SEGA and IDW Publishing Dash Forward with Partnership Deal

Los Angeles, CA (July 21, 2017) — Today SEGA revealed that Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends have joined forces with IDW Publishing, the leading publisher of licensed comic books, to begin a thrilling new chapter in the Blue Blur’s adventures in 2018.

Creative teams are currently being formed, and a publishing plan is now underway with more details to come at a later date. Writers and artists will be bringing their considerable talents to the comic book world of Sonic.

“We’ve been speaking with beloved Sonic fan-favorite creators and new creators alike, and are excited to be able to spread specifics about our plans for the comic in the near future,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer.

“We are ecstatic about this partnership with IDW,” said Ivo Gerscovich, Chief Brand Officer for Sonic the Hedgehog. “We know they’ll serve as a good home for the new adventures of Sonic, his friends and foes.”

Hire the people who made the UK Sonic Comic back in the day. That shit was way better than anything that has come since.

Great news. IDW's work with Transformers is fantastic.

Ian Flynn NEEDS to stay. I checked back into the Sonic comics a few years ago and the series is 100% in the right hands under him. Keep Tyson Hesse too! Maybe get Mariel Cartwright for something every now and then.

Feels like a good time to streamline the book and focus on Sonic, the core SatAM heroes, and the beloved game characters. Thumbs up for Ian Flynn, the creaking and groaning of the Archie book might be put to final rest in this new direction.

Can't wait for the Sonic/Transformers/X-Files/TMNT/Ghostbusters/JEM crossover.

Looking forward to that Sonic and Blurr teamup.

The post-Worlds Collide refresh helped a ton with that, honestly. It also paved the way for TONS of characters from all over the series - the Game Gear games, Sonic the Fighters, Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic Unleashed especially - to be introduced in some great ways, particularly Honey and Breezie.

To be honest the Unleashed arc is kind of perfect, I wonder what Flynn could even do to top it. Besides making something that doesn't take 4 years or so to conclude, heh.

That's really great news! Hopefully they'll continue where the Archie series left off, especially since they were in the middle of three different arcs, but if not it's okay. It's just good to have a reliable publisher.

Nice. I wasn't a big fan of the comics, but I hope all of the staff of the former publisher find employment under IDW. I have no doubts that they'll be treated better there.

Interesting news.

Personally I want them to get as far as possible from the edge weirdness and focus on stuff closer to the games.... and by games I mean sonic mania not sonic forces =P

And a TMNT crossover please

IAN
FLYNN

also keep the Freedom Fighters around in some capacity

I hope the first thing happens, with someone else who writes general world building and lets Ian flynn write just character interactions because he sucks ass at writing a world, and the reboot proved the shit out of that

The Freedom FIghters is probably with cosmo and her plant folk in the basement though

They should wrap up the Archie continuity in like one or two issues, then make an entirely new one from scratch thereafter as the "official" launch.

I really hope the Freedom Fighters get to stick around in this. It'd be a shame to push them aside after so many years. Hopefully Ian is on board and gets to keep the reboot-universe intact.

It's amazing to me how much love they've been getting these last couple of days when I've frequently seen them dumped upon by Sonic fans for decades now.

If they give it the same treatment as TMNT and Transformers I'm in. I was pretty sure either IDW or Boom would end up with this so I'm not surprised.

All I ask is to keep Sally Acorn around. She was the perfect foil for Sonic's bullshit full of himself attitude and it balanced him enough to make stories fun.

If nothing else, Sega owns Sally because she's technically the squirrel from STH1:

Yeah, that's right, Sally originated in the games.

Sega owns all the US Freedom Fighters, the dodgy bit was how much input the Archie staff had into their revised designs. That's why they got more Sega-style designs with the comic reboot.

They also tried to rename Amy Rose in the original Sonic CD manual to Sally, which was a mess. (That's not even getting into "Sister Sonic" and the weird history with Popful Mail.)

It's kind of fascinating to me how Sally's design rather screams chipmunk despite the fact It's been confirmed several times she's a squirrel. Furry design, I suppose.

I think at one point in the comic she was officially half & half both of those. Which conflicts with how the comic has otherwise depicted the offspring of cross-species parents but eh, that's what happened.
