a sourceport (PrBoom+/GLBoom+ for authenticity, ZDoom/GZDoom for the mods).

I have it. Some great games on it, but it never had a chance. If they had gotten behind it, I think it was powerful enough to hold its own for awhile.

Yup, got one for Christmas 95. Me and my brother honestly had no idea we were getting it until we accidentally discovered it a few weeks before Christmas. Bought a few games before it came out too in preparation. Chaotix, Doom and Virtua Fighter were all amazing to see at the time. Have a real fondess for the 32X, especially as I was a Mega Drive kid growing up.

Those metal plates were a real pain in the arse though. Was always hit and miss whether games would actually load or not.

I had one. I had Star Wars, Virtua Racer, the mech game whose name I can't recall though it was kind of awesome and Black Thorne.

Was a neat little bit of hardware, pity it died so quick.

I feel so dirty for getting that reference almost instantly.

I remember how much I wanted a 32x when I was younger and how quickly I changed my tune when my friends copy of MK2 32X didnt look any better than my SNES copy.

I had one. 'Twas the majestic turd crown on top of my Genesis/Sega CD sandwich.

Remember owning Doom, Virtua Racing, Metalhead and some Sonic game.

Ended up selling the whole abomination to get a PlayStation.

I had one but me and my dad could neither figure out how the metal prong set up was supposed to work after getting to work on Xmas day one time. I remember being constantly disappointed at 4 32x games I had that I could never play...

Actually surprised by the number of owners out there.

Still have mine. Most significant console fail of all time, including the Virtual Boy - and if you've beaten the virtual boy at failing, my god.

That said, Star Wars Arcade was a lovely coop experience. It was also the only game I had for the system, but it was a lovely coop experience.

The CD I kind of liked because of Sonic CD and some other games, but the 32x was utter shit. I bought it for a few tenners when stocks were cleared for the next-gen which I couldn't afford until a year or so later anyway.

It was a terrible add-on, should've never been released. This thing was from late 1994, and the Saturn would release in the summer of 1995. No one wanted it so far I was aware. Sega believed in the two pillar strategy I think.

You got me excited for a minute:

The 32X version was the one that ran fairly well with missing frames of animation.

And you know, crashed with C:\ prompt once you finished it:

I owned a 32X and was so disappointed with it I felt totally ripped off, I ended up selling my Genesis / 32x & SegaCD combo with all games because of it lol.

Thinking back now I must of really been upset with Sega because I Normally keep all of my consoles (Still have a 3DO & Dreamcast) and plus I never bought a Sega Saturn.

Never even seen one in real life let alone owned one. I had a sega cd and barely even knew anyone with a sega that even had that.

Oh god. I had an adventure with the metal prongs. The 32X manual said, "Use the prong if you do not have a Gen2 model of the Genesis."

I didn't have a Gen2 model. But...I didn't have a Gen1 either. I had that CDX thing that was a combined Genesis, Sega CD, and portable CD music player. As a very frustrated 10-year-old, I spent THREE WEEKS after Christmas trying to get the prongs to work with the CDX and the 32X since the manual said IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A GEN2 MODEL. I remember saying fuck it one day and seeing what would happen if I just plugged the shit up without the prongs.

It worked.

Turns out the manual was a poorly-worded piece of crap and didn't take into account the CDX. It should have said, "If you have a Gen1 model Genesis," not "If you do not have a Gen2 model Genesis."

Then of course I had to deal with the issue of the 32X being so heavy on the tiny CDX that it flipped the CDX in the air at a right angle. I ended up having to set a paperweight on it when I used it.

Awful, awful experience.

They planning on Spider-Man and Daytona USA for 32X which is why Daytona USA looked like crap on Saturn was cause it was basically meant for 32X. Daytona USA was basically a 32X game on Saturn.

I had one. What a piece of crap.
I want one. What a piece of crap.

I don't dislike at all the idea of addons, if they're made right. Addons are just that, to add extra functionalities to a device. Mega CD was a nice addon, with several interesting titles. It's true that it only sold a fraction of what the Mega Drive sold worldwide, but being an addon I don't think SEGA were expecting it to be as successful as a stantard 16bit machine like Mega Drive and SNES.

Now the 32x... what a piece of crap indeed. Totally missed the timing.

I had one. Got it for Christmas with doom and Star Wars, both of which owned my life, especially doom. Played that game so much I was hearing the monster sounds in my sleep.

I've owned a Master System, Genesis, Sega CD, Game Gear, Nomad, Saturn and a Dreamcast. But oddly I have never owned a 32x. I kinda want one now, just for the sake of completion.

I finally came across one and a copy of Knuckles Chaotix in 2002, I was 12 years old and as a massive Sonic fan was excited to play the game that starred Knuckles...

While the game was a disappointment, the soundtrack was good, and a few levels were pretty fun, and even if it didn't work out the idea of a Sonic co-op game was certainly an interesting idea on paper, too bad they couldn't really make it work. The game could've used more time in the oven so that way the 32X could have had its one default gem, like how everyone knows the best reason for owning a SEGA CD was and is Sonic CD.

A friend of mine got one at release and we clowned him non stop. He would shit game after shit game and literally try to convince himself they were good until our ruthless jokes became too much to bear.

I also kicked some guy's ass in high school because he said it was better than the SNES. I'm sorry but that kind of stupidity might have been contagious, I had to stamp it out in its infancy.

I remember borrowing the Star Wars flying game from my friend and found it was funner playing with two controllers. Dunno why I remember that. Would love to find a way to test that theory again. lol

I disagree with that statement.

I had one of these, only for a few days though ended up having to return it as it didn't seem to work very well with the Multi-Mega I had, had my first ever experience of Doom on it, aaaah the memories.

I own one but I got it at a garage sale a couple of years ago for a dollar complete in box. The box still had a 400 dollar price sticker on it. I feel bad for the people who bought it at that price.
