Sell me on the Wii U

My plan is to pick one up when I can find it really heavily discounted, and just plow through what I like of the library. It's effectively a dead system, but it is also an interesting system, and I have a soft spot for doomed weirdo hardware.

I would have bought one by now for all that BC (I do not personally think the current Wii U lineup is worth it) but they need to get real digital account systems before I spend any money that way.

Plus I just really want to see what they do at E3.

People that dont want a wiiu....

...should not get a wiiu.

But please dont come to every Xenoblade thread to say "OMG FACEZ". Just because it isnt bannable (like it would be if it was a ps4 game) dosent mean its something you should do

Oh would it now?

One thing with Nintendo consoles is:

are you playing alone a lot, or are you usually having people with you..

If second, the Wii U is definitely for you..

I bought a Wii U at launch, but the system didn't really have much value for me until last year, specifically when Mario Kart 8 came out. It has only been getting better since, and I'm really happy to own one at this point.

For me personally, Mario Kart 8 and Bayonetta 2 are the two main reasons to own a Wii U at this point. Bayonetta 1 as well, if you haven't played that. It also has the best version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution - one of last-gen's greatest games - for those who don't game on PC. Obviously you don't see the appeal of Bayonetta 2, however, but I still think Wii U is a worthwhile purchase regardless.

There are some other games for people who own the system, but aren't necessarily system sellers (for me). That I've played, Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3 and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD all fall into this category, and are good buys if the system is already bought. It has some good download games too, and though many of them are multiplatform I think the GamePad adds a lot of value to the Wii U versions of those games for people in certain circumstances.

Plus with Splatoon and The Legend of Zelda on the horizon, to name just two, it won't simply be a system with games already released and nothing new to look forward to.

It's a good console. Maybe not a great primary system, but it compliments a PC, PS4 or Xbox One very well and deserves a space in anyone's entertainment centre.

It's always about the games.

All the rest isn't important really. You don't find most of the games on the Wii U interesting? Then don't buy it. Simple as that.

99percent of mu WiiU time right now is spent on smash With Friends.

Otherwise we all play PS4.

That said there is plenty of great stuff and WiiU can be grabbed for cheap.

Oh no another one of these threads. I'll just drop these here because I'm tired of trying to explain to people on why they should buy something that should have been a no brainer.

Quite of bit of outdated talking points there.

Honestly if you don't like SSB or Mario Kart or other Nintendo franchises a lot, or interested in Xenoblades when it comes out...meh might not be worth it. Was for me just for the Nintendo games, but certainly isn't a main system by any means.

It's not just outdated. Part is a flatout lie, i.e. "No DRM" and other parts are stupid "No known NSA association."

In fact the Wii U's DRM is arguably the most egregious and regressive this generation.

I just bought the 260 Deluxe with SMW3D and Nintendo Land and a pro controller off eBay.

Kids play the hell out of lego games but that's all there really is on the PS4 atm so maybe they will play more games on a Wii U.

Yeah more meant outdated in the sense of when XB1 was rumored or not going to do the used games thing ect, but yeah flat out false indeed. If anything that pic is a point against wii u since if that's what you have to use to sell then system, well.....

Really if you have to go on a forum to have people "sell" you a system you already have your answer that either it doesn't have the games you want yet or the price isn't right in both cases wait and see.

The Wii U is pretty clear on what it has. So if you haven't been sold by Nintendo's marketing then wait.

Xeno-GAF making me upset itt. I was doing so good keeping away from most X related stuff and those gifs are making it damn near impossible for me to keep it up any longer.

Fuck. :lol

It's been a little too long for my liking since the last GIF was posted.

I don't think it's up to us to convince people who aren't interested. Their loss, really.

1) Having backwards compatibility and that's it really.
2) No DRM - that's er...a funny thing to say regarding the Wii U
3) Free online - technically the other consoles do have free online too
4) Internet Connection is required for the mandatory 6GB update once you purchase the console. A lot of functions are missing without it.
5) Plays used games - Like the Xbox One and PS4 don't?
6) Support for indie devs - Howabout that Indiestation and ID@Xbox?
7) Great first party lineup - Isn't that just a default thing to say now about Nintendo consoles. It's not even a surprise that you'll get Smash, Mario Kart, Zelda, Metroid etc.
8) Off TV Play - Yeah that's pretty cool....and as a result many people don't want the Gamepad.
9) No known NSA association - Don't even know why that's on here. It's like having a picture of an Xbox One and one of the point being "Does working in conjunction with a factory know as Foxconn which has been known to cause suicides due to overworked employees *Nintendo stamp of approval*
10) Eh.

Good image though. But what would I know. I don't actually own a Wii U.

Such a good game it sold so badly. It's no surprise but yeah. Sad times.

