Sega's Steinberg Still Behind Wii

"SEGA has been behind the Wii since day one. At E3 2006, our booth was one of the only places you could play a Wii game other than at the Nintendo’s. We had playable versions of Super Monkey Ball and Sonic and the Secret Secret Rings up and running. We also just announced a historic partnership with Nintendo to create Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games – a title that SEGA and Nintendo are developing together exclusively for the Wii and DS. We currently have seven titles that we’ve announced for the Wii such as The Golden Compass, NiGHTS and Ghost Squad, and many more in development.

The Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 all have their own unique advantages. SEGA is excited to be publishing for all three consoles.”

Sega really need to tell their employees to shut up before they manage to create one mega successful game.

This is simply embarrassing.

i can't wait for the day when somebody high profile talks smack about wii and has way too much pride to retract so he gets (mysteriously) fired or "moves on to something different"

these duct tape and sega communication guys just won't do

Are you implying they do this?

lawl. Now THAT was a fast about face.

Anyways, Sega's relevant now, Nintendo am doomed, Sony saved, etc. etc.

I already stated my only concern in the previous thread. As long as disdain from a Sega of America exec doesn't affect the quality or funding of its games for the system (particularly NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams), I'm not worried. I'm just in it for the games.

EDIT: I doubt Nintendo had anything to do with this unless they called Sega bitching about the comments. I'm guessing Sega's higher-ups were more proactive and ordered Steinberg to "clarify" his comments.

I am surprised nobody has posted a gif from that scene in godfather 1 when the movie director wakes up and finds the head of his favorite horse on his bed.
GAF disappoints.

Imagine this.
And no floor.

His new statement wasn't as entertaining as I thought it'd be. Still... alright. He didn't really address what he said though. I wonder, what do these people think when they outright dismiss a console they're working on.

I didn't understand his 'clarification' at all. Not a very good clean up, imo.
:lol :lol

Win.

:lol :lol The funny is that the guy would have gotten away without doing that much damage control if he would have pointed out that this was his opinion, but he made it pretty clear he was speaking about on Sega's behalf.

If he doesn't have the balls to tell it like it is...fire his ass.

This is a perfect example of why SEGA is going downhill.

What he says is mostly true. The industry isn't taking the system seriously, which makes it even more strange that so many fights are started over it. Even when the controller shows a noticeable improvement in one genre or another no one seem serious about doing something about it and that's lame.

I'm very curious though. Steinberg made a very public statement to a news agency then had to retract 'most' of it the next day. I wonder who brought down the hammer on him.

Shadow the Hedgehog brought the hammer down, guns ablaze.

Man, the fanboy hate mail got to him that quickly? At least Hecker waited a day. This is a new record.

That said, I wonder about the prospects of other companies when it comes to the Wii at this point.

Do people really think it was fanboy hate? It hadn't even been twenty four hours.

He made statements representing a company that had several titles coming out this year for a system, telling people that it will be irrelevant in two years. Of course he's going to retract it, Sega's biggest titles this year are coming out for the Wii. Whether they'll be any good or not is up to debate, but they're certainly banking on them.

Sega's entire marketing philosophy has been to supply every system with games, perhaps unevenly, but they can't risk alienating one console by making statements against it. This goes for multi-platform developers talking badly about the 360 or the PS3, too, if that situation has ever come up.

But whatever. I guess people are going to use this to say "HAHA, THE FANBOYS GOT TO HIM" no matter what.

This is GAF, where fanboys laugh at fanboys.

C'mon, I think there are a lot more valid reasons why he might've retracted that comment. And to be honest, his comments the other day (um, yesterday) were kind of mind-boggling.

First Chris Hecker, now Steinberg. It's funny that every company fears about the consequences of being left out by Nintendo.
What's funny is that both of these comments come right on the heels of major Wii initiatives by these publishers. Chris Hecker's comments came one day after EA threw a huge GDC party to announce that they were fully behind Wii and debut Boogie. And Sega just got the Mario license.

Jason Biggs still behind the Wii too.

Ohhhhhh Riiiiiight like that ACTOR guy actually plays that. Hahahahahaha

I swear, I thought I heard Sega say the opposite of this just a day ago...

L-O-F-cking L! We need a Junkwaffle compilation I'd buy it! :)

Regardless of this blatant damge control. I still feel its bad news. Because his heart isn't behind the system. He is just saying something he is forced to say. In reality he isn't going to be putting his heart behind it.

SEGA, who really cares which system they support?

It's kinda ironic though that both this guy and EA ducktape dev. change their statements in just a few hours.

Steinberg is a marketing guy. Not exactly someone Nintendo needs to have behind them.
