I was just curious as to why those who like the show (or the comedian) happen to like it. This isn't meant to be a seinfeld-bashing thread, but I've been watching it with one of my roommates who loves it as of late, and I just can't get any humor out of it. A while ago, I thought that it may just be something that needed to grow on me but that doesn't seem to be the case now.

Not everyone finds the same things funny. And maybe you caught some of the later episodes, which weren’t very good.

By the way you were only three or four years old when the show hit the air. Wow, how time flies.

Some of the later episodes are good. Festivus was awesome, for example. As a gamer, I liked the Frogger one alot, too.

Yeah, I understand which is why I wanted to stress that this isn't meant to be a "Seinfeld Sucks!" thread. I was just wondering if there were any specifics as to why people seemed to find him funny in particular - I mean, the guy has a huge fanbase.

The sarcasm (Jerry) irony (George) and general goofiness (Kramer)

ah, cool. This is what I was looking for. Most big comedians seem to have a following for certain reasons:

Many people like Dane Cook because of his energetic personality, Jim Gaffighan for his everyday-Joe vibe blended with quirky anecdotes, etc. I was just curious as to what Seinfeld's appeal was.

Thanks.

His ability to point out the most mundane things in life and make them hilarious. Like the rules about parallel parking. Should you back in or drive in? Or general rules that everyone knows but never talks about. Like lasts night episode was about if you're in a relationship or not... How many times does she call? "Let me get to the point, are there any tampons in your house?"

It's the dialogue, particularly the delivery of it, that does it for me. George is the king of hilarity and delivering his lines perfectly. Heck, the apathetic attitude the characters sometimes have towards everything is perfect too.

The dialogue is amazing -- the precise wording is so carefully and immaculately chosen. I remember someone saying the same of Seinfeld's comedy in general... the punchline isn't what the whole thing is about -- his wording is so focused and precise, the journey toward the punchline is just as hilarious as the final payoff.

To be honest, I don't really like Jerry so much as the other 3 characters. I find Jerry to be quite whiney and i dunno, he's quite funny at times, but overall, i'm not too fond of him (though obviously since he writes for the show aswell, his comedy is no doubt brilliant; I just don't like his character as much).
The other 3 however; pure Gold. George and Krammer are just some of the best characters ever created in a sitcom and are just so damn funny. The shit that George goes through and Krammers stupid antics just make the show a joy to watch. Elaines character plays in with those two to add a touch of sanity....but the characters that are added for her environment are just classic in their own right; Peterman and Putty are hilarious. And talking about side characters, the show has a tonne of wonderfully created characters that are so different from each other and yet so fresh such as Newman, George's parents, Steinbrenner, Kruger, Mickey etc etc. too many to name.
I just love the show so much.

If you don't find George and/or Kramer funny, you have no soul.

George was ok but Kramer > All.
I thought the same the first couple years I was into the show, but George's loserdom beats all.

Jerry, George, and Elaine provide the sarcasm and irony, while Kramer is there for goofiness and slapstick, and you still have wildcards like Newman, Putty, Uncle Leo, etc.
It's a perfect combination.

Best show ever, indeed.

Both the early and late episodes were a bit weak, but to explain what Seinfeld did well would take a while, and I'm not really in the mood for major typing at the moment. The best and most clever thing about the show is how all the characters have real life quirks and traits and weaknesses. Self-centered, naive, sarcastic, bitter, desperate, lazy, horny and on down the line, and it's all made very funny. Not things you see often in a sitcom.

1) it's the idosyncracies of the characters themselves and how they play off of each other so well.

2) how everything comes whole circle per episode. example, george lies that he is a marine biologist to impress a girl. situation arises where george must act as a marine biologist to impress said girl. he saves whale. kramer plays golf on some beach. why was the whale in need of help? a golf ball was stuck in its spout.

3) they are very immoral, selfish, self serving, shallow people. every single one. and all of us are like them, to some degree.

So much for getting into heaven for me, then. :\
Don't worry, hell is filled with Everybody Loves Raymond, Becker, and Dharma & Greg fans. You'll be right at home. :D ;)

I don't really like any of those shows either, though. :\

Although I do find the first two more entertaining than Seinfeld.

don't hate me

You'll be in good company.

