Sega Genesis S-video mod.

A few days ago I modded my model 1 genesis for S-video and it was one of the best things I've done for my retro collection.
I don't have access to a PVM or BVM so scart and RGB isn't something I really want to do.

It's so crisp, I can finally read the names clearly in streets of rage 2 and the text in Castle of Illusion is finally legible.

Only problem is that I've got noise in solid colors, which shouldn't really be happening, but I think its because I misplaced the EMI shield. Either that or the ground isn't very good. Either way I plan on fixing that later today or this weekend.

I'll get some pics if people care.

Picture of the mod. I'll add pics of the pixels after I get home.

Didn't the Genesis have those standard?

Can you link the instructions you followed? S-Video for Genesis sound divine, and I have a big enough cartridge collection for it to be worth it to me.

We just buy these in Australia personally.

All Sega need to do is release the megadrive again, make it look EXACTLY the same as it was. Add HDMI and wireless controllers. That's it. No need for these games built in ugly looking remake model shit.

Can do.
I used this board: https://console5.com/store/cxa1145-s-video-and-composite-video-mod-pcb.html
With this reference: https://console5.com/wiki/CXA1145#S-Video_.26_Composite_A.2FV_Circuit_.282SC945_Based.29
Basically match up the traces with the daughter board and solder on the parts that come with the board and its easy at that. The hardest part is getting solder to stick to the 5v transistor.

I had a composite video out and it was just too blurry compared to the s-video on my SNES and Dreamcast.

Oh no doubt there's some difference but just for those with out the technical know how or ability. I'm more interested in what type of screen you have these set up on? I've been looking at Sony trintons for my gaming room but finding an immaculate tube these days is exhausting.

I've got a JVC D-series. It's one of the better consumer CRTs.

Genesis is infamous for lousy composite, that's ALSO inconsistent between revisions.

RF was technically added later. It's not in the original Japanese Mega Drive.

If svideo is literally the best thing you can use it's worth it.

If you have any way of using component, RGB to component is the way to go.

I know it's not cheap, and the company is a pain in the ass, but the Mega SG is that. It's not like Sega is going to be sourcing 68000s again or something.

Don't limit yourself to Sony. The feverish demand for them is blown way out of proportion by people who've never tried anything else. Plenty of other brands make fantastic TV's.

Sure but this only cost me 15 bucks and a little bit of time.

My component slot is also being taken up by PS2 and OG Xbox.

Component switches are dirt cheap, though. You can get ones that have mechanical switching so that you don't need to give them a power source. But, y'know, whatever. I know the joys of modding stuff just because. I had an old scart to component switch that I used to use and I added some RCA audio jacks just because I didn't want to deal with a little extra cabling.

Great job OP, looks awesome!

have you done any other modd of retro consoles?

I always love seeing them classic machines getting some love ❤️

I bought this about 3 weeks ago, still waiting for them to ship it from china

so this finally came in the mail and works as advertised, games look beautiful and sharp on it

highly recommended, although its a bit difficult going through the loop holes to order one

Any man who shares my love of S-Video and JVC D Series televisions is a friend of mine. My favorite video input and favorite consumer CRT. Even moreso than Sony Trinitron

Much love 😘