X is the only reason I'm keeping the Wii U out by my TV. That game, man.

The original picture is way outdated and shouldn't have been used, but your points are also a bit weird. For example:

3) As far as I'm aware you need PS+/XBLIVE to play online games on other consoles, Wii U does need such a service to play online , therefore "free online" as in "free online gameplay."

4) You can actually update your Wii U without connecting to the internet, if you have a recent game it'll install the update you need to get your Wii U going from the disc.

6) Nintendo does have good indie support, with exclusives like Affordable Space Adventures which just released and that's not the only one. Other consoles have their indie support as well, but so does Wii U and therefore it's a selling point.

The first party games/off-TV points you just refuted with your personal opinion, because they are selling points and something that sets them apart from other consoles.

Also I don't get why you say you don't own a Wii U, but then you say you keep the Wii U by your TV for Xenoblade X...?

I bought the WiiU at launch and o this day I cant sell you on it. I was super hyped for it and bought it knowing id eventually get Smash Bros for it. Ironically i got Smash Bros for 3DS.

If anything id say wait for Xenoblade or Zelda if you like those. Maybe even SMTxFE if you like Persona

It's effectively a dead system.

I keep hearing this, and have been hearing it for a couple of years and it just isn't true. It has a slightly smaller install base than XB1, yeah, and has little 3rd party support, but dead isnt how i would describe it. The biggest games are still to be released.

If you expeect it to be a PS4/XB1 it will have always seemed 'dead', but if you take it for what it is, the Wii U is just hitting it's prime.

Eh, with consoles, I think that if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't get one. When the timing is right, I just know.

For me, weirdly enough, it was the Fatal Frame announcement. All the other already-mentioned titles will be nice, too.

Plus, I really want to play old SNES games on VC

I don't get the point of these threads. I hope this doesn't come across as thread shitting, as it's more I don't get the point as opposed to a thread existing.

We know what games exist. We know what games don't exist. We know the price. We know the features. We have an idea what's coming. These are all things we can help with.

However, only you know how much time you have to play. You know what that money means to you. You know what genres you like. You know how much you value the IPs that exist. These are things we can't generally help you with. You like platformers? Okay, puzzly ones? Twitch ones? Indie? Metroidvanias? It's just too much to process for randoms.

It's up to you. I personally don't think the Wii U is worth it. Don't have the time, don't like certain decisions Nintendo has made, etc etc. But this is a personal matter that I don't think can be solved asking random, biased (on both sides) nerds that have no idea who you are.

1. games r gud

2.

But yeah if you're not a fan of the particular Nintendo style & genres it'll probably be a waste of money for you. If it looks like so far all you're interested in is Mario, Zelda, and DK, it's really up to you to decide if it's worth it just for those. At the very least you'll have a big backlog of other games if you ever want to try one of the games you have less interest in

I feel like this has been said since before MK8. And then before Smash. And now before what...Zelda?

I think it comes down to people being unsure about putting the money in and wanting some reassurance or some solid dissuading.

And there's a new "Nintendo Direct" for this game focusing on the mecha and online component tomorrow. Gonna be awesome.

Anyway, buy a Wii U if you like good games. It's that simple.

Anyway, buy an Xbox One if you like good games. It's that simple.

Anyway, buy a PS4 if you like good games. It's that simple.

Anyway, buy a 3DS if you like good games. It's that simple.

Anyway, buy a PSV if you like good games. It's that simple.

Anyway, buy a PC if you like good games. It's that simple.

See why it isn't that simple?
yea...getting harder to come by...
Definitely. I love seeing PC boxes though. Looks so nice to have that physical collection!

It's still that simple if you have the disposable income :)

Drop the persecution complex.

Strong lineup of exclusive games, if they are of the type that interest you. It doesn't have that big Nintendo game that is poised to be an all-time classic (yet) in the vein of Mario Galaxy or Metroid Prime, but there's a solid lineup of very good-to-great games accumulated at this point.

Very, very well said.

100% Wii backwards compatibility is pretty mind boggling if you skipped that console.

In all honesty if you waited this long for a Wii U, I'm sure you could wait until the next price cut, or the next sweet bundle.

I think it comes down to people being unsure about putting the money in and wanting some reassurance or some solid dissuading.

I definitely understand that feeling. It feels good knowing that others support you in your decision. But this is impossible. It's a no-win situation because you'll have 10 people saying "don't do it" and 10 people saying "do it".

The OP's mind is probably 90% made up by the time he/she created the thread. If everyone said one thing he/she'd probably change his/her mind, but everyone knew that wasn't going to be the case, so...yeah. Just don't see what it accomplishes. For the OP, I mean. I don't want this to be thread shitting, as anyone can create whatever thread they want.