It's just the attention to detail. The little things. That's the real key to a great show. It lets the viewer feel more apart of it. If you're just presenting a show, then you're just presenting a show, the viewer isn't totally affected by it. But when you put little things in their, like real-life quirks or references, it gets the viewer involved, it gives them a sense of "Hey, they're dealing with something I know about it", it makes them feel apart of it. The shows storyline itsself on paper isn't too great. It's the spices thrown into the soup that give it the real flavor.

For example, Elaine and Jerry are talking. Elaine walks into the other room, the phone rings, Jerry picks it up. It's a telemarketer asking Jerry if he would like to try/order something. Jerry says "Yes" in a polite manner, then slams the phone down, then goes on talking to Elaine. Completely unrelated to the story, yet still one of he funniest things in the episode. Who hasn't been rude to a telemarketer? It just makes you connect with characters more.

For me, whether it's movies,TV, or music, what makes me connect and really love something, is that you can tell theyre having fun. They're not delivering their lines with monotone voices, basically phoning in their roles. They're really into it. You can see it when they raise their coffee cups to hide their laughter after a punchline, or when you see a sly smile slide across their face before they deliver a hilarious line. They love what they're doing, which makes it easier to love it as well.

Everything isn't for everybody. You probably just don't get Seinfeld. You may be just not be watching the right episodes (The ones on TBS right now are kind of the earlier episodes, like in the first 2 or 3 seasons, where the plot was kinda weak and Jerry's apartment was uglier. I think these are the worst of the bunch, but they're still occasionally funny nonetheless.) . Personally, Seinfeld is the greatest show ever created, bar none. It's got everything, and then some, and you don't feel left out, because every episode starts fresh, ansd there's rarely an episode related to the other, asides from boyfriends/girlfriends, or other recurring characters like co-workers, people in the apartment, etc. You can jump in and out any time. Yet, when you're in, you still feel connected, because of the little things, and because it's clear how much these people love what they're doing. If you just gave me every episode of Seinfeld to be only thing I could on TV watch for the rest of my life, I'd probably be fine with it. It's just that good to me.

Seinfeld is like Pepsi to me.

The perfect igredients, in the right quantities, mixed just right.

Its gold Jerry, gold!

I think I'd be fine with it as well. On any given day of the week, I watch zero hours of television.

If after watching some of the classics like the chinese restaurant eps, backwards episode, the Peterman reality tour eps, or the eps with the bizarros and you *still* don't think the show is genius... then you're hopeless and may as well stop watching.

Seinfeld started to get good at Season 4. Seasons 1-3 were annoyingly bland and boring. The last two seasons were pretty bad. You could tell the writers were running low on ideas and it was a good thing the show ended when it did.

1992-1996 or so is the prime Seinfeld years of watching. Even then, there are some bad ones in there but overall, they're the best years.

Seinfeld is amazing. Nearly every episode either gets me to laugh or chuckle.

I also have been watching reruns of Yes Dear! on Fox and likeing it...god help me

I actually really liked the last 2 seasons, after Larry David left. The show got a lot more wackier but I think that's where it needed to go. Episodes like Bizarro Jerry, Kramer does Karate with 8 year olds, Festivus, Kenny Rogers Roasters, The Cock fighting episode, The Van Buren boys, YADA YADA YADA, Serenity Now, etc. The last 2 seasons were actually my favorite seasons of the show. By the end Season 9 it did get kind of lame but I still think they could've gone on for 1 more good season after that.

the 'summer of george' episode with the woman who doesn't move her arms when she walks was probably the funniest episode of any show i've ever seen.

"my ARMS?"

My favorite episode is The Dealership where Jerry gets a new car. It has one of the best Seinfeld moments with the candy line-up.

"TWIIIXXXXXXX!"

Another favorite episode of is The Race. The end with the Superman music is great :)

High five!

Titleist? I think I love this show so much because I live George's life and my parents are exact duplicates of the Costanzas.
