Senate Investigation: Russia Did Interfere with Election

#1
Republicans and Democrats reach across the aisle to announce the obvious: that Russia attempted and did interfere with the election. It remains to be seen what role Trump played in this (as a puppet, tool, or comrade). The House investigation was BS and everyone knew it.

“The Russian effort was extensive, sophisticated, and ordered by President Putin himself for the purpose of helping Donald Trump and hurting Hillary Clinton.”

The average American had bought the lies sold by Russia thru targeted Facebook ads, complex social media farms, and strategic help to the Trump administration. I believe we all know people who were given these pills and will ever deny being affected by them. Some, I'm sure, are on this board itself.

Well, people did get into the “Hillary is for the banks and the rich” narrative that even other Democrat candidates themselves backed, so I’m not sure how much Russia’s at fault for them losing the election.

With that said, that’s a huuuge no no no for this country to allow ever again.

Yes they did interfere. So now you all can sleep better at night knowing its not really Hillarys fault that lost the election, it's those damn Russians who cheated her out of a victory.
Finally, I can sleep now. I look forward to quoting you.

Also, looking forward to your next reply when we find out Trump had a hand in it. What's going to be your excuse then?

I always wonder how there are people who think that other countries don't actively interfere with EVERYTHING lol. Seriously, all countries do this. It is not news or interesting. Look up the USA's history if you think this Russia stuff is bad is bad. Prepare to be blown away.

Our generation has been saying the USA have meddled with others' elections all our lives we know this. But, certain demographics have been denying any involvement of Russia and this past election. It started with 'Oh, there's no way! Lefties are delusional', to 'Of course they meddled!'. We're only months away from 'How could Trump NOT take help from Russia, I know I would!'.

sure but not doing something doesn't solve the issue. And in this day and age funding cybersecurity needs to be a top priority something that the government needs to do. I would assume both sides should agree on no matter what your stance is on the Russian meddling issue.

2006 Audio Emerges of Hillary Clinton Proposing Rigging Palestine Election
Unearthed tape: 'We should have made sure that we did something to determine who was going to win'
By Ken Kurson • 10/28/16 1:00pm

On September 5, 2006, Eli Chomsky was an editor and staff writer for the Jewish Press, and Hillary Clinton was running for a shoo-in re-election as a U.S. senator. Her trip making the rounds of editorial boards brought her to Brooklyn to meet the editorial board of the Jewish Press.
The tape was never released and has only been heard by the small handful of Jewish Press staffers in the room. According to Chomsky, his old-school audio cassette is the only existent copy and no one has heard it since 2006, until today when he played it for the Observer.

So glad the USA has higher standards than those evil russians

Nice quoting a conservative news site, and one owned by Jared Kushner. The article itself says there was no evidence. Wow.

And plus, who cares if it happens to us? /s.

Oh i'm so sorry, let me get ya a lefty talking about it so you can better understand it
Sweet! I love that you're finally watching some Young Turks; funny they also provided no evidence. But hey, if Hillary stopped Hamas from getting political power in Palestine, I guess she's the devil. I better not hear you be hypocritical later, (when the Trump admin inevitably sticks their hand in an external election).

Also, nice attempt in trying to derail the thread. This thread is about how the Senate now unequivocally believes the Russian's interfered with the most recent election in the US. It isn't about your butt hurt feelings.

I’m not convinced social media ads amounted to much when it comes to people placing their votes. I still think the government should study all the details and plug any holes they can for future elections.

The best part is that the same people bitching and moaning over this want to further empower the apparatus that does this shit to other people (CIA, NSA, etc.). Those same people adamantly opposed those structures under Bush but are now insisting that they "keep us safe".

This whole thing smacks of a 1984-esque constant state of war designed to make people want to give up their privacy to prevent dem damn dirty Ruskies from buying a few thousand dollars of ads on a dying platform and rig the election. Especially after we learned that the CIA has tools specifically designed to disguise intrusions as having a foreign origin.

People like you are at best confused. Y'all need to decide. Trump is either senile and incompetent. Or he's a sinister evil Mastermind. Right now the Left wants both to be true and it simply can't be both. So choose one and run with it but I'm tired of people wanting both. I personally think you and others like you are completely delusional that you believe Trump was able to collude with Russia and not tweet about it or be caught bragging about it. So when it comes out he was simply a useful idiot in all this will YOU accept that? I suspect not. The truth is no matter who does the investigation and what they find if it favors Trump it'll never be believed by the Democrats. So you look like a hypocrite looking down on others when you yourself probably wouldn't do what you're asking if the table was flipped.

The most shocking thing about this whole scandal is that "interfering" is merely displaying certain articles on people's Facebook feeds. That's it. Just showing you fake news articles. You would think the "interfering" would be tampering with votes or paying candidates.