/walkin' on eggshells

I know that in some cases with "weirdo" systems like the Vita or Wii U, these threads may be useful because of the lack of information in the general public about the system. So a thread like this may let the OP know about some hidden gem of a game, or some neat feature that cements their purchase decision.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Putting that stupid "No NSA Associations" photo aside, the reason why you should get a Wii U is because it has a lot of great first-party published games you can't get anywhere else.

My metric for getting a new console is always this: Are there five games I want to play on it? You listed four, in addition to VC, and judging by the games you're interested in I'm pretty sure you'd like DKCTF and Captain Toad too. So I'd say go for it.

Also, I would say Mario Kart 8 is worth trying even if you haven't been huge on the series in the past - it's easily one of the best in the series and I think it's a prime example of how Nintendo is still at the top of their game.

I just sold mine. 3D World was my favorite game this gen until Bloodborne hit though. The Zelda delay kinda just killed all interest I had in owning one. I really hope Retro doesn't unveil a new Prime at E3, that would complicate things for me.

But if you don't have interest in SSB, MK, etc. I can't really see a point in dropping the cash for a couple games.

Right, but most people probably don't, so usually people like some more detailed reasons as why to buy a system :P

God help me I own everything but the X1. My wallet bleeds.

I have every system. If you have a PS4 and more importantly a PC you don't need an Xbox One imo. Maybe in the future if there's exclusives you want absolutely but that's it.

For me it's very easy to purchase the system I want. I list the games I want on each system (even multi platform) and buy the system which offers the more games I want (of course already available games have to weight a little more in the balance than upcoming games... delays).

So after Nintendo systems (their exclusives are crushing the concurrence for me) I usually go for Sony then Microsoft. The mistake I made this gen was to buy every system at launch but I know I'll always have every system during the gen so... I keep them even if not playing at all for now.

I agree with you detailed reasons may vary from one to another but games (I guess since we're playing video games) are still the main criteria.

You should be able to beat the $285 price you mentioned in OP, so that should make the decision to purchase one a little easier. The Nintendo refurbished units that others have mentioned have frequently been reported as coming new.

The main draw of course is the First Party Nintendo games and they are absolutely amazing, IMO.

Pikmin 3 is a great strategy game and for my tastes easily the best in the series. I feel it compromised the time mechanic and found a perfect balance from the first 2.

Wind Waker HD is the definitive version of a classic Zelda title. Nuff said!

Hyrule Warriors is a must play for any serious Zelda fan, IMO. It's a fun game with LOADS of content and fanservice. It has a lot of playable characters.

Super Mario 3D World is another great entry into the 3D Mario series. While a little on the easy side for somes tastes I feel there is enough challenge trying to find the coins, in each level. If your up for a challenge Chamions Road is brutal!

Zombi U is one of my favorite Survival Horror games ever. I realize some will obviously disagree for various reasons but this game oozes atmosphere. It's a true Survival Horror game that requires you to plan your attack and punishes you if you attempt to just run and gun your way through the levels. A must play for any Survival Horror fan, IMO!

Lego City Undercover is the best Lego game I've played. Typically I'm not a big fan of Lego games but the ones I played do not come close to comparing to LCU. It's open world with tons of charm and plenty of optional content to keep you busy. The load times are horrible but they are infrequent and don't detract much from the overall experience, IMO.

Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is a challenging and rewarding experience. Some believe it to be among the best 2D Platformers. Definitely a title all Wii U owners should at least look into and all DK fans should own.

Rayman Legends on the Wii U is the best version. Top notch 2D Platformer. Definitely a game Platformer fans should play.

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is a unique game that I found to be tons of fun. It's a gorgeous game with tons of charm. Worth a look if you play through Super Mario 3D world and like the Toad levels.

This obviously doesn't include some of the biggest titles, which OP mentioned he wasn't very interested in such as Smash, MK8, Bayo, and W101. I would definitely advise OP to spend some time looking at these or if possible try them at a friends or rent them to give them a shot. I also didn't mention some other First Party titles that may be of interest to some such as Game and Wario, Wii Sports Club, Wii Fit U, etc...

There are also some other 3rd Party titles that are relatively cheap now. If OP hasn't played these on other platforms some may offer some bonus content or be preferable because of Off TV play. Tekken Tag 2, Deus Ex, Mass Effect 3, Batman Arkham games, Amazing Spiderman (2 games), etc...

The eShop also contains some great games that may, or may not, be available on other platforms.

Last, I would mention that the broswer is amazing! I typed this on the Wii U and frequently browse Gaf, and other sites, despite owning an iPad, iPhone 6, multiple Lap Tops, etc... Since I keep the gamepad n the charger next to my couch its convenient to grab it and use it.