You could show me fake news articles all day long, and it would not change my position of any candidate.

And what is the point?
Irrespective of how hard people try to pretend otherwise, the point is to suggest Trump didn't win fair and square. The point is to delegitimize Pres. Trump's victory and push a narrative that a Russian puppet has been running the US gov't for more than a year and has access to virtually all of its secrets.

As far as the Democratic party goes specifically, their goal is to deflect from the fact that their primary voters made a mistake and most eligible voters didn't support the person that they thought gave them the best chance to win.

I find the 'argument from hypocrisy' unconvincing. It's consistent to be upset both when the US interferes in other elections (see: any history of the CIA) and also be upset when the US itself is a target of election interference. I have no doubt that there are some individuals out there who have some wacky rationale as to why the US's interference misadventures are earnest and Russia is the only ever the bad guys, but those people do not seem to be in the thread - so the attempt to associate anyone who supports the investigation with them seems dishonest.

A useful idiot committing a crime is still a criminal. So, yeah, I will take that. Thanks for the questions. I also appreciate you calling Trump 'a useful idiot'.

...seriously? It’s spelled out in the thread title and article.

The point is that a foreign nation interfered in our democratic process in a multitude of ways in an effort to undermine one candidate and in favor of another. To sow doubt in our democracy and elections and create divisions among our voters and populace.

I don’t believe you’re that obtuse, so maybe you just don’t care? I guess that wouldn’t surprise me too much at this point. The responses to news like this over the past year or so has gone from “lol no they didn’t” to “yeah but the US does this all the time” to “ok but there’s still no proof Trump or his people were involved” to “yeah but I definitely wasn’t influenced”...

Lots of mental gymnastics to trivialize something that now has bipartisan consent as being noteworthy.

But what exactly is illegal about Russia's interference in the US election?

Whenever I go into a discussion about this topic this is where no one can give me a straight answer. I even searched online for what exact laws did these Russians trolls break by buying political ads and posting fake news on Facebook, and all I could find is a vague reference to some obscure "political interference" law. Is simply a foreigner posting fake news breaking the law? If that's the case I'm sure there are millions of potential people breaking that law right now at this moment.

Oooh! I forgot to list this one in my post, thanks for the reminder.

“Yeah but it’s not technically illegal”

What does its legality have to do with anything?

Also, is it legal to break into DNC servers and email accounts and release the contents? What about going after state voter rolls?

That's cheap as "did something" is a vague statuement, regardless, why is it even relevant? Do you imply Russia messing against H. is OK, since she was OK pushing for some Palestinian candidate to win?
To my knowledge even Russians didn't expect T. to win and went to second phase, crippling H.s credibility, to weaken her as a president.

The relevance is that it is routine for America to directly interfere with foreign elections in service of its geopolitical goals. This has included Russia, historically. In this case they were acting in the same way America would - they wanted Trump or a weak Hillary because a strong Hillary invades their allies or starts shooting down their jets, so they took steps to assure one of those outcomes.

None of it is okay, but you can't get upset about other countries adopting the same behaviour you yourself are guilty of.

This is where I stand too. I don’t think Facebook ads that said “Hillary is the devil!” made people think “wow, I didn’t know that. Better change my vote to Trump!”.

If I do remember correctly the Russians did try to access voting machines and records, but were not successful in altering things. That’s the stuff we should be paying attention to and improving security for.

Who cares if Trump let the Russians help him, that just makes him a smart business man. Hillary would never be smart enough to play Putin like a fiddle the way Trump did. Trump is a cutthroat, the type of aggressive president we need.

#38
They interfere in every election. They were trying to get Bernie to win the Dem primary too. All they want to do is cause chaos. I still see no evidence that Trump made the Russians interfere. The Russians did it all on their own like they always do.

That's because de-facto there are lesser countries that matter less.

None of it is okay, but you can't get upset about other countries adopting the same behaviour you yourself are guilty of.
There is something about good intentions in it, South vs North Korea, Eastern vs Western Germany.

Neogaf is such a former shell of what it used to be, it kills me. I've been posting or lurking on this forum since 2007, and it's basically become the_donald lite. The fact that this report has come out and the majority of users continue to pettifog or engage in whattaboutism is hilarious and saddening. It's a shame the Neogaf had to shatter, because TheOtherForum needs some right-wing perspective and this forum desperately needs a smack in the head.

There's plenty of left wing and centrist perspective here. Not sure how this is some right wing haven just because the field is more level than ever...

Eh, I definitely think it's gone too far right. People bend over backwards to handwave anything Trump does and frequently whine about how "the leftists" are ruining the world. I think the balance was better around the time right after the GAF/ERA split.

Bit off-topic, though.
